I read somewhere JD had $20M in cap....with 10 going to draft picks. That leaves 10 for the year. I thought for a while JD might combine our last 10 with 7 (winters) = 17 and grab Clowney. But if we keep Winters (hope we do) and hire Logan Ryan (don't care if we do), that leaves basically nada in cap.
Yeah. I figure Clowney was out anyway. Honestly not worth the money. But really Ryan isn't either so it's not much different. Also when Trumaine is officially cut that adds 11 million.
Sorry, but I couldn't possibly disagree more. The last time I checked, the idea in the NFL is to win. What do you think the whole idea of the pipe line for players is? One has established veteran players starting, and meanwhile one is grooming young players to replace them. That's what has happened throughout the history of the NFL with good teams. Many of the vets, and I think all of the FAs Douglas has signed with the exception of McGovern were basically signed to one-year deals. If Ryan is signed, he will be signed to a one-year deal. Poole is on a one-year deal. If we were to sign Peters, he would be signed to a one-year deal. It is not a waste of talent imo. For all any of us know, Guidry and Jackson could prove to be never good enough to contribute in the NFL. 4.6 is slow for a CB. Even with his height and ball skills, WRs could run by Jackson all day long. Guidry is short and very raw. It could be a year or two before he's ready to see the field, if then. Just because they aren't starting doesn't mean that they won't be developing. Players do learn watching from on the sidelines, studying film, working with the coaches, practicing, and playing STs. Wilson is a much better player than Hairston. Douglas was desperate for CB help last year. I was hoping that Hairston could develop, but it doesn't look like he did. Once he played and was burned a couple of times, did he even see the field again? Maulet is a marginal NFL talent imo. He surprised most everyone and played very well last year, but I'm not sure he could repeat that level of play this year if given the opportunity. The young players will learn from the competition, they will learn from the veterans Desir, Wilson, and Ryan (if the latter is signed), and they'll have to earn their starting spot not have it merely handed to them. Also, as another poster said, Williams likes to keep players fresh, and get everyone involved, so I'm sure that if they are ready to play at the NFL level, they will get time on the field. If they're not ready to see the field, young players in need of development can be placed onto the PS. That's why teams have PSs. The roster is two players larger as is the PS this year. I'm not worrying about losing any of them. On good teams, late round picks never see the field anyway except for STs. IMO we are not trading for Ngakoue or Samuels. That's a pipe dream. I doubt that Douglas is going to give up major draft capital to acquire either player, especially Ngakoue. He'd probably have a to cut a few veterans or get very creative with the contract to fit him in under the cap now. No good Edge rushers are camp cuts or shake loose. The same goes for WRs. Whomever shakes loose will be an older player who is expensive or a mediocre JAG.
It doesn't mean any such thing. He was adding competition. There are never any guarantees with any player a team adds, be it via the draft, FA, trade or as UDFAs. Hairston was not a wasted pick, either. Last year, we were desperate. Douglas was doing everything he could within reason to help the team without sacrificing the ability to get better this year. Rex Hogan worked for the Jets, went to the Colts, then came back to the Jets. He obviously thought highly of Hairston, and Douglas may have as well. It was worth rolling the dice on, and he played well for a minute. He could still develop. Austin is not better than Ryan. Sorry, but that's just silly. Austin may be in Williams' dog house anyway. Williams benched him after he got burned, and like Hairston, I'm not sure if he ever saw the field again. I have hopes for Austin, but he was a 6th round pick. His speed and talent level was higher than that, but he may not be able to stay healthy, or Wilson, Hall and Ryan or Jackson or Guidry might prove to be better. Ryan also plays the outside. At the very least, he would give Williams a lot of options on matchups and coverages, make our pass D a lot better, and the young CBs could learn a lot from him. What if Poole can't repeat his play of last year, or what if he goes down with a serious injury early? Would Ryan be wasted then? If Williams, Gase and Douglas are interested in signing him (which I must assume they are since they are having conversations), then they obviously don't think that he would be a waste.
But your missing that if we sign logan we won't have a pipe line... we will have 4 players who have all been in the league for 4+ years and 2 that are 2nd year players and maybe 1 rookie. You have to actually keep talent coming in. We would be signing another player who is 29 and at cb that is near the end of his career. In return we will be giving up one of the young players. We already added Desir and Wilson who are vets, we had Poole who is way better than Ryan at the position Ryan is best at. We have Austin who should a lot of potential. There is no need for Ryan except depth and he pushed a young player that could play 10+ years off the roster. It's an absolute waste. Hall, Desir, Wilson, Poole, and Austin will all make the team. Hairston or Maulet most likely will. That's 6 spots. Add in Ryan who hasn't ever been really good at anything except the same position Poole plays and your at 7. Or he takes a rookies and drops Hairston, Wilson, or Hall. Hall will not last on PS and would be waste of pick, Wilson was a 6th round pick which would have been a waste. Hairston he traded for last year, and though we recouped the pick it makes that trade even more laughable. All to have a CB play out of position and not at a high level kn a one year deal and close to the end of his career.
I'm not missing anything. You're the one that's missing the point. If we sign Ryan, he plays for us this year, our young CBs learn from Desir and Ryan this year, they study film, work hard, play STs, and then next year they move up to starters or to competing for the starting spot. If Poole and Ryan aren't re-signed, then unless the Jets sign other FA CBs or draft a couple of CBs high, then the young players we have this year will be the starters next year. They ARE the pipeline. That's how the pipeline and the NFL has worked for decades, if not since its inception. Traditionally, rookies never started. They were drafted one year, sat and learned behind a veteran for a year or two, and then played. That's what Parcells always did. He almost never started a rookie. He was afraid of getting beat by a rookie mistake. Poole isn't way better than Ryan. Saying that Ryan has never been really good at anything is wrong and just dumb. Put the crack pipe down. You don't know what the need is, so please stop with your pronouncements. You have no clue what Williams wants or what kind of scheme he is dreaming up. If there was no need or desire to add him, the Jets wouldn't be in talks with him (if they indeed are having discussions/negotiations with Ryan and his agent). You don't know that he will push a player that could play 10 years off the roster. If that happened, the problem isn't Ryan, it's Williams or Gase or Douglas, whomever makes that decision. You are totally wrong about Ryan. You really need to stop. You're making yourself look silly. You don't know more than Williams or Douglas .
Guy, I love ya, but you couldn't be more wrong. I think you obviously have Ryan confused with someone else. Ryan averages 11 passes defensed a season and has had 17 interceptions in his 7-year career. He's a great blitzer and over the last 2 seasons has 8.5 sacks, and 11 for his career. Meanwhile in his 4-year career, Poole has averaged a little over 6 passes defensed, has had only 5 interceptions and 5 sacks.
The only young cbs that will still be able to be on the roster is Austin and Hall. Everyone else is pick up from other teams that should be competing for starting job. Again this will be Wilsons3 or 4th year. He should be competing.. Hairston and Maulet are the same way. 3 years in they should be competing for starting role and no longer development. Hall, Austin, Jackson ,Guidry are the developmental. Maulet us probably a career backup which is fine. Fact is we will have Hall and Austin. Austin showed last year he can play he just need play time. Ryan is at the end of his career and plays well in the slot. He is mediocre at best on the outside. So we can't field 2 slot corners. Poole is obviously better. Again Ryan is a waste. Desir and Wilson both showed promise on the outside the year before last, both had off years last year. Both could be better than Ryan on the outside. Austin showed promise last year and could be better than ryan on the outside. It's a waste.
Poole only started 3 game his 2nd year, I believe he was injured. His rookie was obvious he didn't get a much time as he wasn't a big pick. 4 of his 5 ints came the past 2 years, with 3 last year. Last year he was our best player in coverage. He fits perfectly into GEs system and will most likely improve. I think Poole is a lot better than you give him credit for. Ryan on the other hand would have to play outside where he isn't very good. Again I think it would be a waste or a roster spot and 8-10 million on a player. Especially when there is a good chance any of the other 3 will play better on the outside. That would leave a spot for a development player and leave us 10 million for in season trades.
Fact is most picks usually get a few years to develop. Unless there is something severely wrong like with Polite last year. You never know when you hit a Tyreek Hill in 5th round or a Darren Waller in the 6th. To give up on one of your picks in less than a year means you made a bad pick. With Polite it was a bad pick but it wasn't a Douglas pick. Good gms try to give their pick time to work. It means you made the right choice to begin with. Now 5-7th round picks generally only become depth at best. But you don't use a pick to acquire a player then cut him 4 months later because someone else will work better. It's more likely Douglas cuts Blessuan Austin than anyone he acquired with a pick in the last 12 months.
I have to believe JD and Wiliams have a plan to take the Jets D to an even higher level than last year ..hence the Logan interest and prob signing. Otherwise, I am hearing compelling arguments on TGG from both sides why the deal could be a homerun or complete waste...I am looking forward to seeing who plays better on the Field Poole or R Logan
Must get this done. He's not prime Revis but Logan Ryan is a smart, competent player and will mean we field a passable core of CB's heading into the 2020 season. Hope Desir can at least return to his 2018 level His addition to the defense would bolster an already solid unit (hoping Mosley is ready to go in 2020 from week 1 on) but it's not outlandish to think we can finish with a defensive unit ranked between 9th and 13th in the league. Right around that area. Overall it should be an above average defense. I'd be disappointing if it wasn't Hope we get even average injury luck. 2019 we were flat out decimated
And here’s why Manish made it sound like a sure thing. Ryan to Miami to play in the slot under Flores makes perfect sense for him, I’d assume that’s very much a possibility.
That could be a better fit. But turns out Gregg Williams is a pretty big draw. Players love playing for good coordinators. And GW is a good coordinator. And then there was Gore choosing the Jets due to his man crush on Gase. It's ODD seeing free agents CHOOSING the Jets due to coaching and overall direction. I'm far more used to having to pay FAs like x2 just to get them to look over here!
If draft picks take a few years to develop, what's the issue? Half the guys we have aren't ready to start. It takes a few years. Most teams have 10 CBs on the roster going into training camp. We are going to be at that point. You make the pick work by making that person compete. If he shows potential, and you don't have room for him on the roster, you sign him to the practice squad. He'll still be there.
