The last thing the Jets need to do is trade away picks for guys like Clinton Portis (who hasn't been good since he left Denver and was outplayed this year by Ladell Betts), Michael turner (who although has potential no one know what kind of back this guy really is), or Deuce (who i love but is also injury prone and will cost us a high pick). If your not getting an elite talent like a Bush or tomilson then it's just not worth it to give up picks for a back when the rest of them are a dime a dozen. With an upgrade at RT, a TE that can block, and another year under the belt of Ferg and mangold our running game will be much improved next year. Remember Mangini saw the Patriots win two super bowls with the likes of Kevin Faulk and Antwan Smith and those guys make Leon and Cedric look like Marshall Faulk and Jim Brown. In my opinion the focus of this draft should be stopping the run and depth at corner. Fixing those two areas will bring us to the next level quicker than anything else. Whether it be at NT DE or linebacker we need to get guys in here that will stop the run. After that offensively we need help at RT, TE, maybe before RB. I hate to say this but even though becht had stone hands and a YAC that was nonexistant the guy really was an asset in our running game. Baker is a great reciever but it would be nice to get a guy in here who can be a dual threat. Of course depending on what Free agents we bring in here things could change. If a guy like Lynch or Bush is there for us at the right spot and Mangini and Tannenbaum feel they are getting an elite back then go for it but we definately shouldn't feel forced to get a back early in the draft or even worse to trade away picks for a back that isn't even that much of an improvement.
Portis was hurt this year, but was really good in 2005 and wasn't bad in 2004 either. He's only 25. He's a big time back. Turner is unproven, but he has a lot of talent and is young. A lot of people feel there are only a handful of teams he wouldn't be starting on in this league. He has to prove it, but he could be a good one. Deuce had a bad injury last year, but he had a really good year this year, and they say with his type of injury running backs don't get all the way back until their 2nd year back from it. Not sure if I'd want him because of his age though, when there are younger options. I think you are undervaluing some of the guys who are out there. And while it's true that the Pats won 2 superbowls without a real good running back, they did go out and get one when they had the chance, and had what was probably their best team with him. And they are still putting a lot of focus on running back, as shown by them drafting Maroney.
No I can't hear you out, Look at every team in the playoffs right now and what do they have ? A Runningback or 2 that can carry the load. I need that consitency in my life.
I agree. Given a couple of upgrades on the OL, the Leon Washington-Cedric Houston tandem can be effective. We need to beef up both of the lines and hopefully sign a starting CB in free agency.
I'm sorry but they're not feature backs ... they are role players and we need a workhorse... i have faith in tangini will do the right thing... what that right thing is i have no idea
Yep I like Houston and Washington but by no means are they premier backs, they are just role players who are good backups. If we have big aspirations then rb should be upgraded because it can be.
I think Leon can be the feature back. Even if he's not one of the best RBs in the league (or even top 20), who cares? Another solid offensive lineman or a DE that better fits the 3-4 is more important right now.
They're not trading for Portis. They might draft a RB though if one of the good ones are available in Rounds 1,2,3
I do not understand... How is it that the Jets can't fix other positions like the DL as well as get a starting RB? NEWS FLASH: The Jets will not be trading every pick to get Michael Turner, Deuce McAllister or Clinton Portis. I really only want Turner out of those three, but you catch my drift.
I think Leon could be an everydown back with Cedric pounding it up the middle. Therefore we should get a Mauling run blocker at RT and RG via draft and free agency. Brick and Mangold have been good this year and Kendall has maybe 1 or 2 years left in him. Also I think we should draft either a 3-4 DE or NT either leaving D-Rob at NT or moving him to DE. I guess its a win win situation because Robertson can dominate at both.
I hear you on this one. As long as we can upgrade the right side of our o-line I think we can see a huge improvement in the running game regardless of what happens to our backfield.
i hear you too, but hear me out bud, Chad Pennington threw 485 passes this season, which in my opinion is way too many for a man with a twice repaired shoulder...its 85 more then he threw in 02 when he played 15 games...he was 7th in the league this year is passes attempted,he needs a runningback that can allow him to not throw so many passes a game, and a way to balance the offense and make that Play Action that he has mastered so well, be effective...a reason to fear the PA....a good runningback, and balanced offense, a reason to be feared... and yes, our second priority should be the d line third the LB core fourth the O line fifth the TE but we need to address the RB situation....no one is really scared of washington/ houston move washington to a number 2 and add a legit number 1, now teams have a reason to fear playing us
:rofl2:  ok, now that im done laughing, let me tell you why im laughing....you realize that guys like bush and LT are top 3-5 picks in the draft. theres no way we get that type of player UNLESS WE HAVE A TOP 5 DRAFT PICK. i, hopefully along with the FO, and a lot of folks here know we need to address the ground game. we cant keep our defense off the field unless we can sustain drives. what helps to do that? a solid RB. i like leon, but wouldnt bless him as the second comming just yet. the guys a high calibur 3rd down back. and that should be his role, at least for another year or 2 (along with PR duties). RB by commitie is good for us when we have no featured back. to be successfull, you need one. while im iffy on the prospect of giving up a first rounder for turner, i think it would be much better spent than the jolley move. (not tough to say), but considering that turners calibur of player is high for 26, its not a CRAZY trade. this has to be the most laughable thing ive seen anyone post about the RB situation, and either pro or con as to why we should stick to who we have. the pats won despit only having a mediocre RB because they had a pro bowl QB and a very very good defense. along with the high quality CS. but saying that faulk/smith make our guys look all world? did you ever watch them play? if you did, i would think you would be smart enough to convey the truth instead of making up some crazy shit like that. while i dont disagree with your assessment that we could use help on the offensive side at TE and RT, i dont think those needs superceed the RB position. we have a quality TE in baker, and clements is solid. (i would like to bring in langstion walker, but thats me). i think you can address TE in the later rounds, maybe taking a guy like clark harris. he should be there in the 4th round. the running game should be addressed by getting turner (portis sucks out of den, and duece is way too beat up)...even if it means a first round pick. can you tell me we would get a player any more proven as a RB @ 26 in the draft? no, we couldnt. its impossible. turners a solid back who got 500+ yds on the ground despite backing up the best in the league. we also need, desperately need a FB. i would love to see brian leonard get in here and be that guy. he has all the tools to be a solid player. i may be a bit biased because of where my loyalties are, but the guy is a very good FB. lead blocking, pass protection, catching the ball and rushing....the guys as capable a FB as youll find throughout the college ranks. finally....Anthony Becht? dude, the guy was too small to play OT so he said TE....we dont need another tight end like becht. we need a TE who is well rounded. someone who can block well, and still has soft enough hands to grab 20 balls. mind you, im just going on about our offense here, and wont address your def thoughts...but come on man....saying that the old pats backs make our current ones look like HoFers????:rofl2::rofl2: .........sorry, thought i was done...
uh, me!!!!! you think that if youre RB was in the bottom third of the league that there shouldnt be a change made? mediocrity shouldnt sit well with anyone....especially when it comes to football.
I absolutely agree with your opinion of PORTIS and TURNER. Why do guys take delight in undervaluing guys like them? makes no sense to me!
i really dont get why everyone here hates on brandon moore....the guy played well this year, earning praise from mangini quite a bit, as well as being named offensive PotW a few times. he isnt going anywhere guys. sure hes a bit undersized at 295 for an interior lineman, but hes good. can anyone tell me why they hate him so much and want him gone?
i dont think its undervaluing duece....its more like buyer beware. granted, he wouldnt be playing in a dome if he came here, so he might not get injured as often, but he still gets hurt more than i like to see when it comes to your featured back. maybe i got spoiled b/c of martin, but durability is a huge deal... out of the 3 names getting tossed around i would rather see turner than duece. turner duece somebody else another dude portis id take the guy with less mileage on his legs, who knows the OC, who the OC knows. if schottys still here, hell know what we can do with/get out of turner. id trust his assessment....i guess well see if we end up trying to deal for him....and for what cost.
I really hate this patriot thing where all we do is follow the freaking patriots. Enough already. The patriots were able to pull it off because of Tom Brady. We have Chad Pennington. A twice repaired shoulder. and really only two threats in the passing game as far as coles and cotchery. Pennington was known for his play action and hasnt been able to use that. Why everyone is so against a RB just because of the damn patriots is ridiculous. Plain and simple we don't have one. No teams have to game plan for our backs and can force pennington to throw 30 times a game. Also if Clemens had a legitamate shot at starting or playing this year, then you better have a real workhorse which is why Id rather get a back from FA. I don't think having possibly Clemens and a rookie RB with a 2 year line will take us to the SB. (Unless Lynch falls to us)
Which back carries NE's load? They do not have one. Chicago even does 2 backs, probably 70/30 Jones/Benson. Even Deuce doesn't carry the load. I agree in part with JoeWillie. Portis may be 25, BUT he has a ton of miles on him. I'd go for Turner though..
I agree with you. It would be nice to use one of our second round picks for more of a road grater back. Somebody who is about 235 to 250 and can punish who ever tries to tackle him. We need a guy who after he gets hit carries people for another 3 to 5 yards fairly consistently. I think the Jets could really benefit from a Beattis type of running back. Leon can be the speed guy. If we upgrade in the O-line and as you said address CB and NT, I think we will be a force next year. We will need it. We have a very tough division, which accounts for 6 games, and I really think the challenge will exist almost every week. I really don't believe in easy schedule or hard schedule. I just think you always have to give it 110%, and have great execution. That usualy always makes the difference no matter who you play.
