Well, I'm one of those glass halfway full kind of guys, however the boy geniuses seemed to be sticking square pegs into round holes. We have the talent for a 4-3 but I think its pride at this point that we are sticking with the 3-4. If boy geniuses was committed to 3-4, then NT should have been one of the first needs addressed during the off season. We shall see.
Exactly. Elite and young 3-4 talent is extremely difficult to find. Both SD and NE got lucky w/ Wilfork and Williams. Williams came from the supplemental draft and happend to develop into a force...Wilfork free falled in round 1 of his draft year, and was actually drafted to play 3-4 DE(where he struggled) he happend to develop into a great NT.
The problem with this scenario is that if it is accurate then the Jets are not in rebuilding mode right now, they're in squeeze the last juice out of the orange mode before you rebuild. Honestly the orange is squished and dry all ready. I have no desire at all to see the Jets rebuild over a 4 or 5 year span and that's what is going to happen if they only clean out the lines in the next year or two. Competence will make the rebuild process bearable, the kind of stuff we have seen this offseason will not.
We are in a rebuilding mode. The team is saving every last dime of cap money and I'm betting Chad will never see his roster bonus prior to camp next year. This is a very young team that's still 3 or 4 players away.
lol our lines are garbage, and the main weakness of the team, yet you have no desire to see them fix it. rebuilding isnt sposed to be bareable. your supposed to take your lumps until you have a solid foundation and then you can splurge on other positions of less necessity that will make you a contender. our splurge was thomas jones. but we dont have the line to pull it off.
My point is that it should never take more than 3 seasons to completely rebuild a team. You have 21 draft picks over those three seasons and probably a dozen decent young players on the team you inherit and you have the chance to sign a few impact free agents to solidify things. If you have made the mistake of trading up a few times and trading for a 29 year old runningback and signing a few mediocre free agents (Kenyon Coleman stands out here) to over-priced contracts then you have made that 3 year process potentially much longer. I really liked what I saw out of the Jets in 2006, both in terms of the planning and the execution. That gave me some hope that things were going to get better soon. So far in 2007 the planning has just sucked. It's like the same guys who dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's nearly perfectly last year totally forgot how to spell this year. We'll see if the execution makes up for some of that. It's always possible that Mangini can cover for some of the draft and free agent errors and make lemonade out of lemons. I'm hoping that's the case anyway.
Wow..........I need to choke that down for a second. How can you in so many words basically say they didn't do what I wanted so they are wrong now???? I guess thinking they did forget how to build their team is much more logical then you waiting to see what the season is going to bring. Preseason is extremely entertaining this year in Jets country.
What mistakes did they make in the draft? Not moving down and taking Brick. Moving up and taking two players that have given every impression so far of being very good? This team is rebuilding. Name the 12 young players from the prior regime to build a team around? Who after Cotchery, Rhodes, Vilma, Robertson, Thomas, if you want to add Hobson and/or Coleman that is 7 and not a star in the bunch other than Rhodes. Whoohooo. Sorry that is no superbowl lineup nor the precursor to it! It takes 3-4 years to build depth on a team to the point of making it elite. This FO has drafted pretty damn well if you ask me. They went for quantity last year and quality this year. Oh I forgot you read somewhere that 100% of the move ups in drafts do not work. Sorry that is right? because of that Revis and Harris have to suck not that it matter what Stuckey and Bender will contribute because lord knows 6th and 7th round picks suck too ...................... I suppose in free agency they should have paid for Steinbach/Dockery and somehow gotten a Richard Seymour and Jamal Williams type in free agency because lord knows 3-4 defensive line studs grow on trees. Why I replied I have no idea .This poster gets to the meat of it, they didn't do what the poster wanted............
Cotchery, Moore, Baker and Jones on offense. All 25 or under and capable of contributing with other good players slotted in with them. Moore is starting to look like the 2nd best player on the Jets o-line at the moment by default. Vilma, D-Rob, Thomas, Rhodes, Coleman and maybe Hobson on defense. Nugent and Miller on ST's. I didn't say 12 young stars, I said 12 young players you can build around as you flesh out the rest of the roster. In truth there were another half dozen young guys on the roster who never worked out due to injury or coaches preference. Cavka, Pouha, Darling, Glenn and a few others.
Why are some of you guys using the rebuilding word? get real. We have consistently been a good team the past few years. We have talent, just not the talent to do some of the things we want to do. This team is not rebuilding - Stop making excuses!
