I'd say offensive holding, then roughing. Holding happens on every single play and they have used it to control entire games, but it makes for a boring-as-fuck contest. Roughing opportunities happen less often but they change the complexion of the game a lot more drastically.

Offensive holding iin the NFL is a touch foul in the NBA.

Why does the NFL see the "need" to continuously change the rules? I'm not saying they shouldn't ever change, but their trying to micromanage things, and control outcomes is ridiculous. I believe this is connected to the gambling industry which has had its hooks into the NFL since the beginning. Leave well enough alone.

    Good job NC.

having just one cut down day means players who would have been cut earlier won't have a chance to get picked up, as about 1500 players will be trying to get picked up all at once.

plus JD will have to cut 40 some players all on the same day. Maybe teams will start cutting players via Twitter

Thanks. I have to assume that the owners didn't make that decision in a vaccum without consulting their GMs and CSs. If so, then they're a bunch of rich idiots.

I don't think it will be a problem. Yes, a lot of players will get released on the same day, but if they're good enough, other teams will see that they were released and will seek to sign them.

I imagine that some players will still get cut early. As I understand it, the rule doesn't say that teams have to release them all on one day, just that there won't be two cut down days. Players who just aren't good enough for one team could get released earlier. I could be mistaken, but a year or so ago when they went from 3 cut-down days to just 2, I don't remember that there were any problems with players getting signed by other teams or of GMs and HCs complaining. For that matter, I haven't heard any grousing from GMs or HCs since the rule was passed. In addition, I suspect that GMs already give their GM friends a heads up that a player is going to be released that they don't plan on bringing back, to give that player a chance to catch on with that team. I think it's quite possible that older veteran players could wind up getting traded rather than cut/waived. It's a level playing field, and every NFL team will get notification of whom the players are that were released by the other teams. The better GMs may already have a good idea who many of the players are who will be released (their head of NFL scouting could keep their GMs apprised). There are also players whom other teams will be on the look for. Perhaps they planned on drafting that player in a previous draft but the other team took that player before they could. They'll also know what their needs and wants are, and what positions they will monitor closely. For example, if the Jets are concerned about their OL at that point, they will have a pretty good idea of which teams may be cutting a veteran OL, and they may contact that other team about a possible trade, or just monitor however they are notified by the NFL very closely every minute on cut-down day. You'd better believe that teams will be geared up for the release day.

I wonder if pass rush will go the way of the full back,
Ya good points. But on the other side of the coin, JoeD will be handed a list of 1500 players who just got cut with about 1 day to go thru the list and contact any potential players.

Thanks. As I said, however, JD may have a pretty good idea who each team will be cutting. He knows players that are scheme and character fits for what they want here, and whom they might like to add if cut. I'm certain that Rex Hogan and every other person in the Jets Scouting Dept., Pro Personnel Dept. and FO will be watching the waiver wire for certain names. It's not like they're gonna be handed a list of 1500 names and have no clue who the players are and have to research them. There may be some teams where the Jets know they have no interest in any of their players because of the schemes those teams play. They know which teams run the same schemes or very similar schemes. They know what their needs are. So they will be looking for targeted players and positions, not really having to rummage through a list containing 1,500 names.
