Every article makes it sound like Ryan knew he had the Jet DC job in his back pocket before he was let go, so I expect this to happen. I think Ryan will do a great job working with a HC who agrees with his philosiphies, as opposed to working for Al Davis, who only wants man defense.
It isn't that bad really. They got much better as the season progressed. Sione Pouha could be the answer at NT. We have room to improve, but I don't think it is as bad as you might think. Not to mention David Harris is a freakin beast.
Well, David Harris is the only one worth mentioning. So let's keep doing that. Where was Pouha against the Chiefs? The other 5 positions are all jumbled up and playing like a bunch of mediocre scrubs, if I'm being nice.
This makes a lot of sense since Mangini and Ryan worked together in NE, when Ryan was the LB coach there. I hope this works out because Mangini and Ryan would be on the same page with the 3-4 defense.
That tends to happen when Davis insists that Warren Sapp, a 3-tech DT, play the nose when there are other options available. Ryan was handcuffed by Davis' dumb, outdated defensive beliefs.
I understand what you are saying, but overall the defense didn't play too badly in the second half of the season. I think with the addition of Rob Ryan we will improve on defense just with hiring him. Not trying to say the defense is good they way it is, I just don't think it is a "mess" as you had originally stated.
Defense improved once they started to become more creative in the blitz packages, which probably means that Mangini started to take more control over the defense.
I don't know much about this guy, but everyone here seems too be happy about the potential of him coming to the Jets. The simple question is, why? If I wasn't convinced that this guy was the answer, what would you guys say to convince me aside of the the connection to Mangini and his last name being Ryan? Is he a great schemer? Does he get the most out of his players? Does he make great adjustments on the fly? I remember his name coming up last season when the Raiders had a much higher ranked defense but they fell into the shitter this season, which is likely to be at least part of the reason he lost his job. Does this concern anyone? If no, why not?
I didn't watch a lot of Raiders games, but the ones I saw, he showed that he was a pretty creative guy in the front seven with packages and blitzes, even though the personnel he was given didn't fit his style. I also think it's important to have a HC and a DC that are on the same page with their beliefs, and no one is closer than Mangini and Ryan. The biggest difference I see between Ryan and Sutton is creativity. Sutton never showed any creativity, it was pretty much "what you see is what you get". It wasn't until Mangini got involved two years in a row that the defense became more complex and hard to read. Ryan is similar to Mangini in that regard.
I didn't say the defense was bad. The secondary played pretty well. But the front 7, the part I'm talking about, is a complete mess. Harris led the team in tackles every game, and then it was secondary, secondary, secondary. We are HORRIBLE at defensing the run. Which is magnified by the offense's inability to sustain a drive.
Does anyone now feel that Bob Sutton was a temp-hire while Rob Ryan waited out the Raiders situation?
This kinda falls under the Ryan/Mangini relationship. I guess that can be as good a reason as any, but it'd be great if it wasn't the only reason.
Absolutely. Once Mangini was denied permission to hire Ryan, he just decided to go with Sutton. Ryan's definitely been his guy since day one.
I know there was some rumors out there, but it's official.. You guys might get what you wanted.. http://www.insidebayarea.com/ci_7856024?source=most_emailed
Thanks for the heads up, but it was posted earlier. I'm being nice, because I expect some people after me to verbally rape you for not reading the board.
We only jab because you're not letting your guard down. We wanna get some hooks in, why won't you let us?
