Hey guys. I don't know why alot of you guys are so quick to dump David Barrett. I thought that this year he was excellent in coverage. For a guy who didn't start that often, he came and held his own. He is young and he can play safety, and every corner spot. I think that if he doesn't start he would be an excellent nickel. I just don't know how much he gets paid. Any thoughts?
Barrett is an asset to the team. If Jets' had a better pass rush, CB's would be to make more plays & would also look alot better. Will Asante Sameuls make as many INt's with the Jets' pass rush ? NO!!!!! Pass rush helps CB's alot.
barrett signed a 4-year, $12,000,000 ,Im not sure what the cap hit figure is. Too much money for someone who rotates into the game.
I couldn't agree with you more. It even makes me angry to read all these stories about how David Barrett is on the Jets chopping block. Although I do agree that 3 million is too much to be paying a reserve, Barrett does a fantastic job of spelling our starters and we need him on this team. Maybe we could restructure his contract.
Agreed. He doesn't warrant the money paid to him not to start. See ya, thanks for comin' out. draft or FA to plug th roto/nickel spot for less loot.
I think it all comes down to this: We cannot pay a non-starting CB a $3+million base salary. I think that most people agree that if he is willing to restructure to a more reasonable salary he can stick around. BUT, who's to say that he IS willing? Without the threat of cutting him, why would he restructure? It is not like he gets a lot of respect (journeyman Poteat started over him in many games).
what's real funny is we always seem to throw ridiculous money on short term guy's ,I know its usally back loaded but the overall amount for these cast off's from other teams is crazy.
Cut him not just because of the obvious point bieng spoken of *money* but because the guy gets burnt time and time again. I think he was a horrible signing and is not that good of a cornerback. While he might have decent intstincts he does not have the speed to make good on the instincts. Plus he doesnt have the speed to consistantly stick with recievers.
id rather see tannenbaum rework his contract so he can stay on the team...he did it for a handful of other players...why not barrett?
eh, disagree with you, unless we're arguing over semantics. Barrett doesn't get burnt in the sense that he gives up big plays or TD's; rather, he plays so much cushion that he constantly yields 1st downs, with ease. he's never pressing a WR at the line. now, this can probably be attributed to his lack of speed, the coaches fearing that he'll get burnt deep so they have him play off the WR. regardless, i've never been a fan of the guy and i think he isn't worth the money he makes. even if he stays for less money, he'll still be allowing drives to continue and will hardly ever come up with INT's in which he breaks on the ball. cheers
I don't get why people always rip Barrett. I think he's a contributor to this team, and I liked him as the #2 CB even. His downfall is apparently speed, but he has pretty good technique and hits like a truck for a CB. I obviously don't want Barrett as the #2 CB next year though, and want an upgrade at the position like everyone else but don't get rid of this kid. The only reason we should consider cutting him is because of his salary, but seeing how we're not in any cap trouble I'd want to keep him. If we sign a free agent CB to start alongside Dyson, having the FA, Dyson, Miller, and Barrett as our top 4 CBs would be killer. That is one hell of a dime defense in my opinion.
I wouldn't mind keeping him. If hes going to sub-in and sub back out then no, lets cut him. He's still a very decent CB.
Yeah, Barrett's weaknesses are not in the long game at all. He very rarely gets burned deep and most of his int's come on flag plays down the sideline. His short game is much weaker because he definitely gives up some cushion, particularly on the faster receivers. This is why he is a liability when forced to cover a star receiver. The Marvin Harrisons and Hines Ward's eat him up short because he's not adept at stopping the quick hitter in the middle of the field and the Roy Williams and Lee Evans burn him deep because he just cannot keep up with them. As a second corner, when he can be placed on the T.J. Houshmandzadeh's and Plaxico Burrusses, he is a very good cover guy and a big asset in the defense.
Barett could be a great nickelback he's physical and plays like a safety hopefully we could just restructure his contract.
C'mon!!!! Barrett is a mediocre CB at best. If anything Miller and Dyson should be the starters next year.
Iv'e been on his case for some time. The guy isn't terrible but with everything at play here the guys needs to be released.
