Players of other positions taken with top 3 picks bust a lot too. I think the smart thing to do is look to trade down but stay high enough that you can still get a player in the top-tier of the position group or groups you want. For instance, last year, if the 49ers had really wanted Wilson, we should have swapped picks with them, and then taken Lance. And this year, we should trade back a few picks with a team that falls in love with someone and then take whichever top-tier pass rusher or wide receiver is available.
I wouldn't have taken Lance at 3 or 12. If we would have taken the niners trade I would have done what the Eagles did when they traded down to 12. Gave the niners 3rd back to move up to 10 and get a #1 WR.
High pick QB's bust at a higher level than any other position. This is because you can't hang out on the field being below average at that position for long. Virtually any other position the GM and HC can have their heads in the sand about but QB doesn't allow that particular stupidity.
Devonta Smith was a very good receiver as a rookie. I think he has a real shot at being the best WR out of this class even with the head start that Chase has at the moment.
You can get that upside much more cheaply than on the top 3 picks. On the other hand when you swing and miss on a high pick QB you are just totally screwed for years.
Colts in a potential superbowl window with good players everywhere. Yet they can't get over Andrew Luck. Really shows how you need a QB to contend. Sent from my M2007J20CG using Tapatalk
