Wow. You're on a roll!

Anywho, Coleman should lose his starting job next season. Heck, he already lost it to Strait. He just doesnt make the bigplays he used to anymore. Smith plays the run a lot better, he's a great tackler and pretty good in coverage.

Smith was known for being a team leader and his smarts on the defense. I wouldn't be sad about him starting. Plus, it will make the 2006 draft look amazingly greater than it already was.

Smith played a lot better then i thought. In limited time he looked like a true playmaker.

I like Smith, I also would root for him. I think Tannenbaum and Mangini know what they are doing on draft day.

Smith played well on special teams this year. Id expect one of them to really shine in training camp

Smith played well down the stretch and certainly earned himself the opportunity to fight for it... Coleman has been little better than average since his amazing rookie season.

Regardless, I think the safety position is locked up; now just square away the #2 CB role.

    definitely saw this coming.

i wonder if they'll even resign Coleman when his contract is up. he may want more than back-up money.

    cheers

Id like to see Smith in the starting role because Coleman is just average. He doesnt normally hurt us but he also normally doesnt help us. I think Smith has potential to become an excellent complement to Kerry Rhodes. Plus, i doubt he would be the one calling the plays in the secondary. I think thats Kerry's job.

Smith is such a fierce hitter. He will lay some people out. Coleman is an above average safety who seems to do everything well. This should be an interesting battle in training camp.

Yeah that's my take on the situation. Coleman is a solid safety without anything that stands out. He has declined a bit over the last year and basically is treading water. Smith is a better hitter with more size, although a bit less speed, and he looked really good in the cover packages they used him in last year.

Typically a 3-4 is better off with the enforcer than the all-around player at safety.

Cimini's final blog about the season on nydailynews.com hinted that Smith could take Coleman's job next year. He also loved Mangold and B. Smith.

Also thought he had some funny comments about Chatham, Schlegel and Von Oelhoffen. He thinks Goddard could push for a starting job at RT, too.

The stats have been tabulated. The film has been broken down. The information-seeking calls have been made to various peeps around the league. So now it’s time for the Jets’ final grades:

QB Chad Pennington (B): A feel-good story, but those 16 interceptions didn’t feel so good.
QB Patrick Ramsey (D): We hardly knew ye.
QB Kellen Clemens (Inc.): Three words of advice: Be like Chad.

RB Leon Washington (B): Memorable football card, even more memorable screen pass.
RB Cedric Houston (C+): Parcells has a name for guys like him - JAG. Just another guy.
RB Kevan Barlow (C-): Won’t be re-signing with the Niners, that’s for sure.
    RB Derrick Blaylock (Inc.): Who?
RB Curtis Martin (Inc): A Hall of Famer in every way.

FB B.J. Askew (C): Defining moment: Topless at Lambeau.
FB James Hodgins (C-): What’d you expect from a guy off the street?
FB Stacy Tutt (C): A diamond in the rough?

WR Laveranues Coles (A-): Want to freak him out? Just say, “Two-a-days.”
WR Jerricho Cotchery (A-): It’s official: He’s a Patriots killer. All they need is another 10 of those.
WR Tim Dwight (C+): Couldn’t stay on the field long enough to make an impact.
WR Justin McCareins (C): Classy guy. Just not Mangini’s type of player.
WR Brad Smith (B-): Football player.
    WR Wallace Wright (C+): Rudy.

TE Chris Baker (B): A career year as a pass catcher. Solid blocker.
TE Sean Ryan (C): Anyone is better than Doug Jolley.

OL D’Brickashaw Ferguson (C+): Needs to go on the Mangini diet. You expect more from the No. 4 overall pick.
OL Pete Kendall (B): Two-time winner of the media’s “Good Guy” Award. Good player, too.
OL Nick Mangold (A): A Pro Bowler in 2007. You read it here first.
OL Brandon Moore (B-): Has to cut down on the penalties.
OL Anthony Clement (C): Got better as the year went on.
OL Adrian Jones (D): Don’t drink and drive.
OL Wade Smith (C-): Let’s just say he’s no Fuzzy Thurston.
OL Na’Shan Goddard (Inc.): Don’t laugh, but this guy could be in the right-tackle mix for ’07.
OL Trey Teague (Inc.): Never played a down. Bad ankle.

DE Shaun Ellis (B-): Followed a bad year with a so-so year.
DE Kimo von Oelhoffen (D): Just call him Kimo von Old. Can’t believe they gave him a $3 million signing bonus.
DE Bobby Hamilton (C+): Same numbers as Kimo von Old, but played half the amount of snaps.
DE Dave Ball (Inc.): Too small for the 3-4.

DT Dewayne Robertson (B+): Atypical nose tackle adapted nicely to new role. Didn’t talk to the media all year. Ah, so many missed sound bytes.
DT Rashad Moore (C): Promising start, but disappeared from the radar screen.
DT C.J. Mosley (C-): A sleeper who never woke up.

LB Jonathan Vilma (C): A good player who had a disappointing year. No impact plays. Still having Brady nightmares.
LB Eric Barton (B-): Did okay. Gotta wonder if he’s a Mangini guy.
LB Victor Hobson (B+): Makes plays when he’s going forward (like to the QB), but he’s not a sideline-to-sideline threat.
LB Bryan Thomas (A-): I admit it, I never thought he’d adapt to the new role. I was wrong.
LB Brad Kassell (C-): Why they used him so much I’ll never know.
LB Matt Chatham (C+): Earns his money on special teams. Most quoted part-time player in the league.
    LB Anthony Schlegel (D): Oops.
LB Cody Spencer (D): Never got a chance to rip the lid off the Spencer story.

CB Andre Dyson (B-): Best of a weak bunch of corners.
CB Hank Poteat (C): A guy who has been cut seven times wound up starting six games. ‘Nuff said.
CB David Barrett (C-): Counting the days until he can hit the open market.
CB Justin Miller (D): 32 career games, 0 interceptions. Also needs to take tackling lessons.
CB Drew Coleman (C-): Misses one big tackle against the Bears and he’s sent into the witness protection program.

S Kerry Rhodes (A-): Playmaker. He’ll get to Hawaii next year.
S Erik Coleman (B-): Reclaimed his job after a slow start, but never really made any impact plays.
S Eric Smith (C+): He’s going to push Coleman for a starting job in ’07.
S Rashad Washington (C): Good thing for special teams.
S Jamie Thompson (Inc.): Just happy to be here.

PK Mike Nugent (A-): Automatic. Now about those kickoffs…
P Ben Graham (B): So much for the sophomore slump.
    KR Justin Miller (A): Aloha.
PR Leon Washington (C): Stick to running back.
LS James Dearth (A-): You never read a Dearth story, did you? There’s a reason for that. An anonymous long snapper is a good long snapper.

HC Eric Mangini (A): Knows his stuff. Now the honeymoon is over. Let’s see how he deals with expectations.
OC Brian Schottenheimer (A-): A weak-armed QB, no running back and the Jets finished 18th in scoring. Give him a medal.
DC Bob Sutton (B): Rebounded after a slow start.
STC Mike Westhoff (A): Good thing Mangini kept him around.
GM Mike Tannenbaum (B): Did better with the draft than in free agency/pro trades. The overall talent still needs a major upgrade. Let’s see what he can do with money to spend.

I like Smith because he can be an in the box guy who can help against the run a lot. His coverage, pretty good, wasn't as bad as his rookie reports reports were, and he was healthy. I liked what I saw from him and wouldn't mind him starting at all.

    Interesting take from Cimini.

Accurately portrayed Chad's contributions, which basically mirror the Jet's season as they have so often in his tenure. Pegged the other offensive skill players perfectly in my opinion. He called out D'Brick with the C+ without suggesting he's a failure, which was both accurate and diplomatic. But then he gave the guards B/B- despite the fact that the Jets could not run up the gut at all this season. Combine that with an A for Mangold and something is not adding up just right.

Then on defense he gave Vilma a C and Hobson a B+. *blink* *blink* It's not so much that I think Vilma was not deserving of the C but Hobson gets a B+ for yet another season of almost zero impact plays? He give the corners lousy grades and yet the Jets ranked 12th in the league in defensive passing rating with virtually no pass rush and undermanned the whole year due to the blitzers they were sending when a weak pass rush materialized. That makes no sense to me at all.

He nailed the rest of it pretty well though.

First solid thing Cimini has written all year. Pretty accurate grades in my book and some good commentary. I actually enjoyed reading that.
