I have too much respect for wayne to start call them equivalent, yet i see alot of chrebet in cotchery, an exceptional 2nd string wr who has a knack for 3rd down catches. way to go jerricho.
Cotchery has the possibility of a 800 catch career even with his late start. You can't say that he's going to be better than Chrebet until he passes the test of time, however his upside is tremendous. Let's have this conversation in 2010 if he has played enough in the interim to be gaining on Wayne in the receptions column.
I was mostly focusing on the fact that cotchery is shaping up to be a solid third down reciever with scattered catches along the way very much so like chrebet aka mr. 3rd down
too early to say....but from what Ive seen so far , Id be disappointed if he doesnt end up being better than wayne...no offense to wayne
This is where I think Chrebet was underrated. he had alot more physical tools than most people thought he did. His biggest flaw was he was short- he was NOT small he was short. he was built like a tank and while he didn't have great straight line speed he had alot of quickness and a nice burst. you don't become that successful in the NFl just b/c you outwork people, you need the physical gifts as well and he had alot of physical gifts.
When I meant physical talent, I meant 6'3 225 with sub 4.4 40 kinda talent. I agree with you about his quickness running through routes, but isn't that more attributed to technique than actual physical ability? Chrebet was the man because of his great hands, nimbleness, penchant for finding open spots in coverages, and his toughness and willingness to put his body on the line for the team. I was in no way knocking Chrebet (he happens to be my all-time favorite Jet).
In his first year getting a real opportunity to play, Cotchery is on pace to come pretty close to some of Chrebet's best seasons. I think he's going to turn out to be a much better receiver.
Disagree with the original poster. Cotchery is far better than Chrebet. Faster, better YAC and a much bigger receiving threat in areas than just over the middle of the field. It's just a shame that Cotchery missed some of the best years of his career because Edwards was too much of an asshat to give him meaningful playing time....
i think we gotta give Cotchery more time before we "crown him." Talent wise, Cotch brings more to the table, but Wayne came up big for us many times over a long time . Wayne wasnt handed the monicker Mr. 3rd Down, he earned it. I like Cotch, but i'll wait at least another season before I give him the leg up. The one thing I love about Cotch is that he plays bigger than what he is. You would think hes 6'3 or something
Yeah he spent a whole 2 years as a part time player- damn you Herm! Our best WR in 2004 was mcCareins and he wasn't starting in place of Moss or Chrebet and last year we played most of the year w/ brooks and jerricho did play alot alst year but w/ the poor QB play he didn't get alot of opprtunities.
I didnt see too much of chrebet as im a relatively new jets fan but even i can say that your sum doesn't seem quite right...
Interesting note: Coles and Cotch tied Key and wayne from 1998 for most recs by a Jets receiving duo. Key had 83 and Wayne 75 and right now coles has 87 and Cotch 71 so they should fly by that record. Key and Wayne had 2214 yds and 18 TDs and right now Coles and Cotch have 1923 yds and 11 TDs.
Are you going to seriously expect me to believe that Cotchery should have remained on the sidelines while we had Wayne Chrebet, already past his prime and following severe concussions, playing in his stead? And if you haven't noticed, 2 years in the NFL is a lifetime. The fact that the guy rode the pine for 2 years while a guy like Chrebet still saw meaningful playing time was a disgrace. Then again, Herm in general is an inept coach in my eyes, so I wouldn't have expected anything less....
