the jets have the worse rb talent in the afc east, but it seems noone thinks about it quite that way.lets look at the rest of the afc east rb's maroney mcgahee brown.... all 1st rd picks...and if not for injury mcgahee would have been a much higher pick..maybe top ten... i think it's safe to say that the jets are at a disadvantage against all of their afc east rivals in terms of talent from the rb position..i think it's also safe to think that at least 2 teams(pats, mia) wil get significantly better with their rb's coming into their own next yr....that coupled with the fact that the jets have the only starting qb in the league that cannot keep defenses honest by throwing the 12 yrd out and you have a sad situation....the jets need a major upgrade at rb and upgrades along the o-line to specifically to address the running game.no more of this nonsense abot having the personnel to "get the job done".that's no longer good enough to improve upon what happened last yr..it's time to attack the problem in the exact way the o-line situation was dealt with last yr.get the best you can find, and coach the hell out of them.bring in at least TWO blue chip prospects to help with the running game because it's NECESSARY in order to keep up with with the rest of the afc east..
i have nothing wrong with leon washington and cedric houston running the ball for the jets next season. sure we can draft a RB somewhere in the draft but i really feel good about leon. and improve our Oline?!? how about the front 7 on defense first. our Oline was pretty good last year but the run defense was etrocious. we need to improve our Dline before our Oline
I don't understand how you can bare to watch Cedric Houston next year. Especially coming off years of watching Curtis Martin. Houston is so dreadful when it comes to moving the chains. Washington I can stand as a 3rd down back. Houston is awful though.
u really think so?? i say give him another shot. if he sucks at the beginning of the season then i agree that the jets shouldnt use him often or even at all. i mean we can still pick up another RB in the draft or from FA but keeping him wouldnt do anyone any harm either for the time being
Leon is nothing more than, and never will be anything more than a Flanker, we need a solid Half Back, and HELL NO Ced isn't it, that's why I say we should sign, trade for, or draft one, as many of you know I am a fan of Michael Bush, If we don't get him, we should get Ahman Green, or trade for Thomas Jones
Houston had his chance to shine in his rookie season when he took over for Curtis Martin late in 2005, then he had a chance to prove himself in 2006 season and wasn't that impressive. Can't keep holding onto guys who don't produce. He's a career #3. I don't want any part of him.
i dont think we have a great situation...and i think we are 4th in the division, but i only think the patriots are set...the other two each have problems/?'s(just not as severe) buffalo-mcgahee has looked terrible/average the past two seasons against everyone but us miami- ronnie brown looks average and hasnt played nearly at the level of ricky williams...who if came back would actually be a huge boost as for us- houston is terrible and i'd like to see us draft and sign a vet. tony hunt and FA adrian peterson could give us a much better situation ....but if you look at the nfc west(which is one of the flat out worst in football....aka playing in the nfc) they have 4 amazing rbs s. alexander/s. jackson/f. gore/e. james
Very right...Houston has not produced nearly to the level we need. Neon leon though is more than just a third down back, he has the ability to cut around the field. However, we could probly grab a back for him to share the load off of free-agency with the money we'd save cutting houston. BTW, are is the jury out that Brown is a "great back"?
What the hell are you talking about? McGahee and Ronnie Brown both had lukeworm seasons at best last year. And the Pats went with a RB-by-committee that didn't rack up a ton of yards either.
It is not about yards as much as getting key first downs or touchdowns in short yardage situations. What would be your call with Ced/Leon on 3rd and 2 pass or run, how about with Dillon Maroney?
how much money are we gonna save by cutting houston a 6th round draft pick about $50,000. wow maybe we can go after tomlinson with that money. i dont know why everyone wants us to stick with what we have at rb. leon washington wont and never will be a 1000 yr. rusher in this league. a good 3rd down back however he will be. obtaining a rb is a must.
I'll concede that Dillon/Maroney was a force to be reckoned with this last season (although it was really just Maroney I was worried about). But that was mostly a product of the Pats' excellent O-line. I still stand by my statement that McGahee and Ronnie Brown had mediocre (or worse) seasons.
The Jets are 4th in the division in terms of RB talent at this point. The only team ahead of them for which the distinction is relevant is New England, because the Bills and Dolphins both have a lot of other questions to answer before the strength of their running game becomes a key factor in their championship chances. The real question if you want to look at the AFC East's rushing attacks and how they impact the divisional and championship races is which teams are ahead or gaining rapidly on the offensive line? Again the leader is New England but in this race the Jets are rapidly outpacing their other two opponents and actually gaining ground on the Patriots. One more good offensive lineman, at RG, RT or even a star at LG could move the Jets offensive line to the front of the pack and the rushing attack usually follows.
The Jets really aren't in position to draft a round 1 back at this point, we're better off acquiring a back in FA or trade.
i still disagree..cedric was injured last year if i remember correctly, and the jets were opperating under a new system and pennington was getting back in the mix of things and fine, lets draft a RB but cedric houston and leon are worth keeping. if the jets released houston how much money would they be saving?? a couple thousand..his salary isnt high so i really dont see what is so bad with keeping him. i say let him have another chance in preseason and then take it from there. it wont hurt anyone
Can't really agree. The two times that Leon was given 20 carries last season he got 100 yards. He singlehandedly won the Miami game. He was getting into a rhythym against NE just before the stupid Chad lateral. Leon did slow a bit towards the end of the season, but before he hit the rookie wall he showed the ability to run between the tackles as well as outside and draws. We are lacking in run blocking and FB, not so much at RB. I think Cedric can be a good counterpoint to Leon, but I am not opposed to drafting Leonard as a combo FB/RB to compliment Leon.
Don't forget that when he took over we had a makeshift OL, VT or Bollinger as our QB, and pretty much no passing game. Nobody could do much behind that. CMart has a rough start because people didn't respect Chad's arm and had 8-9 guys in the box, what makes you think a rookie could do much better without Chad, without a healthy OL, and when he was just getting into proper shape after they figured out his fatigue issue had to do with his metabolism. Last year he started off pretty well and then got hurt and with the rotation system never truly got a full season under him. Personally I think he and Leon will make a nice duo and compliment each other quite well. That's not saying the position can't be upgraded but Houston to me has some potential and could surprise some people if he gets enough touches.
Right on. Show me a team with a damned good O-line and I'll show you a team that runs the ball well. We'll pick up a RB somewhere, I still think we need to finish what we started on the O'line and get us a legitimate NT on Def (not necessarily in that order). Then continue building out from there.
You have to remember that Houston was still recovering from that thyroid condition his rookie year. He was overwieght and out of shape as a result. That condition can take six months to get the meds right, and only then could he work on getting back into playing shape. What I liked last year was how he kept his legs churning, getting every inch possible out of every run. Let's face it, last year's O line never opened any holes big enough for an RB to get through the LoS without getting hit. That's why Leon's big plays all came on dump offs, where he could get some space to run in. Heck, Barlow put up better numbers at SF behind that lousy O line than he did here. This O line SUCKS at run blocking. I mean, maybe only the Raiders are worse. Slight exageration, but not ridiculously so. That's why we only rushed the ball like 12 times against NE in the playoffs. Most of those weren't up the gut, so Leon was the better choice to get the carries. Given a choice, get me a RG and RT that can open some holes, and then judge Leon and Cedric.
Tangini and company haven't made too many mistakes but banking on a30+ years old RB with a ton of carries under his belt and a knee injury coming back was jus plain stupid. The trade for Barlow was a panic from resulting directly from the stupidity. I remember during last year draft when Bush trade were heating up, posters saying that we didn't have enough talent on our roster to give away picks. IMO we gave away 2 1st day picks last year w/ our 3rd round reaches and now we just gave away a 4th round pick. I'm going to mark them off as rookie mistakes that hopefully they learn from.
