Wouldn't run a trick play on 3rd and 2 in the opponent's territory in a 3-3 ballgame when his feature back is averaging 5 yards a carry... Mangini - go back to being a friggin' ball boy!!! When do we get a smilie for "MANGINI SUCKS!"
What I dont get is.....the "trick" part of the play wasnt the part that cost us the fumble. Leon just fumbled it, it's as easy as that. Even if pennington was giving it to Leon, the same thing was going to happen.
It was 1st and 5 after the penalty and we only managed 3 yards on two downs. Yeah great line play and play calling
Wasn't one of the knocks on Herm that he was too conservative? If we execute the play it doesn't matter how its run? How about we place blame on the millionaire players sometimes?
I don't know, I liked the call personally. Leon had the chance to break a nice run there if he held on to the ball. I was at the game so maybe that is why our opinions differ, not sure....
Are you an idiot? Washington fumbled the ball. If he held onto it, he had about 5 yard clear rushing lane. How is that Mangini's fault? Granted TJ was running well, but that is why you have a change of pace back like Leon on the roster, to catch defenses off guard especially in the red zone. I have no problem with the call, I have a problem with Leon dropping it.
I dunno man... I don't like putting a small back in a situation where he's gonna be taking a handoff from someone who doesnt usually handle the ball when you need to smash out two yards... it just doesn't make sense... TJ was averaging 5 yards a carry... Leon is great as a change of pace back, and can definitely make plays IN SPACE, but that was not a space play... we needed two yards to continue the drive... I put that ALL on Mangini... I love trick plays - they are GREAT - fake a punt here and there, maybe let Brad Smith run an option one day - FINE... but, there is a time and place for everything, and our coaching staff CONTINUOUSLY runs these assinign versions of trick plays on short yardage situations when we should really just be pounding it out... Other coaches must be laughing... literally... when they see something like that called...
That's fair, I just like Leon. But I can't argue that the play calling has been spotty at best this year....
I love Leon... I think he does great thing outside the tackles, and I think we should get him the ball more... just NOT in that situation... I think that play call was utterly atrocious... Treat it as 4 down territory, knowing on 3rd that TJ is getting the ball twice in a row... he will get 2 yards there 99% of the time... What Mangini/Shittenhemier are telling the players there is that they have no confidence in anyone to get 2 yards, and we need some stupid gadget play to do it...
Its not the fumble that made it a stupid play call... even if it WORKED OUT, it was still ridiculous! WHY NOT SMASH JONES IN THERE? Can you answer that? He's our supposed feature back, and he's been ROLLING... so instead of USING HIM in the situation he was brought in for - our MORONIC coaching staff decides to have players who arent used to handling the ball in that situation - i.e. Brad Smith execute a trick play??? Not to mention the fact that splitting CHAD out wide brings one more guy into the box to stop the impending run? This was the STUPIDEST play call I have EVER seen in a football game...
Way to over react on a play that was basicly Leon's fault. Put two damn hands on the ball. he knows better. That play would have been fine, a non issue, if Leon is not careless with the ball. There is plenty of things to harp about with the jets, pick a reasonable one.
I couldn't understand that play call at all. I was in the stands and I immediately noticed Smith in the QB position. Everyone did. The play was a mess...but why was it called? Do they have so little confidence in Jones that he can't pick up a few yards? A First Down from Jones would have sparked the Offense better that a botched trick play. At this point, I'm not even sure that "why" matters anymore.
Once again, if Leon holds the ball and executes we are all saying what a smart call by Schotty. Lets keep the blame where it belongs.
WHY would anyone EVER say that was a SMART CALL? I don't get it... trick plays should be used to SURPRISE the defense for a possible jugular ripping big play - NOT in place of an EASY RUN for our feature back... What other coaching staff has consistently used such STUPID trick plays in situations where Jones could easily get the first down himself??? Has he done anything to prove he can't get two yards? NO.
In reference to these "Trick" plays, Has Brad Smith ever dropped back to throw a pass? I don't know what the trick is. we set ourselvs up to not gain anything. Penny can't run routes, Brad doesn't throw. It just doesn't make sense. . .
EXACTLY!!! We set up in these confusing, tricky formations that require people to perform in roles they aren't used to... and for what? To replace a between the tackles run or a screen pass? We aren't going for home runs on these plays - just creating more confusion on our own side of the ball and shooting ourselves in the foot...
As if it weren't enough that the Pats are 8-0, BC is ranked 2nd in the country and the Sox just swept the WS we have to have a jack-off Pats fan come here and demand Mangini sucks smilies. Serious Russ, GFY.
Second guessing the play calling is completely asinine. The structural problems run too deep. This team is physcially overmatched game in and game out. The coaches try to mix it up so they can mask this factor somewhat. Can't blame them for trying since I myself have no confidence that we can use a power running game consistently. The impetus for that call was the 2 previous plays where they did try to pound it and they were stuffed both times. If they try pounding it again then you will hear howls of how this staff's play calling sucks. Damned if you do, damned if you dont. We actually have pretty decent skill players on both sides of the ball. I have no problem with the Leon call as he picks up the 1st down if he holds the ball.
I agree, there are alot of people on here just looking to blast the coaching staff. If you notice they ran that formation alot earlier in the game with both Jones and Leon with a mixture of run and pass. It seemed to work pretty well. Just a bad play by Leon.
