Co-sign Stop crying. I find the irony funny that Jets fans feel they have bad karma with first/second/early round Tightends, but some are bend out of shape over Olinemen who were likely Tightends in highschool who couldn't catch the ball. LOL Sorry if I don't see the Greatness in hoping you can find a Samuel in the 4th round (Forgetting that Law was the guy in those first superbowls shutting people down, what round was he selected in again???) when finding a fat guy who can block is easier and can be found later. I agree with what th coaching staff is doing 100 percent, we needed some player makers and they got a couple. The Oline is going to be fine
There are plenty of great defenses that don't win championships. It is far to vague to say that. Great teams win championships Sure any line can open a lane or two. But if you want a strong running game, clock control, play action..etc you need a good line. If you dont see value in these things than any line will do I guess.
I don't include TJ becasue he was acquired by a draft pick that we acquired last year. Had we not had that extra draft pick we would have give up our only 2nd to get him and then we would not have had the opportunity to get Harris this year. I don't agree our line was set, we were a poor run blocking line last year, maybe with another year in the system they will be more cohesive and improve to and average run blocking OL. If that makes you happy, then your are set.
I wanted Justin Blalock the guard from Texas, all alone or atleast Manuel Ramirez, etc in the mid rounds.
Stop crying? That sort of opening in a post is exactly why I don't post very often anymore. It only takes one... "person" to turn a discussion of opinions into a pissing match with personal insults. I don't see anyone "crying" here.... just voicing an opinion on where the Jets O line is now, vs. where it might have been had we drafted more O line earlier in this draft.... and as I said in my earlier post, I was disappointed that the Jets didn't draft a higher ranked prospect given the number of picks they had available. Am I "crying" too? Lastly, the comment that the O line will be "fine" is something Herm Edwards probably said before he got fired/quit/shipped out. This O line is FAR from being "fine". Even Kendall, who is only an average run blocking LG would send this unit into a tailspin, if or should I say when he's traded or released. There is no doubt in my mind that the biggest need on the team was a CB, much more than RB or any other position. Barrett is average, Dyson slightly above that. When we are starting a Pats cast off like Poteat, and rememebr the Pats were drained in the D backfield.... oh yeah, we needed a CB badly. The next biggest need was O line.... look, Clement was a UFA. In a year when guards were buying mansions based on crazy contracts, there wasn't a single team that went after Clement. After floating in the FA market for months, he re-signed with the Jets. This guy is not a good RT, and the rest of the NFL knows it. He's a marginal player, and he was cut by AZ and SF, two REAL good offensive line units.... that is to say, at the time, amoungst the worst units in the league. Nope, I think this is the first BIG mistake the Tangini's have made. And it isn't a small mistake either. Let's not forget that Furguson can't run block worth a shit, and also gave up 10 sacks last year, mostly against the bull rush. He needs to bulk up, gain strength and keep that wieght on through the whole season. This line aint gonna be "fine"..... and Thomas Jones is going to find that out in a hurry.
You have to start on one side of the ball first , and IMO that is the D. I still think we will have a decent enough season , but we still do not have a proven NT/DT on the team. On O. We are going to miss Kendall big time if/when he goes. As TBJ has already said the line is a mess with the odd exception. The real contenders in our schedule will punish us badly. I hate these gimmicky/lucky/clever plays with the likes of Brad Smith , it smacks of desperation to me , but I reckon we will again see this kind of circus act again , simply beacuse we are not good enough to challenge yet. Whilst we have undoubtedly improved with the likes of Revis and Harris , we still have far too many gaps. We will have to wait and see who gets cut and pick up some scraps , maybe we find a gem , probably not though.
I'm not disagreeing with your position on the trade-ups, on that subject we are on the same page. But I think it's a little early to be saying that selecting one position or another would have set the team for years at this point in the offseason. I have been guilty of that in the past, only to realize that draft classes can be pretty weak in retrospect. In 2000, I thought we waited too long to select a DE when we picked up Abraham and Ellis... having so many first rounders gave us the luxury of trading up for a 'blue-chipper' like Courtney Brown or Lavar Arrington. Not realizing that the two guys we got later that round were much better than both. When healthy. The specific example doesn't fit to support my argument in this situation, but it's the concept to strength of draft I am citing in this case. Time will tell.
What has it been??? About 2 and 1/2 months since the draft, I think it definitely qualifies as crying still talking about the draft. The Jets have young players coming back to the Oline, Undrafted linemen and Bender working this summer, plus free agents still available. There are more constructive ways to talk about were you might "believe the jets line is", then still harping over the draft. And over a position that has undrafted players and 6 or 7 round players starting in the NFL year..... it's a major waste of time, IMHO. Also, ripping Ferguson who was a top five pick to me just shows why I couldn't careless about this thread subject and view it as crying. We have talented anchors on the line in Mangold and Brick(who will be better year two), filling in the spots around them is the easiest thing to do in the NFL. You don't need top forty-five picks to get that done and a lot of teams have done it that way. So that's way at this point it is definitely crying. The Oline will be fine.
The fact we picked up two big defensive players who run well has significant impact in building a dominant team. Dyson has not proved to be durable neither has Barret and the other guys are assumed to be role players a corner like Revis with 1st round talent and physical prowess is a must have, take a chance on type player. I know that running the ball is important but more important is fielding durable players at key positions. I saw brady complete 5 consecutive passes on an injured Andre Dyson in the playoffs (making pass rush a non-issue)while taking 3 step drops, basically saying if this is the best CB you have, you're in trouble! With the added responsibility in the 3-4 how can we predict that Barton or Vilma will remain healthy all season we need a core group of LB's that are interchangable. Harris fits that mold versatile with lead by example capability like Ted Johnson was for the Pats. The FO made valid points by adding young defenders that are durable, smart, physical and have excellent speed With that said our O-line was not as horrible as Barlow made it look an explosive RB like Jones who hits the whole low and hard dosen't need a pancake at the point of attack. As for sacks you are going to have them but take this into account in judging players who allowed sacks, who gave up the drive killing sacks on critical conversion downs? But for assurance Kendall will be back and Clarke will replace Moore on the right side, do not discount the scouting report on Bender who I see as no project but a groom in four games to replace Clement.
What made me most disappointed with the tradeups is that I really thought we'd found a better way in the post-Bradway era. It speaks volumes about where we really are that we went back to hackneyed and time-proven ways to fail right on the heels of such a surprising success. I guess the life of a Jets fan is just never going to be easy in the end.
I believe the O line may is the most important part of the offense (a team can win with a great line and mediocre "talent positions" but not the other way around). That said, I don't think I agree with SS's premise that "difference maker" O lineman were available in the spots we would have been drafting at. Nice prospects? Sure. But can't miss difference makers? Not so sure about that. I'm comfortable with the direction they went. I trust the FO knows the team's needs better than we do...only time will tell how it works out.
For now, I'm willing to give the coaching staff the benefit of the doubt. 1. I believe I have pointed this out in earlier posting. I strongly doubt this FO will invest high draft picks to develop. For them, high pick means impact players that can start contributing from year 1. This idea of thought was clearly visible from last year's draft, and this year's draft as well. Expect heavy dose of Darrelle Revis and Harris this year. 2. With #1 in mind, I am inclined to think that the draft, no matter how deep and talented they were in OL, lacked the kind of impact OLs that could contribute this year, a la D'Brick and Mangold - or, they were not going to be available within Jets' striking distance, meaning the FO had to fill other needs instead of paying King's Ransom for the OL. I still do not agree with parting all 4 day 1 picks only to end up with only 2 players, so you know what I would have done if the FO traded all of the day 1 picks for the likes of Joe Thomas. (I have to tell you how I love John Abraham nowadays - he may have been a worthless crying douchebag, but he left Mangold for us at pick 29. What a bonanza) 3. Clearly, the FO seems to think that anybody they could have drafted isn't nearly as good as the OLs in the current roster. Am I happy with them? No. But again, I am willing to watch the season play out. If the season turn out lousy, and that's because the OL has been shaky, then rest assured that OL will be addressed next spring.
i was one of the more adamant people saying that we need to build up the O-Line and im quite glad we didnt. We were weak in the secondary and our LBers needed a young face that we can build a 3-4 around. We did get Jacob Bender who is supposedly doing amazing in camp. I say we see how it goes this year, if it's not what we like, then we go for it in a trade or just wait till free agency/draft '08.
I think what's being forgotten here is that we are still a rebuilding team at this stage. Are we a competitive rebuilding team? Yes. And the reason is b/c of top end coaching and some clutch skill position talent. But make no mistake, this is a roster that is still being shaped. Those who felt we'd be SB contenders after 2 offseason's were kidding themselves. Frankly, our OL was average last season. It was as lightly above average against the pass pass rush, and slightly below average w/ the run. It was still a generally consistent unit that did not stand in our way of a playoff run. Was it dominant? No....but it also wasn't a liability. I look for some improvement on the Ol this season. Cohesion along w/ Mangold/ Brick's development will indeed play dividends. I expect next offseason, that we will take a look at some FA linemen( A guy like Andrews whom we brought in this offseason for an interview and will be a UFA next offseason) and may even go OL in the 1st round of the draft. At that time we will begin to put some finishing touches on the roster in hopes of being a long term playoff contender. This is a process. Building a dominant OL is ALSO a process.
You rebuild with quality depth, not taking shots at a few positions. I just hate that a Harris knee would set the Jets back an entire year in their rebuilding.
I agree. I wanted us to build better depth this past draft. W/ that said, I really liked the Revis pick(even w/ the trade), and even though I hated the Harris trade, he did offer great value and if he stays healthy will be a very good player.I also think Bender, long term, will be a starter, and Stuckey is gonna add yet another gadget weapon for our O. We got players who will certainly help. I'm not sure where the philosophy came from to be so aggressive in terms of trades, but perhaps our FO wasnt crazy about the overall depth of the draft and decided getting quality over quantity was the next best thing.
I agree..I give the FO the benefit of the doubt, but I hope we continue trying to improve BOTH lines!
Me too. Not to jump on this thread but we knew that Kendall was getting old anyway and we need depth on the O-Line. Blaylock might have been a day one starter as well. I thought that would have been great and seeing as we had TJ at this point Improving the running game would have been very nice for Chad who is most successful in play actoin. We may have been able to get harris anyway. I thought Barrett and Dyson were serviceable as CBs and maybe you go DB in the later rounds.
While at the School of Infantry I had a Sergeant that had a great response to questions like this..."If my sister had nuts she'd be my brother"
