1:48PM... Caller is talking to Francessa about baseball... and I am not kidding. The guy describes himself as a life-long Yankees fan and both of them are lamenting the passing of "The Scooter." Mike is going on and on about memories of Rizzuto... mentioning Mantle... "We think of how we grew up as Yankess fans and how Scooter this and that... Blah, blah, blah.... 6 minutes later he's still rambling about the Yankees... Good Christ Almighty... I give up with this guy. Makes me question my sanity as to tuning in in the first place.
Now he's saying, "We're broadcasting live from the Jets training camp and we're going to try to set up something with Eric and Mike Tannenbaum at the end of practice, meanwhile we're discussing the passing of Phil Rizzuto." Caller after caller is now still calling in talking baseball... I had hoped to tell you guys what was going on concerning the Jets but no, he's not going to give it a break and I can't take it anymore... turning it off to maintain my sanity.
You guys are silly, I hate the Yankees and couldnt care less about what he's talking about...however, im sure if he didnt die, they would have been JETS all day...
Let's ease up on FranDog. Coming from a die-hard, life-long, Mets fan. Phil Rizzuto is a NY Icon. His passing deserves all the attention and then some that it is getting!!
Amen. I am a lifelong Mets fan, but used to watch the Yank Me's just to listen to him call the games. "I'ts a line drive, right at the center fielder....(camera cuts to guy running dead towards the fence).., Well, not really" RIP.
Phil Rizzuto is a legend in this town, it's just bad luck he was at jets camp the day Rizzuto died- of course people will want to talk about phil.
I gave up on them about 5 years ago when they could not name two of the starters in the Jets secondary. Eventually, they said Mickens was, eventhough he was the nickel back. Ever since then I can only listen to S. Summers do the Mets post game on WFAN. How can you be a sportscaster in NYC and NOT KNOW the starting secondary for one of the two football teams, stupidity runs rampant in that mans brain.
Any time Mike and the Mad Dog are mentioned let the bashing begin -- as if you are all channeling Phill Mushnick. Its not by accident that they are the number one sports show -- and with very few exceptions -- no one else is close to listenable. (Joe Benigno without Evan is good; Max Kellerman is ok too). They have more sports history knowledge then anyone. They make mistakes -- but no one interviews old sports guys like them. I once listened to someone interview Staubach, on WFAN, and they could not ask a question like how is the game different... Mike and the Mad Dog are like, "1974, Third Q versus Washington, 3-6 from the 18, you are in the shot gun and you roll out left." How can you beat that. I agree that if you are a Jet and Met fan -- you can go nuts. After a Jet win, you ll here, good job by the jets on a game they should have won, not much more to say on that -- now on to the giants. It doesnt surprise me that on a JETS day the Yankees steal the spot light. I assume that anyone who does not get that Rizzuto's death is a big deal is 20 years old or less. Rizzuto was associated with the Yankees actively for 50+ years and was a total folk hero. I hate the Yankees, but while Rizzuto was synonomous with "homer" even when the Yankees were awful -- it was impossible not to like him.
Fine. Rizzuto is a legend, no question. In fact, such a legend that the broadcast from Jets TC should have been cancelled and a whole special from the studio should have been dedicated to The Scooter today. Reschedule Jets TC for another day, that's all.
I'm disappointed because I'd much rather talk about the Jets, but I can't argue with Rizzuto. To me, talking about dead guys and reminiscing shouldn't be an all day thing, since there really isn't all that much you can say, but he is a huge sports figure.
I agree... It has to be talked about... it deserves to... and I'm a huge Yankee fan... But as a Jet fan we get fucked again... I'm sure if it was Giants they'd apologize to the Giants for have Rizzuto die on a day that was supposed to be about them...
