resemble him how??? you are making no sense. First you said he has "0 ability to pass", talking about a guy who literally just threw for 370+ yards and 2 touchdowns in a game a week and a half ago... Now you are saying 0 guys that resemble him have success. Skillset? I can name multiple. Experience? 2 year starter in the freaking SEC? actually there's plenty...
What about Jayden Maiava? I know we haven’t had much luck with USC QBs, but could be a good fall back option
Every single D1 QB has a good game here and there. It's about doing it consistently. This is like when Darnold or Wilson would occasionally have a good game and people would act like it was justification for keeping them. "He's shown flashes!" By "resemble him" I meant resemble him as a prospect. Allen is the only one and again, he's such an exception to the rule that I think the comp is meaningless. If you want to make an argument that he should stay in school and will improve drastically next year, sure, but using a first round pick on him this year requires a degree of speculation I want no part of.
As a prospect Allen played at Wyoming, Sellers is far more tested. I think skillset wise Daunte Culpepper resembles him closer than Allen as a prospect. But he played at UCF so he had easier schedules too. Daunte Culpepper was a successful professional. others resembling him that found success include Jalen Hurts and Ben Roethlisberger. Your statement of 0 players finding success like him is and was completely false — As far as your “good game here and there” stuff, you are the one that said he has shown 0 ability to pass. A good game here and there is more than 0, go figure
Not for anything but Jayden Daniels played a lot of shitty football (at least on the stat sheet) before he got to LSU and then exploded when he got paired up with two top 15 picks at receiver and a 2nd round tightend. Obviously he has the one great year. And you’re buying Sellers on a lot of projection but I tend to completely believe if he goes to Alabama, Miami, Southern Cal, Oregon, etc. in the transfer portal this offseason, he ends up in NY for the Heisman ceremony next year. So if he declares you’re buying low on that projection.
The Sellers discussion might have to wait a year anyways. South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers nearing deal to return to Gamecocks for 2026 season https://www.cbssports.com/college-f...ellers-gamecocks-2026-season-transfer-portal/
Probably not but he’s a unique cat I think. He can probably get the same bag or greater at another university that’ll position him better for the NFL. So I have a hard time believing his draft stock weighed a ton into it. He must love SC.
You gotta respect the hell out of Sellers. He’s the man for this, local boy staying with his school. (If the report is true)
As expected - he is out of the draft. Smart decision, he wasn't a lock even for the end of 1st after the season he had. Next year he can improve his stock. Hopefully Mendoza, Moore, and Simpson will declare. Btw, also as expected Mendoza won Heisman.
You never know how these guys think. With NIL even the end of the 1st round is not an easy call. Sellers is very popular name. He is making 4 mil now and can make more than that next season. End of 1st round is 4 mil AAV. Of course you get 4 years and 16 mil guaranteed, which is better than 1 year and say 6 mil, but still, NIL makes it very attractive to stay. If you are top 10-15, it's a no brainer, but end of 1st and also not a lock for that, NIL can make a huge difference. But, we can stop talking about him for now. It's Mendoza, Moore, and Simpson in 2026. For now...
I’m such a huge fan of his, I think he’s going to become a star in the NFL when his time comes, and I believe he’ll become a great passer over time the way McNair did.
I didn’t know much about Mendoza as a person until recently, his game reminds me of Pennington (for better and worse). But I just saw a reel with a letter from his mom to him, it fucking had me crying it was so moving. There’s no doubt at all of Mendoza’s character and ability to handle adversity, I think he would thrive in NY.
Yeah, the dorkiness can be extreme but Mendoza seems like a very good dude overall. Smart, conscientious, thoughtful. Most QB prospects fail. It's just a very hard position to play well. Mendoza has all the qualities of a high floor guy though, and I think his ceiling gets underrated due to lack of athleticism. QBs need to be good at passing above all else. Athleticism is mostly a benefit insofar as it allows a QB to pass more effectively. You don't need to be hyper mobile if you're tall and have good pocket presence. The best QB of all time was completely in the Mendoza mold.
I agree. When you watch him, he doesn't blow you away with physical talent. But there is definitely an "IT" factor with Mendoza. He was extremely clutch in their 3 biggest games this year - Oregon, Penn State and OSU.
I would trade up and draft Mendoza at the right price. I dont think his personality is a big deal. He actually has a fire under him. Also at the end of the day who cares? We drafted a bunch of QBs who were timid/stoic and they were unable to handle it. At the end of the day it comes down to winning/loser and at the very least you can say he wants to win. Our past picks never cared as much as he does and now thats a bad thing? The Jets have had no personality/identity or main character type of person since Rex Ryan was here. Mendoza would be the face of the team and would want that role.
I've seen some crazy trade-up scenarios involving both of this year's firsts, a first next year and MORE. That is way too much, IMO when next year's QB class appears to be much deeper.
The issue with that is lets say the Jets dont draft a QB this year. Then in year 3 they start with a new QB and lose, then what? Glenn is getting fired. They cant go 3 years of losing, it wont be accepted. The regime has to find a QB in year two. Also another thing to consider is this. Lets say the Jets drafted Mendoza and he flat out sucked and the Jets got 3-14 next year. Well they can draft a QB again. Of course you wouldnt want to keep throwing darts but at this point for the franchise who really cares? Everything else has failed the last 15 years. Obviously im not saying I would want to see that or believe that will be the result but even if it did happen the Jets can just try again anyways. There is no rule saying they cant.
If Mougey wants to trade up, the biggest risk for us is a team that won't want to trade the pick getting the first overall pick. Need the Titans/Giants to lose out or the Raiders to win one. We'd currently have the 2nd overall pick behind the Giants if we hadn't beaten the Browns. Boggles my mind how anyone ever defends these worthless wins in the name of "culture."
