Can't believe so many people liked this comment. It makes literally no sense. If he is MEDICALLY cleared you play him. What is so hard about this? I agree with others, and mean no offense when I say that this comment is just ridiculous. So because he hasn't thrown a football in a month, you dont play him again so he then hasn't thrown a football in five weeks, six weeks? When will be long enough for you? I dont want to hear about practices either before you try, because first off he has returned to practice and second, nothing replicates game action, whether meaningless or not. You are worried about his confidence and development, yet let's not play him to continue to what, develop him on the sidelines? Come on.
Personally, my problem with playing him so soon is that I don't trust the Jets doctors when they say he's "medically cleared", and I don't trust Sam to know what's best for himself - he's a pro athlete and he wants to play no matter what. The Jets need to turn this season around, even if they don't win, they need to look like something more than an arena football team, and so I wouldn't put it past them to rush Darnold back.
It's not up to Sam, literally at all at this point. If he is not cleared then he doesn't play, he can't lie or exaggerate how good he is feeling. It's an imaging test... if the spleen is enlarged still than that is that. Can't fake or work around that. If it is not, then he is back to practice and appears to be feeling fine. So what is the issue? And you really think the doctors CAN, let alone WOULD rush him back? No, they can't, its really not "up to them" even. It's literally only hinged on the size of the spleen.
The Jets doctors are highly regarded professionals with successful practices. They are not going to risk their financial futures or reputations to clear Sam. They have zero to gain and everything to lose by doing so. If, and only if his spleen is found to be normal, he will be medically cleared to play.
People keep saying that when his spleen returns to normal Darnold can be cleared to play, but the paper that was linked to earlier points out the flaw in that reasoning: "Ultrasonography may play a role in return-to-play decisions, but the variability in baseline spleen size can limit its utility." They can tell if his spleen is getting smaller from when he was first diagnosed, and they can tell if its size has stabilized, but since he didn't have an ultrasound of his abdomen before the injury, they cannot tell if it has returned to its normal size, since that varies significantly from person to person. That's why the entire point of that paper was that clinical evidence for the patient is of limited utility for athletes playing a contact sport who have mono, and why their recommendations instead were purely statistical (e.g., the risk of splenic injury is very small in general after 28 days, so wait 28 days).
I was going to bring up earlier that the Dr's don't have a baseline to go by. I'm assuming they are making sure Darnold's spleen is within the normal size range, and has stopped shrinking further before clearing him. Today is the 28 th day since he felt I'll, but if his spleen has reduced in size since the last imaging, he will likely be held out another week by the DR's.
Exactly. In fact you can just say, "No human being with a scintilla of professional connection with the Jets ..." instead of Jets doctors.
Is it weird that the Jets don’t have a 3rd QB on the roster this late into the week if They weren’t extremely confident Sam was going to play Sunday?
I asked the same question in another thread. Maybe Fales (he was cut 10 days ago when they signed Vyncint Smith) went back to practice squad and has been with team this week? Not sure it's been reported anywhere.....
They signed Mike White to the PS. Don't know anything about him. Would imagine he will be activated if Darnold isn't good t go this week.
He has only been approved for light cardio, no weight lifting allowed, just begun throwing a football, almost no practice time and people want to put him in a live game? That sounds like a desperation move to save our coaches job without any concern for the long term health of our FQB. Playing him against NE in 2 weeks seems like it might be rushing him. Playing him against the Eagles just seems idiotic. We gain nothing by beating the Eagles why put an unprepared out of shape QB in a situation to possibly get hurt. Let him regain his health, let him get back in shape, let him regain strength and give him practice time to get up to game speed so he can react more quickly in a live game. It is shocking that it is even a consideration that they might play him.
I’m sure they did a 3-D scan involving every layer of the kids body when he was drafted. They probably have a baseline. If not, how do you even know it’s enlarged lol.
How is he unprepared? He’s been taking all of the 1st team reps this week the moment he was cleared for Non-contact. The moment he is cleared for having a normal size spleen he is healthy. It isn’t like It is an on going sickness. He didn’t break a bone. He didn’t snap anything. No ligaments were torn. He got a sickness. The moment he’s cleared he should play. If you’re worried about the OL play then you should want to sit him the entire season because that won’t change.
lots of silly hyperboles in your post but the "we gain nothing by beating the Eagles" is perhaps the worst one
fack, more unwatchable football, and more build in excuses for Gase will be on tap this weekend. This team is cursed.
My news alert says NO Darnold this week Really makes no difference as we have never beaten the Iggles in a regular season game
