I'm sure Klecko will win this unofficial poll, but I'll vote Gastineau. Anytime you can be on a list with these guys it's pretty impressive. Plus he was #1 for 18 years and would still be if not for that punk-a$$ Brett Favre.

    22.5 Michael Strahan NYG 2001
    22 Mark Gastineau NYJ 1984
    21 Reggie White Phi. 1987
    21 Chris Doleman Min. 1989
    20 1/2 Lawrence Taylor NYG 1986

Mo Lewis should get some mention as well as the obvious names of Klecko & Gastineau..

Yeah, even though Lewis inadvertantly made the Patriots the dynasty they are today with that wicked hit on Drew Bledsoe.

My first thought was Joe Klecko, but I'm not old enough to have seen the 1968 team. I understand they had terrific players on defense. Ronnie Lott did wear the uniform but he was way past his prime by then.

I agree. Everybody hated Gastineau including his team mates. He would show up every year to camp with his 3.5% body fat and his personal weight lifting machines. He was a scab during the strike and left the game at his peak to screw around with Stallone's ex wife or girfriend, whatever she was, to become a boxer. He was one dimensional but he was absolutely great at that one dimension.

Klecko on the other hand made all pro at 3 different positions which I think still has never been matched.

I am old enough to have seen the 1968 team, and they did have come great players on defense. Philbin, Elliott, Biggs, Grantham, and Atkinson were all excellent, with Philbin and Grantham particularly topnotch (as my sig says). Having said that, I would still go with Klecko.
