    Kendall might be unhappy camper

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Jets' mandatory minicamp that begins tomorrow at Hofstra figures to be a lot more compelling than usual with the expected arrival of disgruntled guard Pete Kendall.

The outspoken veteran, boycotting Eric Mangini's offseason program because he's unhappy with his contract, could create a circus-like atmosphere by voicing his displeasure - and he's never been shy about expressing opinions.

Kendall, an offensive co-captain, is seeking about a $1million raise on his $1.7 million salary. He averaged about $3 million a year in his first three seasons with the Jets and he's looking to maintain that level.

The Jets don't appear willing to budge because Kendall re-negotiated his contract last year (he's signed through 2009) and made $5.2 million in 2006. That's actually $300,000 more than he was previously due to earn, but he also agreed at the time to take a $3.3 million pay cut in 2007. Now, after a solid season, he'd like to recoup some of that money.

The staredown could last until the start of training camp in late July. The Jets may wind up releasing Kendall - he crossed Mangini by not showing up for voluntary workouts - but they appear intent on making him wait before granting his freedom.

In the meantime, Adrien Clarke, who started four games for the Eagles in 2005, has been practicing in Kendall's left guard spot.

is this Adrien Clarke guy any good? I've never heard of him, how'd we get him?

I think Kendall will arrive at camp ready to play, but keep his mouth shut for the most part. He's an intelligent and classy guy, he knows better than to cause a training-camp ruckus by mouthing off to the media about a new contract

Sure, he might be playing for a contract elsewhere this year, but hey, at least we know he'll be giving it his all

    Give Him His Money!!

  5. We should not give in on this demand. He is a rapidly depleting player, that aside from leadership is a liability along the line.

Let our young back-up players fight for the LG spot, creating competition, even more of a youth movement, a possible upgrade, and in the long run, save us alot of money!

If he didnt just sign his deal last year, I might side with him. He made $5.2 million last year and agreed to make $1.7 this year.

Do one or the other sign him or cut him. The last thing we want is a loose canon shooting his mouth off. It will just make a mockery of all the team building thats already been done.

I can see where both sides are coming from.. kendall agreed to take a cut, but then again contracts are never guaranteed so therefore its only fair that he has a chance to ask for more money now.

Kendall seems to be a "classy" guy.. but he's been mouthing off to the media for a while now..He's hasn't really completely bought into mangini and that can become a problem.

I saw we pay him for 2 reasons.. 1: we have the cap room and the cap will increase a TON next year. 2: Kendall has been good for us and has done everything asked of him. He's played center and provided versatility, and he's been a mauler at left guard. He's certainly on the downside of his career and can't compare to any top guards, but he is still our best option and I think keeping him happy for this year will put us in a much better O-line situation than we would be without him.. thoughts?

A mauler? Are we watching the same guy? Kendall has been good for us but like you said on the downside of his career and skills are diminishing. His leadership and willing to help younger players is great. But we cannot and will not pay him what he wants, for 3 reasons

1: It sets a very bad precedent, and Tangini doesn't operate that way.
2: Considering that his ability is decreasing why would we increase his pay
3: We have a bunch of young linemen and I think the staff thinks that at least one of these guys could be better than him or they are eyeing someone who may be cut.

Still, his upside is better than his downside. He is still the best LG we have on the team at the moment , and I really don't want a project next to D'Brick , not yet anyway.
It does need to be sorted out asap though.

    Is this article from 2004?

Honeslty, the guy is DECENT nowadays. He gets minimal push in the run game, and is no where near an elite pass blocker. He made more than he was worth last season, and now he wants even more.

I understand that if we cut him, we don't necessarily have a viable replacement. And I know he was a leader for our young line. But he just isn't worth what he thinks he's worth, and there is no room for this kind of attitude in Mangini's type of program.

I’m so sick of these dick heads demanding a raise because they have a good season. I want to see owners start demanding a refund for a shitty season.

Well technically it does happen when players take pay cuts, restructure contracts, etc.

    I see you point though.

Either way you look at it...Pete Kendall does not deserve a million dollar bonus or whatever the hell he is asking for.

I'd like to have him around - he can play three positions on the line and is someone that the young guys depend on. I agree that you don't want to set a precedent of giving in to players who hold out, but I'd bet that as long as he can save face, he'll report. So give him a buck and get him back here for three more years.

Pay Him or Cut Him???? Those aren't the answers.

The easy and right answer is neither.....he plays for his existing contract or let him sit out. Paying more money or cutting him isn't an option. If Pete doesn't like his current contract , let him walk...but that ain't going to happen, since he wouldn't get paid.
