ed blanton has the height and weight and quick feet to be a surprise in training camp.he has a good chance to replace clemens at right tackle.after a year in the weight room.he has improved ten fold.speaking to a friend who lives near hofstra university.said in conversations with people who know the jets players.say that blanton will be the dark horse for the jets offensive line at right tackle.I hope it is true, because that would be a key position to be filled.leaving the jets open to drafting a starting guard on the o.l.
Blanton was a solid starter for all four years (i believe) at Cal. Blanton had two major knocks on him coming out of Cal, which were that he relied to heavily on his size, neglecting technique, and strength, or lack there of. With a year in an NFL strength and conditioning program and a year working on hisa technique, he could possibly challenge at RT.
Clements was really really bad last year, when you consider Blantons potential and youth I'd imagine he has to be just alright to win the starting job.
God I hope your job doesn't require alot of writing... but yeah I hope he can be good, he is a monster...
someone has been posting about this for a while. maybe Thunderbird? i really hope Blanton has panned out and becomes the real deal. if so, and we fill RT going into the draft, this team will have a serious chance to improve by taking BPA -- chances are, that player will be an immediate impact player on D or even an Offensive threat, such as Teddy Ginn Jr. cheers
Blanton had a good preseason last year and came a LONG way from TC. We will see how much he progresses and if he has a shot at beating out Clement. W/ this CS, anything is possible
being that ed blanton is about 6'9" would that be a disadvantage for him being on the right side tackle specially since they want you to be faster and more agile.
Cal UCLA, same school different campus. ANyway, I know its UCLA, I do not know why I typed Cal. Originally Posted by tanknyc "being that ed blanton is about 6'9" would that be a disadvantage for him being on the right side tackle specially since they want you to be faster and more agile." No, Actually you want the Left Tackle to be more fast and agile, as they handle the speed rushing Right End, which generally comes from the QB's blind side (right handed QB's). You want a big mauler type at RT as the QB can see that side so giving up a little pass protection in exchange for better run blocking is not as big of a deal. Generally RT's are bigger and stronger.
yeah, i think i just had a brain-fart. that's why Brick projects so well at LT; he's strong, quick, and athletic to take on guys like Freeney. i guess Blanton has the right dimensions and attributes to be a solid RT. cheers
When it comes to an OT's height, it matters alittle less than so at Guard. The reason being is most De's are someone in the 6'5-6'7 range, and being 6'9 obviously doesn't create any real leverage mismatches. Also, at RT, athleticism and speed do not matter quite as much as they do at LT, b/c generally LE'S are run stuffers, and an RT's run blocking abilities are considered much more important than so pass protecting. Anytime you can add athleticism to really any position on the football field it's a good thing, but at RT, you can saccrifice some mobilty for strength/size.
Is that possible? He was on the PS last year (I believe) and was also added to the regular season roster towards the end. By addding him to the roster means to me that they see some worth in the guy, and I'm not so sure they'd be inclined to add him to the PS if the option was there.
I had mentioned Blanton as a dark horse for the RT spot, based on his promotion off the taxi squad for the playoff game against NE. Now, that promotion could be that they wanted to protect him, or that they threw him a bone for working so hard all year... either way, that means Blanton was in their plans last year. I also suspect that he may be a bigger part of the CS's plans, given how long they let Clement stay in the FA market as long as they did, but obviously, this is guesswork. I am hopeful he can be a guy that can generate some push on the O line, but pure speculation at this point. He is a road grader type.... that young man is Large. Before some knucklehead comes along and says that Blanton is this year's "darling" on the MB, just remember that many O linemen take time to develop.... and people have pointed out how the Falcon's O line is full of late round picks and undrafted linemen. They often take some time to develop, and Blanton's chances of being one of those offensive lineman that can become a starter is as good as any other late pick/FA pickup.
