Junc special teams count luck counts and teams sometimes are better at the end of the season than at the begining of the season. The Jets beat the Raiders in the Playoffs, you are the one speculating that they would have lost in Oakland because it fits your argument that Namath sucked even though you never saw him play.
We beat them in an extremely close game, we needed a fumble deep in our territory to hold on. I don't think it's crazy to think Oak wouild have beaten us in Oak if the game was there like it should have been.
No it's not crazy Junc, it's just pure speculation on your part. Teams, particularly good teams split all the time on each others turf. The Jets this year lost to the Pats at home and won on the road. It happens all the time, teams get better and the fact is that year, the Jets, Oakland and KC were very good teams and very close in talent.
Did you know we never beat oak on the road in thsoe years? Our last win at oakland(until 2001 but of course they were LA from '82-'94) was in 1962 when we were the Titans. How could we have expected to win there when we never did in those days?
I'm still trying to figure out how he was even a choice. he's not even the best WR we have ever had, he's not even the 2nd best WR we have ever had and may not be the 3rd best.
Well I was 25 when JWN came to us so I saw him play lots & lots of games since as I was a season tix holder & there is NOBODY repeat NOBODY that had the talents that he had. That drive in NYJ/Oak PO game that got us the lead in a cold/wind whippped Shea still sticks with me as being one of the best drives I have ever seen. To this day I contend that if the NYJ/Oak game was a NFL game & not a AFL game it would probably go down as one the greatest games ever played. Polls of this type show the true age gap that exists on this board. The youngies never have seen Namath/Boozer/Snell/Maynard but having seen Curtis/WC/MG/JK would naturally graviate towards players that they have seen vs players they have not seen.
Yeah, really. I put all these fellows ahead of him: Don Maynard Al Toon George Sauer Wesley Walker Keyshawn Johnson Art Powell Laveranues Coles
This is completely incorrect. The Raiders absolutely did not have a conflict. The AFL title game location was not based on record. It was based on a rotation. The Eastern Division titlist hosted the game in even numbered years and the Western Division winner hosted the game in odd numbered years. In 1969, this did not come into play due to the 4-team playoff whereby the two final teams came from the same division (Chiefs and Raiders). 1960: Eastern 1961: Western 1962: Eastern 1963: Western 1964: Eastern 1965: Western 1966: Eastern 1967: Western 1968: Eastern 1969: -
Kyle Clifton Played 205 games, way more than anyone else on the list and he never got half the props. Better than any LB we have today. He could play in any system. He was my favorite jets players from 1984 - 1996. I also really liked Victor Green who got the shaft.
What's funny here is that Statistically both players were above avg. yet they were 2 totally different characters off the field. Joe was the Hang out boy and C-Mart was the out of trouble type. C-Mart was a better than avg. runner but was not a spectacular back Joe was a gun slinger with a cannon and threw quite a few picks. Pretty intriguing imo.
Thanks for the info, i always remembered reading they had a conflict. Interesting point though is that only in 1966 and 1968 did the team w/ the lesser record host the Championship Game.
I voted for Namath because of what he did for the team and the NFL. My second choice would have been Klecko. Anybody who makes all pro at 3 different positions must be great.
What other Jets QB every lead the league (both Leagues) in passing yards? Joe did it in consecutive seasons. To give you a little perspective in 68 the Jets were second in total points with 419 that's NFL and AFL, in 02 Chad's best season 16 games vs 14 we were 15th with 359 (In fairness to Chad he didn't play in all 16 games but he still had more attempts than Namath had in 68). In 68 in 12 games Namath while completing only 49.2% of his passes had a higher YPA at 8.3 than Pennington did in 02 completing over 69% of his passes and Namath still had more total yards on less total passes. People mistake completion % for efficiency all the time. The reality is Chad in his best year had to complete almost 2 passes for every one pass Namath completed to move the team the same distance down the field. The other side of that is Namath threw a lot of deep passes and didn't complete a large % so more passes were intercepted. Of course many of those INT's were down the field and since we scored more points than we did in 02 and also let up a lot less points, you might conclude that we weren't being hurt by INT's in the deep passing game as much as we are being hurt by stalled drives, punts and turnovers by utilizing a short passing game on O. When you have a quick strike O that score points, it also allows your D to take more risk with pressure because the O will cover the mistakes. Our D right now can't be aggresive because a quick strike by the opposition can't be erased by our O. The other fact that people miss is when you utilize a short accurate passing game and your QB get's intercepted, a much higher % of a less productive pass that misses it's target is being intercepted. That's exactly why we stink right now.
Chad started 12 games Joe 14, both attempted about the same # of passes and Chad threw 7 more TDs and 11 less INTs. In Joe's career only ONCE did he throw for more than the 22 TDs Chad threw in 2002 and joe's 26TDs that year were accompanied by 28 INTs.
