No doubt he got cut for salary cap reasons, not because he isn't productive, he will get a big deal from someone.

If hes worth top dollar then that would mean hes a top player in this league. now ask yourself this. Is a team going to cut a top player in this league just because of salary cap reasons.

Just because a guy has a big mouth doesn't automatically mean he's not a mangini guy....look at a guy like meshawn johnson. Big mouth, but plays hard and fearless and was a parcells favorite. Coles has a big mouth and Mangini loves his toughness and heart. I think Porter would fit in with the team...

Happens all the time, if you think you can get Joey Porter cheap you are mistaken.

Joey Porter is one of the most overrated pass rushers in the league. Is he a good outside linebacker? YES. But he does not shoot the edge, he is a product of Dick Lebeau's extreme blitz schemes, in that he knows how to find holes. The Steelers are so successful because of their blitz packages. Lebeau wouldn't be blitzing every down if he had an edge rusher like people make Porter out to be.

No doubt this opens one of two doors for us.. The way I see it, the 49ers and Jets are the two teams in the running for an elite OLB.... There was one on the market, now there are two.... If the 49ers outbid us for Thomas, Porter is available. If the 49ers change their tune and go after porter, Thomas is waiting in the wings. Good situation for us.... Fingers crossed for one of them!

out of everyone on the board who thinks we should sign him, you have to be the one who doesn't....

Exactly, puts us in a good position. But, I think there are a few more teams looking for the same thing. So our competition might be alittle more steep than we think.

I think we go with Porter instead. For one, he may come cheaper than Thomas. Second, Thomas has never been THE man in Baltimore, and Porter is the voice of the Steeler defense. Having said that, that's what we need out there. Just like when we got Bryan Cox in a similar situation, he was the leader of that defense, the face! I love Vilma, but he's a quiet guy on the field, we need someone like this to juice the other guys up. As for Thomas, he is on the upside, and might have a better outside rush than Porter; I'll give him that. Personally, given the pros/cons I put together for myself...bring in Porter!

Here it is. Sign Porter. Trade 1st pick for Turner. Draft a CB second pick. Draft Leonard with the 3rd pick. Great offseason. Last year they solidified their offensive line. This year the focus will be on defense and the run game. GOOD OFFENSIVE LINE AND RUN GAME + SOLID DEFENSE = playoffs. It would be 2 succesful years of drafting in a row, something Jets fans haven't ever seen. Of course Leonard will be told to put 15 pounds on and he will be the best running and catching fullback in the NFL in a couple years with an instant impact in his rookie season. Make the move Mangini, give the Jets fans something to be happy about.

By the way, major props for signing Cotchery to an extension...BIG move

I don't understand the fascination with Porter. Yes, he would be an upgrade over Hobson, but much more expensive. He isn't an elite OLB anymore and his antics and mouth are annoying to say the least.

He is older than A.Thomas with a lot more miles as Thomas wasn't a full-time starter his entire career. I am not sure what Porter's contract demands will be, but I would not enjoy rooting for that guy at all.

As for the "leadership" angle...being loud doesn't make you a leader.

Exactly! I remember when Parcells was just molding this defense and we had just begun to get some respect. What we needed back then, and now, is someone who not only talks the talk, but HAS walked the walk.

We need to get past the big mouth thing that's haunted this team since Keyshawn. Porter, if nothing else, just might have a positive effect on guys like Hobson and Vilma. If nothing else, he'll give them both attitude. Just like Cox did back in the day..

absolutely! I 100% agree! We do need some "edge" to our defense, and Porter is just the guy to give that to us.

    I'm with Leberfeld

By the way, Thomas is only 3 months younger than Porter. Porter has more mileage though.

Leberfeld used to be a decent reporter. He's gone crazy ever since Herm left, though. From campaigning for Brooks Bollinger to be the starter, to wanting Tice over Mangini, killed Tannenbaum for releasing Norm Katnik, Trevor Johnson, and Ryan Myers, wanted Mathias Kiwanuka over Mangold despite the fact that Kiwi would be horrible in the 3-4... and there's probably some other things I'm forgetting. If the Jets don't sign Porter, or don't show much interest in signing him... he might go bat shit crazy.

    The man is a loser.

Porter would be a great fit--but I have a bad feeling the Pats will sign him
