Mangini's press conference can be viewed on the main site. One thing he said in regards to Kendall that I thought was very telling went like this

"In general our, um, contracts, ah that situation they're entered into freely, there are concessions on both sides with any contract and that is the nature of a contract"

Sounded to me like, hey we both made concessions and nobody forced him to sign the contract. If he doesn't like it, tough sh*t. Good stuff to listen too...

He didn't complain about getting 5.2M last year, did he? Maybe we'll give him 1.3M more if he refunds 2.2M... so it gets back to the "level" he wants to be on.

this has me wondering why we never prepared for this day Kendall was not only a provider of leadership at the line - helping Brick's inside responsibilites -but as a backup to Mangold at center. I'd hope our coaching staff has an idea on how to move forward, but the only name mentioned has been Jeno James. Would that be an upgrade, hardly. Does this mean Jacob Bender or the Marco Cavka-type projects have an opportunity to fill in as left guard? Interesting. I have nothing but good will towards Pete Kendall, understand where he is coming from and just hope he strays away from a close competitior.

Adrian Clarke (who we got from the Eagles), who's been spelling Kendall at the OTAs has apparently been impressive thus far. If he can stay healthy, he might just be out answer.

Agreed. If he wants to be released, refund 3/4 of the signing bonus, as he would have only played the first year of his 4 year deal. Otherwise, shut up and play.

This is exactly why I dont understand Kendell's problem. When he restructured the contract they increased he pay last year to over 5 mill so they could decrease it this year. He is completely wrong in this situation and is being a a$$hole. Also he keeps saying that he wants to keep it under wraps but cant shut his fat mouth. On top of all that his skills are getting worse and he is old. Please trade or cut this guy so we can move on. I bet whoever we get to replace him will be an upgrade.

I don't know that he has been "impressive" at OTAs. He is the best and only option really since Kendall isn't there.

What I don't understand is if this has been going on since the Senior bowl why wasn't this more of a priority during the offseason, and addressed by draft or FA? Even with Kendall, the Oline wasn't in the best of shape. Kendall was the starting LG and backup OC. So if they thought Clarke could be a stopgap for a year at LG, there still is no real backup for Mangold. Smith maybe? They really needed to bring someone else in, at the very least for depth. I get the impression the FO was trying to call Kendall's bluff, and assumed he would be there for at least one more season. But it seems that Kendall wasn't bluffing. I just have this bad feeling that the FO not addressing the OL, especially knowing that Kendall might holdout, is going to come back and bite us in the ass this season, one way or another.

In any case I was never a big Kendall fan, and if he didn't want to play for this contract he never should have signed it.

I would love to trade him if we could get anything of value? Other wise he has no options but to play for us, he won't hold out and I think it's worth keep him as a backup for the price we have him at.

His comment that "now that he has good film in the can" tells us all we need to know. If he plays well, he thinks he immediately deserves a raise. It is like that old Chris Rock line...you don't get props to do what you are supposed to do. ("I take care of my kids!")

If the Jets give him a $1mm bump, will he return some of it if he sucks? They should structure something like that. (You get $100K for every game you grade-out as the top OL.)

A bit more information from Cimini's Blog. I agree with his last sentiment, Kendall is as good as gone after speaking out to the media today. That is a no-no in Mangini's mind, and I wouldn't be surprised if they string him along now. Very unprofessional....

    http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/

As expected, Pistol Pete came out firing today at the Jets? mandatory minicamp.

When this morning?s practice was over, disgruntled G Pete Kendall walked over to a waiting media throng and, in essence, ripped the organization for its ?unprofessional? approach to his request for a raise.

The highlights of Kendall?s premeditated diatribe, which, no doubt, was designed to create further acrimony between him and the organization.

-- Kendall, who has boycotted the offseason program because he?s unhappy with his contract, had a brief conversation last night with Eric Mangini. Asked if anything was accomplished with the conversation, Kendall said, ?Absolutely nothing.?

    Was it amicable?

    ?No.?

    How long did it last?

    ?Seconds.?

    Was it professional?

?No ? There were some hard feelings.?

Kendall said Mangini seemed worried about what he was going to say during today?s media session. It?s telling that, after everything that has gone on this offseason between Kendall and the team, that Mangini?s first words to him were about the anticipated rip job.

?All I know is, he wanted to know how this was going to go down today (with the media),? Kendall said. ?I told him to do what he had to do and I had to do what I had to do.?

-- Kendall revealed that after his awful performance in the Jets? loss to the Falcons on Oct. 24, 2005, he received a call the next morning from the Jets, who requested that he take a pay cut.

?That?s entirely unprofessional,? Kendall said. ?I?m taking needles in my back when they?re asking me to take a pay cut.?

-- He said GM Mike Tannenbaum expressed reluctance about re-working his contract because it still has three years remaining. Kendall called that an ?excuse.?

?I must have amnesia,? Kendall said, noting that the Jets renegotiated his contract the previous year when it still had three years remaining. Know this: The Jets re-did Laveranues Coles? contract last November, giving him an extra $1 million. Bottom line: The Jets renegotiate when it benefits them or if they feel the player is truly worthy of a bigger deal. Evidently, they don?t think Kendall, due to make $1.7 million, isn?t worth his asking price, $2.7 million.

-- Kendall?s agent approached the Jets in January about a pay raise. In March, Kendall had a heart-to-heart meeting with Mangini. Kendall came away thinking he was definitely wanted by the head coach.

?He confided two or three business things to me that indicated to me that he didn?t think of me as a player on the move,? said Kendall, declining to provide specifics.

Word has it that Mangini revealed a few ?team secrets? in that meeting to Kendall.

-- Kendall also said Mangini hasn?t returned his phone calls.

?There has been no communication,? Kendall said. ?It?s just really surprising because of how much that?s stressed around here.?

-- This may seem obvious, but Kendall confirmed that he has asked to be traded or released. He said the Jets gave him permission on the eve of the draft to shop for a new team. The proviso: The team wouldn?t accept less than a fourth-round pick in return.

-- Kendall practiced mostly with the second team, although he did get some first-team reps.

?It?s awkward,? he said. ?I?m not happy to be here. I suspect there are people in the organization that aren?t happy I?m here.?

Predictably, Mangini?s press conference, which started about 30 minutes after Kendall?s bombshell, was dominated by Kendall questions. Mangini offered vanilla responses, refusing to criticize Kendall.

?This situation isn?t unique to the New York Jets,? Mangini said.

No, but it?s the first time that one of Mangini?s players dared to challenge authority.

Make no mistake, Kendall is a goner. Mangini is furious that Kendall used this minicamp as a forum to express his unhappiness, creating a distraction. Mangini will release Kendall, but he?s going to take his sweet time. Figure late July, when training camp is starting.

?That would be a lousy thing to do,? Kendall said.

 I am sure glad we didn't take a guard on day one......

Agreed, this is a very legitimate issue unless the team gets lucky with an unexpected cut. I would hate to see a mediocre running game next season after all the hype of the Jones acquisition.

It's not like Pete is a Pro-Bowler. If we have the chance to get younger, bigger, and stronger with someone like Clarke, I say "why not". It's not like Kendall was pushing anyone around so let's not kid ourselves here.

This rumbling fiasco should be snuffed out right now. Cut his ass , or reach a compromise. I really hope this does not distract the team in any way , thats the worst thing about this whole damn thing. One bad apple.....

Yeah, that "good film in the can" line jumped out at me too.

I've always thought pretty highly of Kendall. Much less so after today. He's Gone.

Anyone know of any teams really hurting at guard who we might be able to squeeze a sweeter deal out of for PK?
