Alright, I got some sleep and here's my scouting report: Clowney is more track star than football player but he has a set of mitts on him. He has sub 4.4 straight line speed and can be dangerous on kick returns because of this. Not the most agile person so if he beats you it is going to be in a race not on quick cuts and jukes. I seem to remember him always at the lead in terms of yards but not really in terms of catches. He only seemed to catch about 3-4 balls a game but 1 usually went for 30+ yards. He is effective on deep routes which lets him set up the comebacks and stop and gos but I don't remember him doing much else. Can make the tough catch over the middle but typically plays outside. Reminds me of Todd Pinkston which isn't a very good comparison if you plan on starting him, but as a 3rd, 4th or 5th receiver he might be able to exploit matchups against safeties or linebackers.
good report rambo id say that about nails it. i think they signed him cuz of stuckey's injury. erither way he was fun to watch time to time at VT so we'll see.
Oh dear lord, you're RIGHT! Maybe this is also a sign that Kellen may be in the near future plans. I mean, why get a guy who specialized in deep routes, with a QB whose passes would be hitting the turf ten yards behind him? But, as you said, as a 4th or 5th guy, why not?!
They can't put him on the practice squad. If a team signs a player from another teams practice squad, they have to place him on the active roster (for how many games I'm not sure). But with Stuckey hurt this is a good depth signing. This is clearly some writing on the wall for McCareins.
Hmm ok. I think that there might have been two spots open on ps, and then ware was put there, so that made one spare ps, and one spare on the roster. I'm not sure though.
I liked him in the draft. I guess the thinking is, We already have McCraphands getting deep and droppping passes, this guy is cheaper, and maybe he can learn to catch....
It seems fairly clear what te draft strategy is.... Bring in your finesse players, let them acquire the skills it takes to play in the NFL, then get your Beef last, because they generally go right in. Cotchery,Stuckey,Clemens,Revis, Harris, and so on.. Next season, you're looking for a DT, a RT, and some OG (Mind you Bender is a project, but will almost definitely play by years end, that means Moore and Bender at some point...).......Then anything else you draft is for luxury, and depth....
Ah, I see. My fault. I was under the impression we still had 12 games left to play this year. Me giving up hope is okay. The organization giving up hope is not.
Not to mention that is totally backwards from how any other team does it. They teach that in NFL 101.
Oh, I wasnt implying that...... I think they feel they can compete with the team as constructed, but there is a big difference between getting a guy that you know has a measurable quality (speed) because you can....and finding a guy that you have to count on his intangibles, which is generally the case with big men.
Not really. The addage is you build a team from the ball out. They have 2 QBs, They got a RB, they got a center and a LT. They went and got DLinemen aplenty in then offseason, they had Drob. But you still have several holes, But its easier to plug the holes they have by drafting someone tocome in, than it is to draft them and wait 3 years. While the addage is valid, you cant ignore the speed of development of each of those positions.
They don't need Coles or Cotchery. What they should have drafted is a couple of big tight ends with good hands that could help run block, pass block and catch the 5 yard passes that Pennington will throw. If they had they probably would have at least one more win now and maybe 2.
If this guy is such the speedster that you posted I wonder why we got him since we & the league all know CP will never reach him with his arm
Ok, so I should have seen the clown jokes coming by posting this. I do remember Clowney from the pre-draft season and the combine as one of those less-flashy wide receivers that would make a decent transition into the NFL. We need a deep threat in the off chance Chad can get the ball down there and he provides it. With Stuckey out and McCareins blowing hard, it leaves us little options except forcing the ball to Cotchery, Coles and Smith with the occasional Baker play. So, adding Clowney gives us that extra option and frees up the short passing game because teams will be forced to protect against the deep pass. But thanks for the clown jokes.
The Jets already have 3 Olinemen on the practice squad Mike Elgin, Clint Oldenburg, and Robert Turner (from the Jets official website).
