Jets LB Jonathan Vilma chats with Joe and Evan. http://www.wfan.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=1083122
Excellent Clip!!! Vilma Does'nt Sound To Happy About Being Taken Out. And If He Wants So Say Something About It He Problably Get "injured" Against The Bills
If Vilma's upset with being taken out, than perhaps he should make more plays on the field that justify him being upset. Until he starts being a playmaker again he has no right to be upset if he's replaced for a few plays by a run stuffer like Harris....
I don't think any player in the NFL every wants to be taken out of a game, especially the captain of the defense. He's never going to say (or any other player in the NFL for that matter) I deserved the coach taking me out of a game. Chad has played poorly this year, but do you think he wants to be taken out.
Good interview. Thanks for posting the link. I think what Vilma said about the fits has been his biggest problem with adjusting to the 3-4. Way too often he has been on the wrong side of the pile and the ballcarrier shoots by, which results in a 6-7 yard gain, even when he is able to recover and be in on the tackle. i dont know if that is ALL his fault, as the DL gets pushed around way too much, but I have definitely noticed him shooting the wrong gap on many plays, and running into the backs of the DL, when the OL isnt firing past them directly at the the LBs.
Barrett got benched in favor of Poteat and Vilma got benched in favor of Harris to start the 2nd half.
He needs to man up and say they're not good enough to run this scheme and he hates it and wants to run a 4-3 and that the coaches are wasting talent in the 3-4...but you can tell he wanted to say more than he did....there were a lot of pauses where it was like he was saying...."how can I answer this without getting in shit?" Thats a way better weekly spot than the Sirius guys do with Kerry every week
You have to feel for Vilma. He is in a tough spot. He is being asked to play a position that he does not play nor that he is suited to play. It kills his value as a player in the league bc it makes him look like an inadequate player. The FO knows that he can't play this position and they are using him as a 'hold the fort' guy. So he is out of position, he is not playing well and it is damaging his ability to earn a good second contract and now he is getting benched. When we all know in the right system he is a pro bowl potential guy. Sux for Jon.
ans no mangini is caught out in a flat out lie.... its in print today too... how will e answer this ? at the presser.... Jonathan Vilma says injury not reason he sat out BY RICH CIMINI DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Wednesday, October 24th 2007, 4:00 AM * Print * Email * Suggest a Story Jonathan Vilma, giving his take yesterday on why he spent time on the bench in the second half of Sunday's loss in Cincinnati, contradicted Eric Mangini's explanation. "It definitely wasn't because I was injured in the game," Vilma said on his weekly WFAN spot. "I had no idea why I was taken out. I didn't even know I was going to be taken out until I was taken out." On Monday, Mangini said Vilma was battling an unspecified injury that "dramatically affected" his play. Vilma, who had only three tackles, called it "a coach's decision." He didn't agree with the decision, saying, "I didn't think I did anything wrong." Asked if he believes his job is in jeopardy, Vilma said, "I don't think it should be if it is." This was the second time in a week that Mangini and his coaches were publicly questioned by a player. TE Chris Baker was critical of the play-calling after a loss to the Eagles.
Mangini is looking mighty stupid right now. Should be interesting to see how he explains this one. Jon Vilma sitting down is not the problem because he's a stiff compared to his former self in the 3-4 defense, but Mangina needs to grow some balls and at least have the courtesy of not lying or atleast making sure players aren't gonna contradict him in public. What is this, a gameshow we're running now?
Mangini is ruining Vilma's career It's sad- when Vilma hits the FA market and signs with someone else, I guarantee he'll be a Pro Bowler in his first season.
