seeing the initial flurry of moves yesterday while the jets keep cutting some dead wood off the roster is definitely a bit curious to me.....

i understand the size of these contracts but just remember that todays overspending will look like bargains in 2 years or so.

i would have liked for them to ink a lineman like steinbach or even dockery yesterday. just to take a little heat off draft day so the focus can be on the skill spots. oh well there are still some second tier guys out there so....... but the point is the pats and even the bills improved there teams yesterday by addition and subtraction.

especially the pats - and they also have 2 1st rounders this year, geez.....

IMO - the moves of the pats are putting some heat on the jets regardless of the plans on the board at hofstra. they need to make a decision as to what unit gets special attention from today onward. unfortunately i am now swinging to the offense cause the pats defense just got a whole notch better.

with CP as our qb my wish would be to build a stellar defense and support CP with a decent running game - a combination that CAN get you success in january. however, i do not see the jets having the resources to build that stellar defense while CP is the qb so it may be time to get the offensive weapons instead.....

IMO, we cannot ride CP to the superbowl so we have to get somebody we can.

peterson, johnson, olsen.... the offensive studs in this draft may well be worth the expense - so that the pats have to worry about that one guy on our offense - for once.

The only way to compete with the Pats is to develop enough talent in the trenches to win the muscle games that the Jets have been losing regularly since 2003.

Since NFL teams understand what the value of the trench guys is it's virtually impossible to sign these guys at affordable prices in free agency.

The way you get them is via the draft.

Look at the Pat's offensive line. Where did it come from?

From left to right: Matt Light (1st Rd 2001), Logan Mankins (1st Rd 2005), Dan Koppen (5th Rd 2003), Stephen Neal (undrafted free agent), Nick Kaczur (3rd Rd 2005)

Look at the Pat's defensive line. Where did it come from?

From left to right: Ty Warren (1st Rd 2003), Vince Wilfork (1st Rd 2004), Richard Seymour (1st Rd 2001)

Do we see what the Pats did here to get in such a dominating position? Is it so hard to understand?

Now look at the Jet's offensive line right now:

From left to right: D'Brick (1st Rd 2006), Kendall (free agent), Mangold (1st Rd 2006), Moore (undrafted free agent), vacancy.

Look at the Jet's defensive line right now:

From left to right: Ellis (1st Rd 2000), D-Rob (1st Rd 2003), vacancy.

The Jets have a lot of holes to fill before they catch the Pats and the draft is where they are going to have to do it.

Look again at what the Pats did to create the dominance on the lines. The Jets need to do that also or they will never catch up to them.

We are off on the right track though,I believe Nick Mangold will develop into a better player than Wilfork. If we have a centre that is capable of pushing around their nose tackle then that is half the battle.

I absolutely believe we're on the right track. We're just rounding the first turn though and we need to keep on pace with the plan to improve the lines before we start thinking about adding less essential pieces to the puzzle.

OH lordy that is a spot on post. That is the anatomy of how to build a good football team. Too bad all the aspiring GM's here can not, nor will not grasp this conncept.

Anyway the Jets are 1-2-3 years away from having this blue print as well. When that happens look out, we are going to be very very good. The Jets are on the correct path though.

The Patriots are the Patriots because 1 6th round draft pick turned out to be one of the best qb's to ever play the game....their lines have been better than ours, but a lot of teams in the NFL have similar fronts.........BB is a good coach, but what is his career record without Brady??? Something to think about....

I think that while I agree with your thought process comparing the Jets OL to the Pats is a bit unfair considering Herm and Bradway neglected it for 5 years. Parcells built a pretty solid OL and Herm and Bradway allowed it to crumble either by allowing guys to walk or not drafting guys. You have to do better than JP Machado if you want to build a winner and right now our lines are paying for mistakes made by the previous regime.

Absolutely. There's no question that neglect on the offensive line is where we are right now.

They did spend the picks on the defensive line though, trading away half our draft in 2003 to move up and take D-Rob. The killer though is that picking in our original 13 spot the Pats got Ty Warren.

It would be great if a young all-pro caliber right tackle was on the free agent market right now. Like Mawae, signing him would be a building block. There just isn't one out there.

It really is going to be a bit of a grind to get the lines to where they need to be and I hope the organization has the patience to see it through. You just don't ever get where you need to be if you try taking shortcuts.

Look at where the Dolphins are now after Saban cut the biggest corner of all last year and signed Culpepper instead of just trading up for Cutler or Leinart.

Mangold and D'Brick will be that much better this year after a full off season program, and obviously Mangini and Tann know the importance of the lines.....i am not concerned really with the O-line, but the D-Line may be a problem....

Actually it's far more likely that two years down the road these big contracts will be like an albatross around the neck.

Hold on there fella... The Pats got a pretty good LB, and downgraded at TE by losing Graham and bringing in Brady. The Bills lost just about every above average player they had and way overpaid for an OL. Now, the Pats having 2 1st round picks blows, but Bills seem to be trying to tank the 2007 season before it ever begins. They will, without a doubt, be the worst team in the NFL in 2007.

We have 4 picks on day one of the draft. If they get a RT, DT, DE, and OG with those picks I'll be doing backflips. We have enough "skill" players on both sides of the ball to get it done if the lines can improve just a little. Better run blocking and more pass rush would completely change the dimensions of the games we watched in 2006.

OK, the Bills overspent on average O-line guys, but all those guys are young and physical.

If anything, they actually upgraded their O-line, just not at the best possible price. McGahee now has an absolute road grader at G to run behind.

They did lose alot on defense though, but theres still alot of offseason left.

Don't underrate the Bills because they lost a bunch of names we know. Their offense should be upgraded, at the very least the running game is. They have alot of time to fix many holes on defense.

Garaunteeing first pick in the draft status to them? I can't see it.

Uhhh it's really not a stretch to think Mangold will be a better player as you make it seem......He may be the best young center in the league in 2 years.....He beat the crap out of Wilfork when we beat them in Foxboro during the regular season this year as well
