Stud(s) = The Jets rag tag receiving corps put out a fairly heroic effort. Isiah Williams, Tyler Johnson, Arian Smith and Mason Taylor all had some atta boy moments. Dud = Bengals defense. I wouldn't want to be the guy who had to go to work today and answer for that performance.
You got that right. To let an offense, like ours, roll up over 500 yds. is inexcusable. As much as I love the win, the Jets had no business winning that game. Their asses were cooked by half-time. Damn, could you imagine this board if the role were reversed? TheGangGreen.com might just melt the internet. Studs = Hall, obviously, but I'm also going to give Mason Taylor a shout. That catch, from Hall, was the kind of thing this team needs! Folks, I think we finally have our TE! Duds = Tackling. I swear to all that's holy, if whatever shithole scouting dept. this team has can't figure out a way to find players that actually KNOW HOW to tackle they should all be fired and barred from working anywhere near a football program all the way down to Pop Warner!! I'm sick of watching our local High School team have 1000% better tackling than the professional team I root for!
I'll put a "stud" in for Justin Fields This was another game I was going to turn off at halftime, yes he was a "dud" in the first half. I decided to tune in for the 4th quarter and wow where did this guy come from. This was the QB we all hoped he would be. Also "stud" for the OL which gave Fields important time to throw.
The CB trio needs to be on here. This should have been a disaster by all accounts. Higgins had one catch, despite it being a massive one. Chase had a bunch of receptions for under 100 yards after annihilating the Steelers 10 days earlier. They torched us on the ground but how much of that is how we played the pass vs. how badly they saw us play the run? Stephens has turned it around for the most part, Brownlee was a homerun pickup and Thomas very much looks the part.
I've been saying it all year--Sherwood is too small to play MLB in NFL. He never fills the hole at the line of scrimmage, he tackles guys when they reach the secondary. I think he could be better hidden in a 3-4 defense where there are two ILB. I wish the jets would go to 3-4 next season--what have they got to lose--they just gave up 38 points?
Yeah, you're right, the jets current 4-3 is working great. Giving up 38 points to the bengals, 30 to the bills, 37 to the cowboys, 32 to the steelers, 29 to the bucs, etc. Why make a change?
Making a change doesn’t mean that Sherwood or any undersized linebacker is a better fit for a 3-4. You’re turning Q into a wasted 2-gap blocker occupier, reducing Jermaine Johnson’s best trait which is his get off out of a 4-point stance and putting two undersized inside linebackers in a position where they’re going have to take on guards since you do not have a true nose tackle. So yeah, change for the sake of change doesn’t always work.
There's a dozen 4 man fronts they could try. The HC/DC vibe with this crew is weird, rigid in all the wrong ways. Sherwood needs to play safety. He was a victim of a poorly executed system. They were dumb to re-sign him as a LB.
He’s probably best suited to be a weakside linebacker in a 4-3 cover 2 or cover 3 scheme since he’s bulked up too much to play safety. Cover the deep curl/hook area in zone coverage, chase plays down from the backside, let the end jump inside while he plays contain if he’s play side. His instincts are to run horizontally and around blockers rather than beat them to the spot with the correct shoulder and hold his ground. They paid him like an elite sideline to sideline backer. It’s a shame because if they were disciplined about it there are some really good tone setting free agent ILB’s available this offseason.
Stud: Aaron Glenn. He overcame the temptation to run the entire sideline like a raped ape when Breece tossed that one hitter to Mason!
