Chuck Knoll took the worst NFL team to the playoffs in only 4 years. He s considered a legend to many.

Most of you would’ve wanted him fired during his first year bc the team was still shit.

We are allowed to be disappointed with Saleh so far, especially after we’re constantly told to be patient. And it’s also possible to be disappointed yet not want him to be fired. Nuanced opinions are possible.

I replied to another thread yesterday about Saleh. A lot of people don’t remember Bill Parcells rookie season with the Giants - they were awful and finished 3-12-1. He was almost fired but given another chance to turn it around. He became a different coach and the team quickly became winners.

I’m not saying Saleh will be another Parcells but this kind of thing can happen with rookie coaches ….

This is the same as people excusing bad rookie seasons by QB's because Peyton Manning had a bad rookie season.

99% of coaches who look shitty their first year end up just being shitty coaches.

When have the Jets ever gotten lucky with a coach turning it around? This team is a coach killer. Parcells came here and couldn't get it done. He signs off and hands the keys to a person I shall not name. He leaves at his hiring press conference. Coslet, Carroll, Gase, Bowles just a dumpster of bad coaches.

Yeah the NFL is definitely the same game in 2021 as it was in 1969.

Most people wanted Jim Tomsula fired after one year too. He probably was taking that team to the playoffs by year four as well.

I think this guy has a point. We should sign Robert Saleh to a 20 year extension.

Time and tradition will take care of the rest.

Give him another 3 years. I only have 3 days left.

I don't necessarily think that Saleh was a bad hire. He's just extremely lost. We'll see. Some folks are just better in niche positions. Look how Todd Bowles is flourishing at what he's used to. : /

    EDIT: AUTOCORRECT.

At least when Parcells was here we knew the Jets had a good chance of winning on Sunday. At the very least, we were respected. This current edition is a joke.

At the very least those of us who did see the 1st Jet Superbowl will all be dead and gone by the time Saleh's 20yr extension is done. Man would have returned to the moon and China will be the new boss of the planet.

The name is Chuck Noll. There is no silent K.

The Steelers were so bad in the 60s because they had no money, they almost folded. College players would be drafted by both leagues (AFL,NFL) but they would play for whoever offered the most money. You may have heard of Joe Namath, one such player. The Steelers had to draft inferior talent because they couldn't outbid anyone. They often traded away their 1st round selections for that reason, choosing to load up on 2nd & 3rd rounders. (and missing out on HOFers Namath, Butkus, Gale Sayers, etc.)

They hired Noll in 1969 and won only one game. However, for the 1970 season the leagues merged and needed 3 NFL teams to join the "AFC." The offer was $3 million to any NFL team to make the switch. The Colts, Browns and Steelers did so. This move rescued the Steelers franchise. The infusion of cash and no longer having to worry about missing out on draft picks changed everything. And in 1970 they selected HOFer Terry Bradshaw no.1 overall

Chuck Noll was a good coach and a good man, but to say the Steelers won because they were patient with him, is just bastardizing the story of what happened. AND to compare the Steelers of the late 60s to the Jets of 2021, who are at NO such disadvantage is really dumb

This is the same garbage argument as believing that Zach Wilson will be the next Peyton Manning because both of them threw a lot of interceptions in their respective rookie seasons. As if guys like Chuck Noll and Peyton Manning grow on trees.

Do you have any idea how disrespectful that is to Noll to suggest that anyone can do what he did? That's just gross.

Yes, Parcells gave the Jets instant credibility. Its been over 20 years since he left and we have not progressed and this with multiple owners. The current ones I believe are half the problem. Just a couple of rich nerds who think owning this team is just good for a tax write off. Say what you will about Al Davis and Jerry Jones they are 100% into their teams. Our owner took off to play Ambassador for 4 years.

Since reading comprehension seems to be a problem for you, I’ll clarify my point.

We don’t know what we have in Saleh (or Wilson) bc it hasn’t even been 1 full season.

I know a lot of posters here think they can judge talent and are ready to write off both, but I’ve read their posts and am pretty confident their opinions don’t hold much weight.

I stand by my statements, and I do so without taking a cheap shots at you, because my statements are solid enough to do so without relying on such tactics. Chuck Noll is a legendary story that will most likely never repeat itself. When you blindly say that Robert Saleh could be the next Chuck Noll, you cheapen just what a special coach and a special accomplishment his career was. You are basically saying "If Chuck Noll can do it. ANYBODY can!"

Again, I find that gross and disrespectful.

A better, modern day example of a coach who initially looked like he didn't have a clue, and greatly adjusted his coaching style, rewarding his organization for their patience, is Ron Rivera.

Rivera wasn't "Riverboat Ron" like he is known as today. He talks at length about the changes he made in the way he approached the game and his management style. In his 3rd season he was 13-21 and 0-2 on the season when he lost a game in Buffalo he had no business losing, he was on the hot seat big time at that time and it was that loss that lead to his changes (12-2 the rest of that season btw)

I hope Saleh can grow into the job like Rivera did. I think one change could be more experience on the staff and less "buddies"

I stand by my statement of you having limited reading comprehension and I’ll add the observation that you are a true Noll fanatic. Like a serious fanatic who should be observed by professionals….
