Sentimental feelings aside for Gunner, What is your opinion of Boomer Esiason's time as a New York Jet?
I voted unfavorable. He wasn't bad, I guess, but overall I was disappointed in his time here. The end of the 1993 season when we were 8-5, we needed (and Bruce Coslet needed) him to be the great QB as advertised and he came up very small. Same thing happened after the fake spike in 1994 when we were still 6-6 and in the hunt. I can't fault him too much for 1995.
I voted favorable, he was the QB when I really started getting into the Jets...and he is still a Jets homer on The NFL Today.
You know, that's a good point! It amazes me how much the guy LOVES the Jets considering how little time he spent here.
I had to go with favorable...he was the victim of soicumstance in the form of three coaches in three years, the last coach being Rich Kotite. 1993: Seemingly a marriage made in heaven to be reunited with Coslet...but why didn't Coslet install the no-huddle that Boomer excelled at in CIN? And why no shotgun formation (main reason why we got killed in HOU)? 1994: Dick Steinberg forces Pete Carroll to hire an outside OC...which turns out to be Ray Sherman...who goes on to attempt to install the WC offense on a team not biult for it. 1995: Rich Kotite doesn't like Boomer, so he tries to get him killed by starting G Evertett McIver vs. Bruce Smith. Kotite fails, but he at least got to showcase Bubby Brister's shovel passing abilities for a few weeks and to almost end Glenn Foley's career four years early as well... Boomer was the most stable factor on the team during some of its worst times.
Boomer sucks. That collapse in Pete Carrol's season doomed him, not to mention that Coslet threw Kenny O under the bus for him. Thumbs way down. No good memories associated with him at all.
Coslet threw O'Brien under the bus for Nagle (please, don't bother, Junc, its just my opinion  ) Boomer had nothing to do with it. I see Boomer as a guy who, like Ronnie Lott, Dexter Carter, etc, came in here as members of winning organizations and just couldn't change the culture by themselves with no committment from higher up. He did try, though. And got run over for it (Everett McKiver via Bruce Smith, ouch!)
I voted unfavorable... maybe he's a victim of the era... but to me his reign was unfavorable none the same
If you scroll up above that post, champ, you will see people discussing why he's a Jet homer on TV despite only being here for 3 unsuccessful years. That was my take on possibly why, because he's from Long Island, typically Jet country.
I voted favorable, as I don't tend to blame him for the incompetence of the players and coaches around him. One strange bit of trivia about Boomer is that is he was elected to the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame, despite the fact that he was born in West Islip and grew up in East Islip, both of which are in Suffolk County.
Ugh...unfavorable!!!! What a letdown Boomer was IMHO. You do realize the Marino spike never happens if Boomer just converts a couple more first downs in the second half of that game. He also threw a big pick. Please also remember that he threw the pick that Eric Allen turned into a highlight reel play in 1993. A pick in the red zone that had the Jets scored, would have put the game away. A win that would have earned them a playoff berth that season. Boomer was good, but I expected so much more. I don't count the 1995 season with Kotite. I feel bad that his brains were scrambled by Bruce Smith.
I gave him a favorable but wish there was a "meh" choice for this poll. I think that he was brought in for Coslet but by that time the O-line was finally showing some age. He had Rob Moore as his main weapon and Boomer made him look real good. Good enought that that the Cards threw tons of money his way with a small return. Once Kotite came in it didnt matter who the QB was, they were doomed to fail.
