If the Yankees wanted to, they could get Santana. Pelfrey has done nothing but struggle in the majors. Milledge is decent. Martinez is a long way away from contributing. He's like Jose Tabata, except with a shorter track record of success, and Tabata may be a slightly better hitter. Either way, if the Yankees offer Melky, Wang, and Alan Horne and the Mets offered that, the Mets would be laughed out of the room.
Good point; except would the Yankees be willing to make that deal? The Mets would. Why would the Yankees include Wang in that kind of a deal for Santana. Wang is one year younger; and Wang has gone 38-13 the last two years; and Santana has gone 34-19; AND how much do the Yankees have to pay Santana? Thats a stupid trade for the Yankees; and Hank Steinbreener said today that the Yankees are not stupid. I agree. And you want to include Melky and Alan Horne? WHO would be laughed at?
You're crazy. Wang is likely going to be super 2 arbitration eligible next season and those 38 wins would certainly put a dent in the reason they're considering trading Santana in the first place, money. Not to mention the fact that Milledge is several orders of magnitude more valuable then Melky Cabrera.
I think you're selling Milledge and Martinez short here. I'm not going to say Milledge is going to be Gary Sheffield, but if he's "decent" what does that make Melky? Also, considering Martinez has played in AA while Tabata hasn't, I think their values are equal. Tabata doesn't exactly have a very long track record either. If the Yanks are truly willing to offer Wang, I like their odds of getting him. The idea that Melky and Horne will be a major factor is a stretch.
Wang doesn't really make sense for the Twins at all. As mentioned, he will be eligible for arbitration soon. He is horrible on turf... welcome to Minnesota. His numbers in Minn are pretty damn bad
Besides, if you're Minnesota why do you trade a proven ace, one of the top 2 or 3 pitchers in the game for a guy who is a number two at best and some minor prospects? Any other team that is serious about trying to get him can and will offer better than that.
i think your facts are outdated or something. melky was an everyday player this year and was an outstanding defensive player. milledge has worn out his prospect status by now and failed to impress anyone besides mets fans.
Other than walks, Matsuzaka had better peripherals than Wang. Seeing as Matsuzaka is a rookie, making the change from not only another league with a different ball, but also to an entirely new culture and language, I give him the benefit of the doubt. Matsuzaka is a rookie strikeout pitcher who needs a little work on his control, which should come in time. Wang is a groundball pitcher who relies on his defense too much to ever be a true ace. Plus, as mediocre as Matsuzaka has been in the playoffs so far, Wang was 100 times worse.
Cabrera: .273/.327/.391 age 23 8 homers in 545 ab Milledge: .272/.341/.446 age 22 7 homers in 184 ab Only Yankee fans actually believe that Cabrera is as good (let alone better) than Milledge.
I'm overrating Melky a little bit, but Melky is also a centerfielder without any attitude problems. Milledge has had issues, and he's also been playing corner in the pros, don't know if he plays center. Only reason I brought up that deal is because every deal you hear centers around Wang and Melky and someone else, usually Kennedy.
Based on the numbers, it appears the main difference between Milledge and Melky seems to be power. Milledge also started in CF when Beltran was hurt in late July/early August. I don't think either is anything special in CF. If the Yankees are truly willing to offer Wang+ for Santana, I like their chances of getting him. Unless the Mets were willing to offer Maine at that point, they probably can't top the Yanks' offer. Before someone goes nuts, I'm not saying Maine is better than Wang. Age, service time and salary does lower the gap though.
I edited my post. It's a little late, and I'm a little messed up. I do think the Yankees would be willing to do that. But would the Twins on the turf? We'll see. Wang, Melky, and Horne/IPK is a very, very heavy price.
Milledge is 22 and has like 300 major league AB's spread out over 2 seasons. He's hardly "worn out his prospect status". Melky on the other hand has had ~1000 AB's and it's clear what type of hitter he is. Also, the reason you keep hearing Wang and Melky brought up in any proposed Santana deal is because the deal is dreamed up by delusional Yankee fans that want to get Santana for virtually nothing. If the Yankees don't come to the Twins with Hughes or Chamberlain+ they shouldn't even bother.
honestly, i think milledge is/will be better than melky, but i thought that "4th outfielder" and "several orders of magnitude more valuable than melky" were selling melky short. i have no delusions about melky, he was never a top prospect and will probably stay at the numbers he has put up so far. but hes still very valuable and a great defensive outfielder. i dont think that the yankees should even entertain a deal with the twins because they would likely rape their farm system.
Yeah, but Cabrera has 'Got MELK?' t-shirts and people call him the Melk Man. So that means he's good. Also he plays for the Yankees which makes him a better player by several magnitudes compared to any other player with similar stats.
Yeah, but Milledge has a blossoming rap career and people call him L-Millz. So that means he's good. Also he plays for the Mets which makes him a better player by several magnitudes compared to any other player with similar stats.
Nope, wrong. The Mets have nothing like the legendary classic tradition of the pinstripes which automatically enhances any player who puts them on. also, L-Millz is a shitty nickname.
