You are the one ingnoring the past. Pennington, simply is one of the top 10 QB's in the NFL. And going further, considering his body of work, and circumstances, Diff systems, two shoulder surgeries, etc... prognosticating on what he can and cannot do effectively, before this season even starts, is ludicrous.
Do you think the first two games will tell us what we need to know? He has had two years to heal and play in the same system and he has to play two teams that will be the barometer of the level of play he has to rise to in the playoffs. If he stinks in both games should he continue to be the Qb when the results are the same against good teams year after year? He has the receivers and the Rb this time around. The O-line is suspect but top ten Qb's work around their teams shortcomings to win like brady did in Sd last year with wr's off the street. Please let me know when the Cp era should end?
One year. This season will be his second in the system, post surgery. and as to the first sentence, ANY COACH in the NFL that Benches a top tier QB after losing to NE, and Baltimore in weeks 1 and 2, should have to win the Superbowl to keep his job. The absurdity of that question, on its face, and in context is almost beyond ridicule.
You're not dealing with logic and reason here, you're dealing with blind, passionate hatred. Simple as that. People here are actually rooting for us to lose games so they can get their guy in, which, as you pointed out, still likely won't happen.
True. Its also a reason to begin to doubt his ability to continue to be a top flight NFL QB. He was not good in the redzone last year. Yes a running game will help and it better. If he continues to be a INt per TD guy who is having trouble in the red zone, pull him. If he reverts back to the Mistake free Chad who gets the job done, then there is no QB controversey. I'm not ready to give up on Chad yet, but I'm getting there.
People make too big a deal of TDs vs INTs, one really has nothing to do with the other. When you've played your whole career up to last year with Curtis Martin behind you and Herm for a coach, you're not going to throw as many TDs as you would with a Harrison or Keyshawn on your team. Of course you don't want INTs, but one or two in a career up to now isn't bad. It's about scoring more points than the other team when the clock runs out, whether you passed or ran for them doesn't really matter.
the way I look at it, Pennington has played as great as he will ever play and will never be better than what he has shown, and at his best the most he ever led us to were 10 wins. yes, consistent 10 win seasons are nice, but unless you follow up 10 win season with a 12 or 13 win season and actually contend for a Super Bowl, 10 win seasons become pretty disappointing. playoffs are nice, but without the team getting better, they too become disappointing. and I don't see Chad getting us past that 10 win plateau.
I thnk part of the reason why TD vs INt is such a big issue is that Chad is known as a smart QB. He's not a gunslinger by any means, but a guy who makes very few mistakes. Last year he made more than he ever has. He made them in the Red Zone, where he never did. I want that to change. He does not need to be a 35 TD guy, but a 15 to 20 TD guy who throws less then 10 picks. I don't care if we pass or run for TD's. I don't like Chad's INT ratio creeping up though. 16 is his largest career pick total. Its only one per game, but in an NFL where the margin of victory is paper thin from week to week I would love to see him cut down on these type of errors.
I would have to agree and it is a reasonable expectation from him for the season (lowering his INT ratio). Hopefully other factors (such as the OL) will not make it harder for him to do that. If they can manage to get the running game kick started, and the OL to hold up I believe we will see a return to mistake-free play on his part.
Don't you think having New England in our division is a bigger factor? Unless you win the division, you have to go on the road in the first week of the playoffs to face a division winner at their place. The only way around that is to win the division, which in our case means finish ahead of New England, to get either a bye or at least a first round home game. Do you honestly think Chad is the sole reason we don't finish ahead of New England? People here act like a change at QB is automatically going to lead us to a better record and going further in the playoffs, they don't factor in that we would still have to finish ahead of New England. That's just how the playoffs work. And having said all that, that's why I think it's impressive that we keep making the playoffs with Chad at QB. Not that it's all we want to accomplish, but the task is much harder when you have a team like that in your division.
Why should we as Jet Fans have to concede that Ne will win our division every year? Chad was never the Sole reason we lost the division or the playoffs but he is a large part of why we can't get to the 10-12 win level so we can win the division. He is at a Key position on the field that can get us an extra win or two if he raises the level of his play. A Qb can carry a team when they get hot and he does not have the ability to do that if everything else on the team is not perfect. Why should we settle for the being a mediocre 10 win first round of the playoffs exit team?
Nobody is conceding the division. I'm simply pointing out that having NE in the division and the way the playoffs are structured is a bigger factor in us struggling to get through them than blaming it all on one guy. We won 10 games the last two times Chad was in there for all or most of the season. New England won more. My point. Ten wins and the playoffs is not mediocre, it is above average. Twelve of 32 teams make the playoffs each year, that is bacically the upper third. Once again, having a dynasty in our division means we haven't gotten a bye and we've had to go on the road. Name me a QB that is going to change that fact.
Haven't you been reading the thread. In order to get past the best HC in NFL, and one of the top Defensive Minds, ever, you need to play the one QB that can change all that. Kellen Clemens of the One incomplete pass attempt during the regular NFL season.
Sarcasm aside you aren't beating a dynasty and a great defensive HC with a one demensional QB who can't attack the entire field.
We beat them on their own field last season with Chad at QB. He is one of the only-- if not the only--QB to win more than once at Gillette. But over a 16-game season the better team is usually going to have the better record, and therein lies the rub.
What part of this arent people understanding. How difficult is it to grasp this statement. Posters talking about Jet fans rooting for Chad and the Jets to fail because we hate him? What the hell is everyone talking about. If you really want to know what we hate..its his inability to stretch the field. We are one of the few teams week in and week out to see 8 guys in the box...not because our QB sucks...but because of HIS ability. HIS inability to put any fear downfield against a decent defense. It kills your running game..it kills your offensive line...it kills your receivers. Unless you are playing on a 30 yard long field...its just not good football sense to have the most accurate QB in the NFL (which doesnt include him anymore)....that cant stretch a defense. Its all about preferences on what type a QB you want to lead your team. Chad is no longer the guy that throws only 18 touchdowns but follows it up with only 6 interceptions. Those days are now long gone. The argument used to be a good one. "Well yeah..he doesnt have a rifle for an arm..but he doesnt make any mistakes". That argument is dead until he proves differently. Defenses that were confused by his playaction laugh at it now. "Oh..your not going to hand off? What the hell are you going to do then..throw the ball 8 yards down the field?".
Because Chad finally put a ball up for grabs deep and even though it should have been picked by Ellis Hobbes who had the best play on the ball, Hobbes did nothing and Cotch made a brilliant play to hual it in. That win was based on a great defensive effort and a terrible play by Hobbes. Pennington was outright awful in all 3 games against the Pats and his bone head play in the playoffs killed any opportunity this team had when it counted.
