No you're right it's the talent but Clemens has showed at least as much if not more raw talent than any Jets QB since Namath. Harris, Revis, DBrick and Magold are extremely talented and Washington is a very talented change of pace back and special team player. These are the guys Mangini has brought in. You apparently would have liked a couple of more mediocre bodies this year instead of two outright studs on D and a project RT and potential starting WR and our starting runnnig back who happens to be very good.
Thanks for your concern. I'm not happy about Vilma's play, nor his predicament, nor am i happy about how this FO and HC have gone about rebuilding this team. There are some bright spots to be sure, and some good young players they have drafted, but the coaching has been horrendous this season, and the FO has made some ridiculously bad moves. Anyone who says they expected to be 1-7 this season isnt being honest. They traded away draft picks to get a 30 year old RB (who i like, but that isnt a rebuilding move), and they clearly thought they were going to be competitive this season. They were wrong. They traded away the starting LG without having a backup plan, and at least two first half drives yesterday were halted by the inept play of their left guard giving up sacks. But hey, they put the old guy in the rookie dorm to prove they are the boss. They forced Revis to hold out because they wanted a longer deal, but that deal was just voided due to his playing time. They are not as smart as everything thinks they are, and their FA moves have just been terrible. This HC and FO is too full of themselves for me to like. Getting three new good players a year=a 10 year rebuilding plan. That doesnt fly in the NFL. As another poster said: "I'm tired about hearing "this team is 4 or 5 plays away from being .500. You are what your record says you are." Mangina has done something not even herm edwards did: he got swept by the Jills.
They swapped 2nd round picks and got a solid, proven running back with relatively low mileage for his age. The didn't "trade away draft pickS" for him. They got him for a great price, and there's no real reason for anyone to shit on this move. Should we have done a better job of helping out our run blocking to go with him? Absolutely. I'll agree on this one. I don't think they expected Kendall to blow up like he did, and they weren't prepared. I wish they would have just paid him the million in private before it became a public issue. Once it did go public, Kendall really did force there hand. They made a mistake on this one, hopefully they don't make the same mistake again. At least they got a draft pick out of the deal. Voided, but they have the right to buy those last 2 years for bargain basement prices if he turns out to be what they think he can be. We all would have loved to have seen him in camp earlier, but this was not a bad contract at all. It seems pretty smart if you ask me. Can we give them 3 years? This season sucks, but I think they at least deserve a third year after making the playoffs the first. Yes, you are what your record says you are, but the team is not getting blown out of the water. I've been very annoyed with some things this season too but I think with a young coach we have to give him ONE bad season to learn. Is that too much to ask?
So this is his mulligan season? What happens next year when he finally starts Clemens for a full season, and he makes all sorts of first year starter mistakes? Another mulligan season? What happens when the DL gets run over again because they dont have a true NT to play the 3-4? aNOTHER MULLIGAN? The jills were the 31st ranked offense going into yesterday's game, so dont get too hyped out about the D. In fact, the jills had 30% more yards yesterday than their previous average. Jauron has outcoached mangina three games in a row. That has nothing to do with an "easy schedule". Sorry, but my green and white goggles are off, and I am very disappointed in how this regime is operating the team. They'll get a mulligan from Woody alright, who is interested in ripping off the fans and staying under the cap. This team has upgraded talent at several positions from last year, and stayed the same at a lot. They are worse only at LG, yet the team has regressed. That is coaching.
I won't give him a second "mulligan season". I'm willing to give him one bad season. If we suck this bad next season, I'll be as negative as anyone else about him. I'm not hyped up about a damn thing this season. It sucks real bad. I expect much more from this team and believe there is more talent on it than some give them credit for. You mention the "easy schedule" from last season. To date, our actual strength of schedule has actually been easier than last season .487 last year vs. .483 this year. We're losing games we won last year.
I'm not as forgiving. Mangini has shown me nothing this year, and that includes the ability to adapt to changing situations. The guy is more stubborn than anyone I know, and is more willing to ride things out than adapt new schemes, etc. What came of all those sweeping changes he promised last week? Maye he didn't have enough time to "review the tape." You do realize that we've been beaten by some of the worst teams in the league- heck, we've even beaten ourselves...
I'm well aware of how awful this season has been. He's a very young, inexperienced coach. I'm sure he's learning quite a bit this season. Changing coaches every 2 years isn't a good thing. If the team continues to suck this bad for another season, I'll hate with the best of them. We would have been better off having this season last year when expectations were bottomed out.
Fair enough. One mulligan sounds reasonable. And i put the "easy schedule" in quotes because I agree, the teams we lost to this season have not been worldbeaters: Cincy, the Iggles, the Ravens with their then backup QB, Bills with a mediocre rookie QB/Losman in relief; the schedule argument is a joke, and i never bought into it. The jets roster this season is better than it was last year, yet they are a worse team. i dont buy into the talent excuse either. it holds as much water as the easy schedule argument, and just presents an excuse for poor coaching and bad game decisions. -better at RB with Jones -better at DL with Kenyon -better at CB with Revis -better at LT with brick in his second year Yet, the team is performing worse. In order to get a mulligan, wouldnt it be advisable to ackowledge that the coaching has stunk it up and is entitled to a mulligan? For those who wont do that, play it as it lies.
I agree we have more talent in those positions. Like you did mention earlier we got worse at LG, and I believe we got a lot worse at QB. Pennington took 3 steps backwards this season. The biggest problem I've seen with coaching is lack of balls compared to last year. I hope Mangini goes back to more aggressive play calling. Yes, the coaching has been bad - how good could it possibly be at 1-7 with our only win coming against winless Miami? I'm not sure what you're asking with your question.
I'd be more inclined to agree with you if the guy wasn't so damm stuborn. Whether it's pushing a defensive alignment this year, one which didn't work last year, sticking with a QB who everyone else sees as being more of a detriment than a benefit to his team, poor game strategy and oversight of his coordinators, etc. I just can't cut him as much slack. Conversely, if this guy ran a team where they were trying to adapt from week to week, to the point where you could say "wow, they really tried to win that one," I'd be more forgiving. How many times this year have you found yourself saying "wow, they really tried to win that one"???
Of course there's an OC... BUT isn't it the head coach's (HIS BOSS) jon to step in if something is going completely in the wrong direction? You don't think Mangini should be stepping in here and saying - "Jesus Brian, use Thomas Jones more - it was working earlier!" The actions of the OC, especially on important downs should always be fodder for overrides from the HC... Shouldn't Mangini have said NO NO NO when he heard we were doing that stupid Brad Smith trick play??? IMO it all falls on the head coach... he's the boss - he knows what plays are being called... He can call for another or at least steer the OC in a different direction if he feels the general scheme of the play calling isnt working...
We seem to be more in agreement than not. The question i was asking wasnt directed at you- since you seem to acknowledge that questionable coaching has been an issue this season. it was directed at those on the board who continue to make excuses for bad coaching.
