It won't, people just likes to blame the 3-4, and the answer to the question is that our dline sucks. Our lbs aren't helping much but our dline has been dominated every single game so far
Agreed.... Not only that - The GOAL of this defense was NEVER to be a 3-4 defense but, rather to be versitile and to be able to get to the line without the offense knowing what fron the defense is in or better yet disguising it and changing it on the fly at will.... I think fans get way too crazy on 3-4 VS 4-3..... And the Jets aren't playing stricty 3-4. Go back and watch that game - The Jets have 5 men on the line a ton of times and 7 or 8 in the box a TON of times..... So, lets not just say AHH the 3-4 doesn't work, Mangini is too stubborn blah blah blah without watching the tape and coming back to tell us what they are REALLY doing. Regardless of the Front, I think the Jets need a widebody in the middle and there's no way I'd re-up DROBS contract with his knee condition.
A 3-4 MLB usually doesn't get noticed, because he is usually in coverage not attacking the QB, Bryan Thomas has been invisible for us this year
That is why we still play the 3-4, in hopes it causes some confusion and we get some pressure. The front seven we have is just not as versatile as they need to be. Thomas, Hobson, Barton in pass coverage make me cringe. That's why we basically play the bend, don't break defense. We can't stop the run or pass, so we give up plays but hope to stop teams once they get in the redzone. It worked last year so we will see what happens. However, making the Dolphins offense look that good is a major setback IMO.
Given this what would the Jets thought process have been in terms of not making a very strong play for Adalius Thomas? I'm having some trouble reconciling the facts on the field with the Jet's offseason thought processes at this point. Either they thought they were going to be mediocre to poor this season and this explains the non-signing signings of people like Andre Wadsworth or they just completely misevaluated (for the second year in a row) their talent in the defensive front 7.
Our DL especially Coleman and Robertson have held the point of attack very well...not great...very well this season - and that is the MAJOR objective of DL in a 3-4 defense. Ellis has not faired so well and I think is just starting to wear down a little. Yeah you would love to have some penetration, but there is only 1 Wolfolk and 1 Seymour and 1 Williams (SD NT) in this league, that provide that type of play. When your DL holds the line, the LB's are to shoot the gaps and STAY in position for backside runs or "cut backs". ERIC BARTON sucked yesterday. Don't tell me how many tackles he had...he was making them 5 and 6 yards down field. I counted 4 plays with my untrained eye that he hit the wrong gap and Brown ran right past him. When the film is stuidied I bet it's more like 10. I also counted a coiuple of plays were Thomas and Hobson did not hold the back side angles and Brown ran right past them....and yes Vilma was just as guilty as the others. When the rookie (Harris) was in there, he too was guilty a couple of times of leaving his gap responsibilities open.
You're really offbase here. Of the three defensive linemen Ellis has come the closest to what you need in the 3-4. The opponents are running the majority of their plays to the left, even though they have an extra blocker on the right. Go look at the film again and you'll see what I mean. The disparity in rushes is not even close. 75% of the opposing rushes are going from the center left at this point including almost all of the rushes on the first series of the game. Opponents have obviously decided to attack D-Rob, Coleman and Hobson as the weakest links in the defensive front 7. Ellis isn't particularly good in the scheme but there are much easier targets of opportunity and opponents are picking on them.
Take a look at the games they've played so far and break down where the action is going on defense. The Jet's right side has had from the point of attack D-Rob, Coleman, Hobson, Vilma and Barrett back there for the majority of the plays. Probably two thirds of the overall plays against the Jets have attacked those five players as the weakpoints in the scheme. The guys leading the Jets in tackles this year are: Erik Coleman (free safety), David Barrett (right cornerback), Kenyon Coleman (right end), Jonathan Vilma (right inside linebacker), Darrell Revis (left cornerback), Victor Hobson (right outside linebacker) and Eric Barton (left inside linebacker) and Dewayne Robertson (nose tackle). Graphically (and I'm not sure I can make this work but I'll try) this is how the Jets defensive tackle stats look right now: ...................................FS.........................SS ...........................E. The right side of the Jet's defense is being attacked repeatedly despite the fact that the offense has a tightend blocking on the other side. The whole thing falls apart because of the weaknesses on the defensive right side. There are 109 tackles to D-Rob's right and 73 to his left. That's probably an accurate picture of how often the opponent is choosing to run to his right.
are you taking into account, motion, pulls, counters,cutbacks, offside pursuit, etc..? i have watched two of the three games and it looks as though the majority of plays in a 3-4 do not attack the defense head on and give good results, atleast not the jets 3-4. our line doesnt get good penetration, especially on runs, and when they do it seems to be on the wrong side of balls direction, which makes me think they let them come through in wrong direction.
Most 3-4's are read and react.......so you rarely get negative yardage plays and usually are prone to give up a bit in the running game etc etc unless you have the horses to read, react, and attack....than you have D like the pats, steelers, cowboys etc those horses are not in our barn yet - but rhodes, harris, revis and even vilma if he hangs around are good starts. jil
