With all the chatter about surrounding Sam with some better talent, a better defense will help just as much.

Currently the Jets rank 26th in total defense. That kinda sucks.

I just don't believe that getting that mythical "edge rusher" is gonna fix everything.

Is it scheme or a lack of talent that has us ranked so low?

Coaching and talent. Getting a true threat on the edge will make everyone on the defense better though. It will not fix all that ails us but it will help cover up for other deficiencies.

Agree the D only needs a few pieces. Edge rusher and a corner. Would love if buster is gone, hes not very good.

Not sure why Nickerson hasn't been playing the slot for 100% of the snaps in recent games.

    Is he still nicked up?

They would have a much better defense if they had much better defensive coaches. Bowles and Rodgers are the problems not the talent. When your coaches are morons and can't make a simple adjustment not have a game plan, then you have a problem.

"We didn't prepare for Mayfeild" .... Not only that but we didn't adjust at all. That Game alone along with that quote is enough to get Bowles fired IMO. Never have I seen a complete lack of respect for a QBs skill set than when that change happened before halftime and we did nothing different on defense.

A good edge rusher will make the defense a lot better. Better coaching wouldn't hurt either. That said, we need better weapons for Darnold. We have complementary RB's, #2 and #3 WR's, and an up and coming TE. We need a stud RB or #1WR that can strike fear into opposing DC's.

The amount of time they spent on the field surely has something to do with it, all the 3 and punts the offence put up through the middle of the season, the D defended very well but was blown up by the 4th quarter and were plainly fucked.

There have been some tool jobs, but stupid penalties on BOTH sides of the ball have been killing the Jets all season long. It's a serious problem. Not de-railing even though the subject is defense but it needs to addressed no matter who they draft . . . and if there is a such thing as a benevolent God, not by this staff.

If they can trade down and grab more picks to improve the oline or draft WR, I'd be happy with that, then try to sign a pass rusher like Lawrence. A top notch pass rusher would improve the defense much moreso than any other position, although they will likely need to upgrade corner as well. I'm okay with the rest of the defense and hopefully Nathan Shepard takes a big step next year as well so Williams won't have to do all the work.

  12. Partially scheme & partially lack of a pass rush.

It wont solve all the D’s problems but an edge wil solve quite a few of them. Its not just their specfic productivity but the way they affect blocking schemes.

It's coaching, defensive play calling, and lack of adjustments imo.
Rex coaching this squad would have us top 10, if not top 5. Ditto with Gregg Williams. There is enough talent.

My biggest disappointment in Bowles is how he managed this D, especially the talent in the secondary.
It's embarrassing how conservative they play with a lead (until the lead is gone).

The Jets needs going into offseason:

    OFFENSE:

back up QB ( VET )
    dependable # 2 TE ( blocking )
    all purpose RB
    # 1 WR
    a C
    a G
    a LT

    About 5-6 new starters

    DEFENSE:

    OLB EDGE
    another LB or DE
    # 2 CB to replace Claiborne.

    about 2-3 new starters

That’s what did it for me.

How could you not prepare for Mayfield? He was your 1B if Darnold was taken before 3rd.

You scouted him. You watched his tape and if you knew what he had. It had to be clear you he would surpass Tyrod at some point.

And if that wasn’t bad enough they did the same thing with Barkley. “We prepared for Josh Allen”

    Lol.

The Barkley thing didn't phase me, but only because by that point I had lost all faith in the staff. It was no longer shocking like it was in Cleveland.

I don’t know. Khalil Mack seemed to fix a lot of things in Chicago. I’d imagine he would have done the same for us.
