I'm not sure exactly what the Jets have in mind, but it seems likely that they will make a move of some sort for an impact starting linebacker between now and training camp. The Jets signings this offseason have largely been for decent journeyman defensive linemen (Kenyon Coleman, David Bowens) and filler depth (Andre Wadsworth.) They've also resigned Bobby Hamilton for depth. This is beginning to look very much like the Parcells plan, with a lot of competent defensive linemen rotating to stay fresh and keep people off of the linebackers. Under Parcells it was Ernie Logan and Rick Lyle and Anthony Pleasant and Bobby Hamilton who rotated at the ends, and sometimes in the middle, and set the table for Mo Lewis, Bryan Cox, Marvin Jones, James Farrior and Roman Phifer. The question is who are the Jets going to get to make a real impact in the middle of that defense? Parcells signed Cox and Phifer and drafted Farrior trying to find that hard hitter that would make all the work the journeymen were putting in on the line worth it.
Who can say for sure but if that was the case, why haven't seen any signs of the FO trying to make some moves to get Adalius Thomas? I'm more inclined to think that the Jets will draft at least one DE to be an OLB at some point down the road and one who could perhaps be both a 3-4 DE or LB. Tim Crowder and Alama-Francis are two prospects who come to mind.
At some point I think Mangini will probably realize we don't have anybody that fits the 3-4 at this point.
Briggs He's already come out publicly and stated he would never play in the 3 - 4. Also wants a monster deal which would kill our cap.
I think the Jets would have had some interest in Thomas if the Patriots didn't jump in quickly and grab him. I think they were not willing to get into a bidding war for Thomas because they recognized that cap room is much more valuable to the chaser than the chased in a talent war. If #2 ever gets squeezed for cap room then #1 has likely won the race by default. As it is the Pats got Thomas a bit cheaper than most people expected he would go, however he would not have been remotely that cheap for the Jets. Everybody knows he went to New England to get a ring and paid a price for that.
people keep saying that BOWENS is a 3-4 OLB. has he ever shown that he can play the run? He was paid a lot of money to join us. IMO he will be a DE for us unfortunalely on a part time situational basis!
You can't be serious... He's 270 pounds, he won't see DE in a 3-4 ever. He was an OLB in college, and in numerous articles it has been said he will more than likely play OLB for us.
Alama-Francis is better suited for 3-4 DE with his size, but I'm with you on Crowder. I'm really high on LaMarr Woodley; I would add him to that list. I think it's obvious that we're going to add another OLB in the first (Jarvis Moss/Anthony Spencer) or second (Woodley, Crowder, Brian Robison) rounds. Bowens is a nice player, but considering our lack of depth at OLB, I think it's a must in the first 2 rounds...especially with the bumper crop of 3-4 OLB prospects declaring this year.
Wow I didn't even think of him playing Linebacker, def have to think that should help him with his injury issues abit.
He is definately a 4-3 LB. He can probably play any LB position in the 4-3 in the pros. In my opinion he has a chance to go to either #24 to NE or #26 to Philly, but they just traded for Spikes.
I heard him in an interview with NFL Radio that the JETS worked him out twice. Although we have more pressing needs IMO, I would love to have this player on our team.
