It's pretty amazing we're 9-6, considering we're not really good at anything...

Aside from special teams. I mean:

Are we good at passing? Not particuarly, though occasionally.
Are we good at running the ball? Definitely not
Are we good at stopping the pass? Not particuarly
Are we good at stopping the run? Definitely not.

I think the 2006 Jets are the definition of "overachievers" and whose "whole is greater than the sum of its parts." The only issue is that when you're not really good at anything there's a ceiling on how good you can actually be, and it doesn't make me as confident about the future as some on this site are.

Yeh i also agree its alot about the team effort. I also think that with what you said, we are improving at all those things and will only get better over time.

We are above average on defense.
We are above average on offense
We are exceptional on special teams
    We play hard
    We play smart
We manage the game well and have great in-game coaching
    We play as a team

It all adds up to a very good overall team.

I assume that you are basing your conclusions that we aren't good at anything on statistics, or are you believing media experts. I'm of the opinion that we have a very smart coach and more importantly some very smart players who are learning very quickly. Our run defence isn't recognisable now as the first few weeks of the season same could be said of our running game.
I don't know about anybody else but I am excited about our future running game with Houston having a break out season and this 3, 4 system is really taking shape, I haven't seen such energy from our defence for the longest time.
I make no apology for this, we have the smartest QB in the league, sure he doesn't have a spiralling 'bomb' or lazer dart delivery but he does have the most imoprtant asset for any QB in the modern NFL and thats patience, Christmas night was perfect example of waiting for your chances against a stifeling defence. We are in good hands and IF and I say IF we make the play-offs this year nobody will want to play us- what do have to lose-
WE AREN'T GOOD AT ANYTHING- RIGHT?

Some good points but we are very good at a couple of very important things. We have solid return teams and cover teams and usually win field position on special teams. We don't make a lot of errors so we usually pick up yards in the penalty phase of the game. We run an offense that doesn't score a lot of points but we run the clock to the end on every possession and we put ourselves in tons of 3rd and short situations. Because we do that we convert and eat clock and have more plays than our opponents in most games. Those are two things we rarely did under Herm was win the TOP battle and run more plays than the opposition.

Even if your not moving the ball quickly down the field or scoring points running plays and not turning over the ball reduces your opponents opportunities to score. This is the Jets philosophy and becuase we are so desciplined and the league in general lacks descipline it is enough to get us to the playoffs with a relatively easy schedule. We simply are smarter and better coached than most of the teams in the NFL.

No way. The D has been better lately, but the first half of the season, this D put no pressure on anyone.

The funny thing is thru 15 games, we've scored 293 and let up 292. I know it's skewed some by the 41-0 blowout, but still I just found it interesting.

157-74 in our losses (average is 26.17 to 12.33) and 218-136 (24.22 to 15.11) in our wins..

We're 5-3 in games decided by 7 or less points, and 4-3 in games decided by more. We're 5-2 since our bye.

5-2 in games which Pennington is over 200 yds passing. 4-4 when he's under 200, including our last 4 losses.

    We've only had a 100 yard rusher 3 times (Washington*2, Houston once)

However, we do not play dumb (usually... except when we go for TDs against the Colts instead of an FG or not go for it against Buffalo.. notice I did NOT include the onside kick here, ON PURPOSE... not something I would have done, but definitely not dumb).

Absolutely. These coaches are doing more with what we've got than anyone would have ever dreamed. And after all, isn't that what Bill Belichick has been doing for years?

without that improvement from the defense we'd be an 8-8 team

Basic Competence in the Execution of plays, and Not Turning the Ball over, or comitting penalties, will get you to 8-10 wins year in year out.......

(It's the one thing Herm had going for him...)

I think when this all changed was the second half of the Browns game. In the first half they let Charlie Frye just sit there -- thinking that dropping 7 into coverage would confuse him. In the second half, they blitzed the hell out of him and basically, from that point on, the defensive calls have been much more agressive, IMO.

This team is actually very similar to the 2001 Patriots when they won it all. They can do a little of everything, but nothing super well. I don't see us going on a magical SB run, but I can dream can't I?
