Im one of the biggest Chad supporters, no doubt, but what happens next week and in Miami will tell the tale of his future. With that, im going to make a statement that im sure i'll get reamed out for but here goes: When the Jets pick on draft day, Troy Smith will more then likely be there, many experts arent picking him untill rd. 2...Do the Jets boldly pick Troy Smith?? Would he be a good/bad fit? Is he the right direction? ok, let the yelling at me begin
What is wrong with giving Clemens a chance. You don't even know what you have with him. Second, Smith is too short.
i wouldn't say i'm yelling at you, but i disagree with the idea... we took a qb in the 2nd round last year, (clemens) there is no justifiable way you can take another qb with one of our top picks next year. even so, troy smith wouldnt' step in and start, and i think our team has more immediate needs to be filled than a qb to bring along for the future.
I think Chad's future has been told all season, he can't win a big game. They'll let him finish the season but I say we only win one game and that's Oakland. I don't think we need another Rookie QB in Troy Smith. I say they work with Clemens or bring in an experienced veteran QB. Hard to say, I mean the rest of the team looks solid with the exception of the QB.
It all depends on how Mangini feels about Clemens, which noone really knows at this point. Judging by the fact that he doesn't appear to be a threat to Pennys job right now, tells me that maybe he isn't progressing as we all hoped and expected. I would doubt at this point that we would look at QB in the first round but you never know. We are gonna need a QB of the future and if Clemens is not that guy, someone has to be. I'll say though if Mangini doesn't feel like Clemens can be the man, I think Shaub would be a more likely target than bringing in a rookie QB..
im not gonna lie if brian brohm is sitting there in the 20's. i would be tempted in taking that big 6'5 beast with a cannon.
I could see that. But who backs up Clemens? Brad Smith? The rumor is McNabb may not be in Philly next year..... any chance......
What does Chad think his problems are? The inner workings of Chad meshing well with the team may never be available to us. But, no matter what the causes we are still able to see the results. The recent performances by Chad compares to that of Drew Bledsoe. Now sitting on the sidelines for the Cowboys. Don't get me wrong. I think Chad could be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. But, he has to mesh well with the team to achieve that ranking. And, the on again off again performance isn't going to do it for the Jets. So, from a point of view, which does not include the inner workings of the team, I'd have to opine that Chad would best be traded. The problems with his accuracy seem to be related to the amount of stress he is under. Some QB's thrive off that pressure. Chad seems to be the opposite. While, the Jets winning games will create pressure for a quarterback no matter what. Normally a bunch of four yard or less passes means that pass pressure is too much or that coverage is too good. With Chad it seems that he's more secure passing there. Meaning he doesn't have confidence in his arm, the routes, or the receivers. Which may or may not be a real problem for him. The result is that because of high expectations and bad performances Chad looks like he's throwing the game. Which of course irritates us fans. So, the choices for the Jets regarding Chad becomes: Keep Him: In which case the problem of meshing with confidence would remain until addressed adequately. If it is possible at all. And, although Chad is a nice guy he is not a mentor of the position for a possible replacement. Trade Him: Then we'd need a starting quarterback of equal or better performance. Which may be harder to accomplish then thought. Getting someone like Troy Smith would require a starting QB for the transition. Make Him a Backup: He'd be a very good backup for the Jets. But, he'd have to accept the position and pay. Two things I don't think he should have to accept with his possible abilities. For me the choice would drop to keep him or trade him. He should be given a chance to start wherever he plays. And, if it's not for the Jets it should be with another team. Also, I'd prefer to keep him if he could be a lifter during down times. But, he only seems to play up while the rest of the team is doing well. When the team is down he acts like he's trapped and can't achieve. If I had any confidence that this would resolve somehow I'd keep him. But, I am not privy to the inner workings of the team and would have to base my opinion on what I've seen. Which brings us to trading him. It would be nice to get a good draft choice for him. It would be nice to give him the freedom to accept the offer he sees best. In other words, we shouldn't just dump him. After trading him we'd have a problem.... None of our backup quarterbacks have proven themselves capable of starting. (Note on trying to use Brad Smith as a quarterback: His arm will probably never be good enough for an offense that depends on the pass by design. see Atlanta.) Now, if this problem continues we'd need to find a starter even if we got a first round quarterback like Troy Smith. So, if we get rid of Chad we'll probably also need to get rid of another quarterback. So, we'll end up with two veteran starters and one "future qb"; or, two "future qb's" and one starter. ..... Since, we are still in the hunt for a possible playoff position (Although the odds are against it.). We'll probably have to wait until Chad loses another for the staff to try finding out if any of our backups are good enough to keep next year. And, if Chad somehow finds us in the playoffs.. we'll probably end up keeping him for next year. In which case we'll probably be having this same discussion around December.
Chad will never be the same again. If we do lose another 2 games they should start clemens. If thats the case Next season the jets will need a VET QB.
 He would be my pick of the QBs too. Having said that I did become a little bit of a fan of Quinn , just because of his toughness alone. He is one tough competitor
Take a good look at Mangini's face on the sidelines and you can tell he's not going with this Chinese Fire Drill next year. He ran TC with the job being wide open... anybody's job... and that's the way it'll be next August too. We're not going to draft a QB next year, we just drafted one this year who we haven't even tried yet. We'll build on the other positions and give Clemens a real good opportunity, but make no mistake, the job will be Clemens' to lose, not Pennington's. I can't take it anymore. Without a deep threat you've got immense pressure. And pressure is the one thing that gets Penny going into the Chinese Fire Drill. Can't have it.... sorry.
Chads has always been this way, since day 1. If he gets perfect protection he picks the other team apart. Any type of pressure and he can't handle it, so I would tend to agree. To win the Super Bowl, you will always have to go through teams with great D-lines, and if Chad always shrinks when his O-Line is not PERFECT in pass protecting, then where are we?
All I know is that Mangini had better not just hand the job to Clemens like Mularkey did JP Losman and kicked Bledsoe to the curb. At least let Kellen fight for the job, like he did this past offseason and beat out Chad outright, if he's here. But the absolute worst thing would be just to hand it to him.
your not stupid. cuz i dont consider myself so and the same thing crossed my mind. but maybe both of us are. haha.......theres no way OAK/CLE screw the pooch on this one and pass on smith. no way he goes that far. its the same case as vince young. smith grew up in Cleveland, he will be winning a nat'l championship barring a huge upset. Troy Smith has drew brees written all over him. Doing what he did in the michigan game was amazing. My only hope would be that he somehow found his way on the board come our pick. we wouldnt pick him being that we drafted clemens last yr. but I would probably pull the trigger on him. no matter what as long as chad doesnt play his 2nd full season ever. oh wait......he still has to get through these next 3 to pull that off.
i dont think that will happen cuz they'll probably give clemens a shot before they draft troy smith. It just wouldn't be smart to draft two qbs in the second round two years in a row. If anything, they'll get someone to help out whichever qb is starting. They might get a running back. Dont put it past them. I dont think they would mind get a marshawn lynch, michael hart, steve slaton, someone who might be able to carry the load. But then again, it's tough to say whether the problem is the backs themselves or the lack of commitment to the running game. right now i think our biggest draft needs are as follows (plz dont kill me i know its a long way till the draft but this is how is see it now) 1. RE Kimo is awful and is becoming a huge liability. In the bills game they just kept running to his side and there were huge holes (maybe draft a lamaar woodley?) 2. Second CB again, another liability on this defense. This position has been in huge disarray. Every game it seems someone else is starting. 3. Running back. Im sure they wouldn't mind getting a sure running back who can carry most of the load.
