“We’re playing,” coach Aaron Glenn said Thursday after the team’s final full practice before the game against the Packers. “I can’t tell you how much guys are going to play. That’s going to be affected by how the game goes, but we’re playing.” “Because I want to play,” Glenn said when asked for his reasoning to play the starters. “That’s the reason. I want our guys to play. That’s the reason.” I’m indifferent at times about if guys really need to play in preseason since there are varying results but this pumps me up. Coach Glenn loves ball and is coaching to inspire everyone on the roster to love ball.
I am not indifferent actually. I want players to use preseason games to get in game shape. Sooner you get hit the better.
I’m ok with a series or two but I am firmly in the Let’s not have the Starters play much in preseason camp Already saw the Colts’ Richardson have some kind of finger injury …. Don’t know the seriousness of it…one of the Ravens’ rookie CBs tore his knee up today and will miss his rookie season. Not good…I get the desire to have them get some game action, but to me, it’s just not worth the risk. Too much risk in a meaningless game…win or lose the games mean absolutely nothing… So to me, I would limit key players time as much as possible…especially when we have a pretty thin roster already.
I like this. Our team is young enough and the stakes are low enough this season where playing starters a good amount in the preseason offers a good risk/reward.
have to get live reps to be ready for the season. otherwise you are still working thru things the first few weeks, moreso than you already will be. the season is too long and in reality the first few weeks are now about figuring it out and getting your feet under you but when you have a team that may be within a few games of a playoff spot you dont want to waste any weeks. when you have a team that needs to gel you dont have the same ability to not play that some teams do. i think this is a good idea and guys will get hurt playing football.
You are one of the most level headed posters here so I am replying to you for the sole purpose of understanding your thought process. So please read below in that sense. Now changing the tone. Say a few injuries happen during preseason. Sucks for the players but what will the Jets lose exactly? We are not winning anything this year. So what are we risking exactly? Preseason games don't mean anything but this year regular season games don't mean anything either. It is a culture change. I like it. Get in game shape during camp. You get injured? Sucks. Next man up. No more beach club environment please. These guys are paid to hit and get hit. Let them earn their paycheck.
Did Aaron Glenn make his first mistake as NY Jets coach? "Aaron Glenn and the New York Jets' coaching staff may have just committed their first big blunder since taking over......" I'm not sure whether this is a good idea or not. I see both sides of it. Maybe the starters will play for a quarter and then rest. Isn't that typical anyway? Read the article.
If the Bengals can play Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase that much, we can play our starters. Whether or not this piece was at all implicated, clearly something did not work preparation-wise with this team so I'm glad to see some different strategies being implemented
It may not be the wisest move by the coaching staff; however, I may watch this preseason game to see what we have.
Beyond Cinci, the Raiders, Seattle, as will the Chiefs and other. Just vanilla get in real football rhythm typeof stuff. e desperately need that more than most.
I read it - more whining from Faria. It's amazing how the guy can be so wishy washy (in his text) and overly dramatic (in his headlines) at the same time. Yeah, it's the preseason - it is intended for the team to get ready for the games that count. Recent history shows that the Jets have ignored that opportunity - the results speak for themselves. It's football; guys get hurt and if they get hurt in the preseason or on the third play of the regular season doesn't matter much. On the other hand introduction to full team, full speed, full contact should never be relegated to once the games that count begin. The only way to be ready is to start early.
Yeah I get that for sure…we are probably not a playoff team even with everyone fully healthy…I think our roster is very thin across the board. So I get that and I’m not opposed to having the guys play some … but I am very much opposed to having key starters play more than a couple of series. Realistically, who can we not afford to lose? I’d say GW, Sauce, Q, McD, Olu, Membou…maybe that’s it? Because if any of those guys go down, those position groups are fucked. Our receiver group even with GW is one of the worst in the league…without him it’s abysmal. If we lose either of our tackles, we are looking at Warren Carter or Max starting at tackle. Without Q or McD, we have zero pass rush and it’s going to be hard stopping the run as is, let alone with no Q. Our corners outside of Sauce are not top tier guys. So right, while we are not a playoff team even with those guys, I’d just hate to see any of them go down for any amount of time on a stupid preseason game. Next Man Up is a nice slogan, but when your next man sucks balls, it doesn’t lead to winning. And we’re going to have a hard enough time winning with our starters I think. But that’s just me…I get the other opinions out there and that’s fine, but if it’s my call, I’m not letting any of those guys I mentioned play more than a handful of series across the three games.
Another say nothing article by Faria, stating an opinion with no backing and couching it as a fact. the only reckless part is having to read his piss poor article. Reckless is actually the opposite, starting the season unprepared because they did not face any competition, they did not tackle and did not play physical and did not play as a team against real opponents. How did that work for us in past years? Utter rubbish piece to get clicks.
if the jets were contenders sure. but they're not. theyre a young team with a new culture and system. they should play a decent bit.
Yeah I know…I get we’re not contenders, and I get we are trying to establish a new culture of toughness and all that. I get it. Seems like most posters here are in favor of starters playing a bunch…like I’ve said, I’m ok with them playing a few series, but I still don’t want to see key guys playing a lot. It’s fine by me if most posters disagree with me…but my opinion hasn’t changed. I get that we are not contenders, but I don’t have a big need to see a lot of action from guys like GW, Sauce, Olu, Membou, McD, Q Those are the main guys that I think are going to be critical this year and we have literally NO viable backups for them. If ANY of those guys get hurt, we are fucked. Not worth the chance to me…to me, the reward is definitely not worth the risk. But again, I’m fine with everyone else disagreeing with me…
