Sorry to disagree but except for 99 our LBers need a huge upgrade. Stopping runs 5 or more yards DF is totally unacceptable at least IMHO
No cause Hobson & JV are just pushed around by the other side like they were just a piece of paper being shuffle from side to side
MHO of Barton, JV & Hobby are very, very average at best. I would even go so far to say all 3 maybe below the min NFL standard. While I think Man is on the right track I think it is a mistake to reup Hobby. Better see what is out that since on plus/minus scale it is all equal & maybe we will get lucky & get even a small upgrade there
Or upgrade the defensive line to allow the linebackers to roam more. You have to admit champ, besides Robertson, nothing much was going on in the front this season.
Kimo was the weak link, Robertson was all over the place but Kimo got about 27 tackles all season........
He shut down alot of WR's, and I think he had 10 INT'S the entire season. So I wouldn't say he had one good game.
Okoye is too small to be an ideal NT in our 3/4. I want someone north of 335 like Terdell Sands the UFA from the Raiders.
Well I have seen many a LBer in my days of watching FB & sorry to say JV & Hob do not have "it" whatever "it" is. Even in the 4-3 JV DIDNOT excel if you remember my comments at that time. He still was tackling the other side 5 or more yds DF sorry to say. Also, neither Hob or JV are good blitzers which is needed when you play the 3-4 with 3 down lineman & then 1 of the 4 LBers becomes the 4th rusher. Sorry to say to overtake the Pats if possible means beside upgrading the DL we must also upgrade the LBers
i really like this D-line. Shaun Ellis has done a great job pressuring the quarterback this year and was very effective when we picked up our rush defense in the 2nd half of this past season. I like Dewayne's move from NT to RE, but he would need to drop quite a few pounds to be as effective as possible (just as they slimmed down Shaun Ellis before the season). Okoye is a freakin beast, he's a 310 NT who's best 40 time was a 4.95 and I think he can be really successful in the NFL, just as much as Haoli Ngata or more.
OLB and RDE need an upgrade; maybe NT One amazing thing watching the Pats the last few years is their length on the front; their OLB's and DE's are all 6'4" and up; they interfere with the passing game as much with their hands up as they do with pressure. BTY and Ellis, who also happen to be the better pass rushers on this team, fit the bill. Dewayne would not as a DE. He looked better as the NT later in the year, and I'm happy to keep him there, but he is not a DE type in this defense. Barton has been one of the Jets' best LB's in my recent memory, and for all of Vilma's poor stats this year, he is one of only two Jets defenders to play every snap, so we know the coaching staff likes him. I think Hobson would be a better fit on the inside. To upgrade at OLB, how about Texas' Tim Crowder, maybe in the second round? Or--in a most unlikely scenario because of the rarity of NFL player-for-player trades--how about reuniting Dewayne and Herm by trading for Derrick Johnson? He is a beast, and the prototypical 3-4 OLB. DeWayne and another Herm guy--maybe McCareins or Barret. Huttchinson, in the Star-Ledger, also mentioned that Banta-Cain is a free agent this offseason. For RDE, the guys I like most are Adam Carriker and Florida's Jarvis Moss. I watched Nebraska v Auburn specifically to see Carriker play. Nebraska's defense was incredibly disciplined in filling and holding their gaps. Carriker in particular was in the right place most of the time; he was moved around the line but held his ground no matter where he lined up, and was able to shed his blocker and attack when it was a passing play and ran stunts very well; in other words, a nice skill set for a 3-4 DE. Moss, who may not be in the draft this year, is a powerful, very tall DE who holds his ground against the run and applies a good pass rush; he doesn't blaze around the OT's, but rather plays in a small area to get it done, as required in this defense. So far as CB's go, I think Samuel will be out of the Jets desired price range, and out of the Pats' range as well. I think he makes more sense for the Giants. The Jets have young guys in Miller and Coleman they're working on, and I think Mangini is very comfortable to go with another draft pick rather than break the bank on a free agent CB. I wonder if he'll keep Poteat around?
I agree about Coleman, I think we need to upgrade our secondary and d-line, I can live with the LB's. Yes, Barton and Vilma are a bit undersized, but they will make more plays with a big NT in there.
