Bing, a former standout at Southern Cal, was a fourth-round pick of the Raiders in 2006. He spent the 2006 season on injured reserve, got cut, spent a couple of months with the 49ers and got cut before the ’07 opener. If Daniels’ name rings a bell, you have an unbelievable memory. He was in camp for four days with the Jets this past summer. I’ll come clean: I had no idea until I googled him. Actually, he was released when No. 1 pick Darrelle Revis ended his lengthy contract dispute. Doesn’t it seem like yesterday? Uh, not really. The Jets also worked out former Broncos TE Wesley Duke, a former college basketball player. Everybody is looking for the next Antonio Gates. Keep looking, fellas, it could take a while. The season ended 10 days ago, and, as far as we can tell, defensive coordinator Bob Sutton still is employed by the Jets. On Monday, GM Mike Tannenbaum said Eric Mangini still was evaluating his staff. That, of course, is coachspeak — or GMspeak, as the case may be. As the days pass, it’s becoming clear that Mangini is waiting on a potential replacement to shake free from another team. Oakland’s Rob Ryan, perhaps? Or maybe someone still involved in the playoffs? Or will Mangini simply retain Sutton? That would be a shocker. Still no word on potential replacements for special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff. Two experienced coordinators on the market are Frank Gansz, Jr. (fired by the Ravens) and Keith Armstrong (fired by the Dolphins). One league mole tells me that he wouldn’t be surprised if Westhoff, sitting out 2008 to resolve medical issues, resurfaces in 2009 with the Dolphins. Miami VP Bill Parcells absolutely loves the guy, and Westhoff is a Florida guy, having spent 15 years with the Dolphins before coming to the Jets in 2001. I had a weird feeling about Westhoff retiring and un-retiring Parcells-style for the Phins...
I don't know about 'next big thing', but they tried him at LB and safety before he got injured I guess. I wondered immediately if Rob Ryan had been in contact with Mangini and gave him a wish list before Crazy Al dropped the hammer, but then of course that would be tampering... :wink:
Westhoff is retiring because he has cancer. I don't know if it's life threatening, but that's still pretty bad. I wasn't trying to insult him or anything...I just think he's done with football.
If Bing can stay healthy, it'd be cool to see what he can do at SS. He could be the compliment to Rhodes we're looking for. Definitely helps close the gap between us and the Pats...
Before Bings Senior year, if im not wrong he was projected as a late first rounder....Wasn't he a safety?

Yes, there were people on this board that got pissed when we selected Eric Smith and Bing was still on the board.
Yeah, Bing was a MAJOR prospect his first couple years at USC. Then somewhere along the way, everyone discovered he was too slow to play safety. Then he got injured a few times. I was pretty pissed when they passed on him for Smith. Obviously, neither one is a world beater. Cant hurt. worst case scenario is he gets cut in training camp.
You do realize that the free agency period hasn't started yet. Who exactly were you expecting them to sign at this point in the offseason?
I'm not asking for big names right now, but the Jets tried this last year-- finding the diamond in the rough. It didnt work last year, i dont expect it to work again.
Getting in Bing's a little different than what we did last year though. He's got real potential. A high round prospect who's been plagued with a huge injury. He's still got a shot. Last year, we brought in guys who'd past their prime.
