Now I understand. You were expecting Rodgers to repeat his performance from last year and we go 10-7. I will agree with that kind of performance we would right around there, maybe 11 wins. But we didn't trade what we did for a repeat of his year's performance. We could have gotten that out of Carr or Jimmy G assuming he stayed in one piece. The expectation was that Rodgers would be better than last year. That doesn't mean be needed to have a year like he did in 2020 or 2021. Personally I don't think anyone signed off the street is going to have a 26 TD 12 INT type season with us. I think they would perform poorer than Rodgers did last year with GB. And that wouldn't get us to the playoffs. Just my two cents.
The media isn’t pointing it out, but Philly isn’t playing well right now even with Hurts. They were incredibly fortunate that Jefferson fumbled at the goal line before the half. Literal 10 point swing. That said they likely have enough to qualify for playoffs in weak NFC with Mariota. Answer: NFC: Philly SF Dallas Maybe Atlanta (NFC South is awful and Ridder sucks anyway) AFC: Nobody. Conference is too loaded this year.
My expectation was based on recent form but I was hopeful (based on us having better receivers and him not having a thumb injury) that he would be better then that, which as you point out is why we wanted him. I would disagree on the possibility of getting in Carr or Jimmy as they would of wanted the security of a 3 to 4 year contract which would of de facto made them the QB1 way past the terms of Zach's current contract. Doing that would of been JD signalling that Zach was washed and he had indeed drafted a bust & it's also the reason we can't switch to a Cousins or other QB1 strategy. We're looking for a competent QB who can come in for 1 season and have enough cachet (SB winner, PO success, Pro Bowler) to allow us to bench Zach gracefully and treat this season as just a temporary diversion from the Rodgers SB/Zach redevelopment plan that JD's future hinges on.
Rodgers stated he wanted to play a few more years and by the looks of it he will be back next season. How do you tie that into your ascertation that JD was looking to save faith by signing a one year QB? Plus JD has already moved on from several 2nd round picks. I don't think his ego is what you think it is.
Not ego but realism. Any GM entering his 4th season might be looking over his shoulder if; A. Your record is 13-37. B. You've no playoff appearances. C. You've busted out on some key positions in the draft. Any other semi-professional franchise would see him on the hotseat and if Becton and Wilson are finally consigned to the status of confirmed busts then I don't know why we're keeping JD around.
He drafted three stars last year, but he also drafted three stars in four years, which doesn't sound as impressive. (Regarding this year's class, given Joe Tippman is a backup and Will McDonald is somehow inactive, this year's class isn't inspiring any confidence.)
I would only make that kind of guarantee if Rodgers wants and is able to comeback. If he does then the idea of sticking to the plan of Rodgers for a SB run with Zach learning under him is still a viable reason to keep things intact. If he's not then we'll need a new QB plan and why would you trust JD to make that pick and have his 3rd go at forging a Jets destiny? Only reason would be if Saleh somehow goes near .500 again and you want to keep him around another year in which case you keep the GM/HC futures synched up. If Saleh has us at 3 or 4 wins then you might want him gone which then asks the question of whether you want to give JD a second chance at picking his HC and a 2 or 3 year window with a new coach?
