Because he's making a lot more then the best player at that position and not by a little either. Mosley ILB rankings is probably 4th with Luke and Wagner at a tier well ahead of Mosley.

I don't mind the contract because we have a QB under the rookie scale and a defense that needs more leadership in the front 7.

Nothing wrong with being overpaid. That's the nature of the game.

Bell was a top 3 RB, not sure if he is anymore. Mosley is arguably a top 3 ILB, but we're paying him Von Miller money. Which is a ridiculous amount more than the second-highest ILB, Luke Kuechly, is getting. For someone who isn't a pass rusher, that contract is insane.

We just made Bell the 2nd highest paid RB in the league at 27 years old and coming off a year out of football. At a position where guys are known to decline quickly and teams get Pro Bowlers with nowhere near that level of investment.

Would we need Bell if we took Kamara in the 2017 draft? Do we even entertain the thought of signing Long if we took Elflein in that same draft instead of trading down with the Vikings, who took him?

Mosley has made 17.5 million over 5 years before this contract. Kuechly has made 53.34 million in 7 seasons. Wagner has made 35.8 in 7 seasons. You can't look at today's contract without looking at total earnings when the cap goes up every year. The simple fact that the cap goes up brings players FA value up if there's team need.

You don't need to look at total earnings. Mosley got 51 guaranteed and Deion Jones got 57 total. You telling me, Mosley ain't overpaid?

Is kuechly the best ILB in the NFL? of course but you also have to look at how contracts work. he signed his deal in 2015 so 4 years ago. contracts always go up every year for any position. so anyone who is top 5 or even top 10 at their position in the NFL will become the "new highest paid player at that position". that's how it works. Even if we say he isn't top 3 which is arguable, he's at worst top 5. Luke also signed an extension and chose not to hit the FA market in which he could have likely made even more when the bidding wars started. The main point is "overpaid" is for players making a lot who underperform. mosely has earned his money so I don't see how he can be overpaid. He's still at worst a top 5 player at his position, young and in the prime of his career, and in 5 years is a 4 time pro bowler and 4 time 2nd team all pro. Not to mention we had to offer enough to lure him away from balt. If barr didn't bolt on us, he would have been overpaid based on his resume. This article is good and the fact people here are clamoring that 3 jets shuold be on it, is just proof of how poorly this fanbase views this team and how unreasonably hard we are on it at times. The only one on the team we could remotely say is overpaid is trumaine and that was 1 down and injury plagued year. if he bounces back this year then it's irrelevant, if not then we can start with the overpaid talk.

that's what fans always forget. they don't understand the NFL is an economy. Player talent is a commodity, teams have budgets. For a real life scenario (and mind you there are laws against this) but say in a national emergency the local supermarket ups their prices of water from 1 dollar a bottle to 5. They do it because the supply is limited and demand is high. You need the water badly so you pay the 5 dollars a bottle. Did you overpay? sure compared to what it's worth normally but in the situation the market dictates the price. As long as the water quenches your thirst so you don't die, you can't say you overpaid. It's better then dying over 4 dollars and principle.

Kuechly and Wagner are 1a and 1b. That is no debate. Mosley is probably 4 in terms of best ILBs and there are a lot of young dawgs coming to take his spot. Mosley didn't just become the highest paid player at that position, he destroyed the previous contract. No doubt, Mosley earned his money, but that's crazy money for an ILB. 4 seasons later after the Luke extension doesn't equate to the amount of cash we gave him. He was overpaid given his position and talent, but his impact will be huge for the Jets.

Lets see what Bobby Wagner gets.

guaranteed it would take more money to get wagner or kuechly away from their teams then we paid mosley. the thing is whether they want to or if another team is willing. realistically I think both will stay where they are for a similar deal that mosley got. remember it's always harder to lure a player away from a team they like. it's all supply and demand.

At the end of the day, it took MORE money, way more then the market value. Ravens did not offer the amount of money we offered him, we overpaid for his services.

Isn't this what drugs companies do all the time, milk the market for the last cent?

I'm telling you the term "over paid" suggests we could have gotten him for less money. Deion Jones wasn't an FA he renegotiated an existing deal. Apples and Oranges. He got what we paid him. I don't believe their were handguns present at the negotiations.

I don't agree with the assessment that being overpaying means you had an option to get him for less money. Ravens or a winning franchise that needed an ILB could have gotten him for less money, Jets had to OVERPAY (well over the valued market price) in order to get him signed here. The previous high for an inside linebacker was a $12.3 million average per year that Luke Kuechly got from the Panthers. Mosley’s $17 million per year. 14M, 15M per year more than likely would be fair market value in today's age for a FA linebacker. 17M is an overpay for the players services. However, FAs always get overpaid.

Deion Jones, arguably a better ILB while he wasn't a FA, still is getting no where near the #s Mosley is getting. I am looking forward to seeing what Wagner gets.

not really. they can't price gouge in an emergency. there are laws in place. Outside of that competition and generic versions keeps their pricing in check and gives better options. Sadly there is noting in place to stop hospitals from billing your insurance 15 bucks for 1 aspirin though so yeah it kind of happens but again supply and demand. it's basic economics. People just tend to refuse to understand that and see why players are paid as they are. For a real life example i'm sure everyone here sees people at their job that they probably consider underpaid and/or overpaid. and the overpaid ones got there because of circumstances and need. the NFL is no different then any other company

market value is what it is. the fact we paid it means that was his market value. Not sure why people don't understand that. the market value is in simple terms whatever the market is wiling to pay. the NFL teams or GMs are the market. When they offer a contract to a player, that becomes that players market value. It's the players value in the open market. By definition once can not "pay over market value" in free agency. They set the market value.

I can't guarantee it, but I bet Trumaine Johnson has a solid 2019 season.

The market value for ILB was not 17M per year. We had to go OVER that value to get Mosley here. For an ILB that cannot rush the passer and isn't an elite cover guy ... 17M a year is well above the market value. However, we overpaid for the culture change. No one else offered anything close to what we offered, that is why it is an overpay. The Ravens gave up because it was too much. Regardless, I bet you Wagner still doesn't get 17M per year, he will get right around the true market value which will be 12-15M per year, perhaps might need to go to 16. That is because of Mosley's contract and how it will impact the market going forward.

Your definition of market value clearly doesn't represent anyone else's definition.

    per dictionary.com

    market value
    [ˈmärkət ˌvalyo͞o]
    NOUN
    market values (plural noun)
    1. the amount for which something can be sold on a given market.Often contrasted with book value.

the player is selling their services, whatever is paid to him becomes market value. The market value is whatever teams are willing to pay. nobody is going to pay for example avery williamson 17 mil a year. we paid him 8.5mil that was his market value. Market value =/= if fans think a player is "worth it" or not. overpaid =/= paid over market value either.

I've had this argument so many times. Someone will tell me that so and so isnt better than another player and you have to remind them that the pay scale goes up every year and that the bigger contract is just a measure of hitting FA at the right time. Five players at CB being FAs cuts the contract offers down. One CB on the market is like printing money for an agent

Market value in the NFL is highly skewed by the different cap space that each team carries. The reality is there is no market value in the true sense that everyone is competing on an even playing field. The Jets happen to suck. We have a low payroll because our payroll is made of mostly low paid players. The Ravens suck less than we do. They have less cap space.

The Ravens, like the Jets have a rookie QB on a rookie contract. Unlike the Jets the Ravens have a dead cap hit on Flacco for 16 million which will be off the books in 2020. It will be interesting to see who the Ravens over pay for next year.

I have used the term fair market value but that's not really the same as comparing what all teams would be willing to spend on X free agent. All teams go into FA with different amounts of money to spend and different needs.

If you want to make the argument that Mac is an idiot for paying those kind of dollars for what's likely to be CJ Mosley's production, that's a reasonable argument. But it comes with a caveat. We have a cap to spend to and to the NY Jets in the current FA market spending big on the guys we spent on may make sense. To be determined...

I think the overpaid and underpaid arguments aren't really germane because there isn't a static market. Every team has different amounts to spend and different needs. It's a moving target.

I agree we paid a ton for Mosley likely production. I'm not sure if it's worth it or not. That doesn't mean we over paid.

Boby Wagner would be a good measuring stick but I doubt he's going to make it to FA like Mosley did. Wagner may well renegiotate this year? If that happens he probably will get something now for a lower number as an FA.
