I'm guessing this got overlooked with all of the coverage that the draft got. Basically, some NY assemblymen are sponsering a bill that will ban NY teams from using "NY" in their name if they don't actually play in NY. That is, if the bill gets passed, which seems unlikely IMO.... NY had a chance to take back the Jets with the WSS, but didn't want them. Let's go! NJ Jets baby! :breakdance:
Here's a link to the article itself: http://www.newsday.com/news/local/w...ory?coll=ny-region-apnewjersey&vote29403905=1
I'm not a lawyer, but this bill strikes me as blatantly unconstitutional. It's also ridiculously stupid, but that's another matter.
Actually, this is interesting. 10 years ago or so, NJ tried to get a bill through that said teams playing in NJ must use NJ in their name. I think it passed but was never enforced. The NJ bill was for teams receiving state money handouts. This is the mirror image to that bill. Not sure it could be enforced either.
I really hope not....i'm a long time NY JETS fan....too bad we couldnt get our own stadium......o'well
This is stupid.... A rule like this sets the precedent for other idiotic changes. The Irving Cowboys? The Foxborough Patriots? The Orchard Park Bills? The Landover Redskins? There are plenty of teams that don't play in the city for which they are named. It's just stupid to make it a legal issue. These teams are named for the city from which the majority of their fanbase is formed.
Everything you listed is at least partially caused by the name disparity among major sports franchises in the region. Having the New Jersey Jets in town will do a lot more than having the New York Jets. P.S. NY Legislature die die die die die.
The problem is the state, not the city. It is stupid, but it does kind of short-change the state who is footing all the money to have the team only to have another state have the name. Although I really don't consider East Rutherford a part of New Jersey. I try to disassociate myself with northeast New Jersey for the most part.
That's a redundant phrase, like "criminal lawyer" and "insurance fraud". My take--if you can see the city from the field, it's ok to call them New York. And I live in New Jersey.
LOL lets see what is an important must do item for politicians forget regular New Yorkers: 1.) Crime- nah nobody bothers me when legislation is in session 2.) Economy- Shit my job is secure and I have a great pension who cares about the econmy. 3.) Taxes- Nah they are high enough to pay my salary who cares. Maybe we can hike them later and I can get a raise. 4.) Employment- See #2 5.) Transportation- Nah I already get free Limo rides 6.) The New York Jets- Those rat bastards are in Jersey. Yes this is what all New Yorkers need a name change. OMG.
Who cares about the name weather its the New Jersey Jets, or the New York Jets they are still the Jets.....This guys clearly upset that both the Giants and the Jets moved to NJ. But thats NYC's fault . Both teams coulda built new stadiums in the 70's and 80's if the city was willing . Hell the NYC had a second chance with the WSS but look what happened . This guy's peers made their bed's now it's time they lay in it.... BTW isnt their more pressing matters this guy can try to tackle instead of Sports teams names? Couldnt they try to help he education systems ???
I mean would it make him feel any better if they were like the Angels and called them The New York Jets of East Rutherford New Jersey . would that make him feel better and stop whining !!!!
