I wasn't surprised when Brian Schottenheimer pulled his name out of the running for the Dolphin's head coaching job. As soon as I heard that the Chargers were keeping Marty Schottenheimer for one year, with no extension, myy thought was that the Fins would tab Cam Cameraon (who would have been the Chargers' Head Coach if they had fired Marty) and then the Chargers will make Brian Scottenheimer Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator. That puts him with his dad for one year, and in line to replace him as HC of the Chargers in 2008.
He said he's "committed to the NY Jets". If he then goes to the Chargers, it makes him look really bad IMO.
Plus he is under contract with the Jets. I believe the league no longer considers "Assistant HC/O-Coordinator" a promotion over "O-Coordinator". I'm not sure but I thought I remember reading something that they were trying to do away with this loophole that allowed many coaches to jump ship in the middle of their contracts for nothing more than title name changes. I could be full of sh*t though, I'll try to find it....
Um no, there is no way that he goes to be the O coordinator for the bolts. 1) It would cost them a draft pick 2) the gm cant stand his father, why would he want two shotty's on payroll?
nope, there aren't draft picks for coaches anymore, thanks to the Jon Gruden trade. point 2, though, is probable. plus, how eager would Brian be to coach the Charagers after his father is essentially run right out of town. this is just specious conspiracy nonsense contrived by people who do not know the NFL rules.
-If you were Shotty, would you want to work for your old man, making for an awkwark blurring of the line between family and employee? -If you were San Diego management, would you want your O-Coordinator to be the son of the head coach, which may cloud the coache's objectivity? I suspect Shotty want's to blaze his own trail and start a new Shottenheimer legacy, versus the old Marty legacy which is getting damaged more each year that his playoff futility continues...
hes the OC here....he cant move to OC anywhere else without the jets saying another team can talk to him. it would be stupid for the FO to let our OC move to another team to take up the same position. i doubt you will be seeing that play out at all...
one that doesnt include being referred to as a choker, or a loser when it counts!!!! hip-hip---MARTAAAAAAAY
I would suspect that if Schotty wanted to work for his father, than Mangini and the Jets would not stand in his way - and would release him. True about AJ Smith not liking his father, but if he could help his dad win a Super Bowl he'd be in position to succeed him as HC. No conspiracy theories, just a thought...
Schotty is staying here. He recognizes that this is the place for him to hone his craft under an organized and methodical regime. With Mangini and Tanny looking better and better by the days, so to will Shottenheimer. I firmly believe this team will continue to improve, and the offense is a part of that. Shotty will get his credit and eventually barring a complete albatross with the team, or bitter disagreement with Mangini leading to his dismissal, Brian will find himself a head coaching job in this league.
Behind the scenes, I think Schottenheimer quietly got a nice raise in return for his assurance that he'll stay at least one more year. It just hasn't made the newswires yet.
Schotty SR was lucky he didn't get fired this year, and in fact turned down an extension. How would his son feel about replacing him, especially given the contentious relationship between Schott SR and the SD front office? Can't see it myself.
The Jets wouldn't let him go because it would be considered a lateral move for his career. Now, if the Bolts fired his dad and were interested in Brian for the HC job they we'd have a discussion.
