In 30 years of rooting for Gang Green there are 2 seasons I felt we were almost there to compete in a Super Bowl. Thay would be 1986 aqnd 1998. In that time the Giants have been to the Super Bowl 3 times since 86'. Now they are knocking on the door again. My question is in two parts A) When do we get our time in the sun? and B) How long will Mangini and Tannenbaum have to get us there? Every once in a while this franchise will throw you a bone like a Wild Card appearance or an upset like the Pitt game earlier this year but if you look at the Jets over the years we are some dedicated fans to watch the caliber of ball this team has given us. Other then the all to brief Parcells era it's the same old Jets :smile: same losers through and through. The Giants this season have a head coach the players love to hate and to boot a new GM and defensive coordinator and are 1 game away from another Super Bowl appearace.The Jets as usual are planning for a early draft choice in 2008. When Tanny and Mangini took over we knew it wouldn't be instant success but a rookie head coach and GM go 10-6 in their 1st year followed up by a 4-12 embarrasment. What do we take from this. Let's say the Jets fight hard and finish a respectable 9-7. I would be happy. Now let us say they go 6-10. This is where Woody makes a choice to keep them on or God forbid decides to scrap it all and start over.Now many here including myself thought Mangini while not proven could be the next Belichek if Woody does fire him it will be a long time till we see a playoff spot any time soon. Where do you see the team after 2008?
I seriously don’t think they can weather another 4-12, 3-13; hell 7-9 season. If these armatures are still around after another disastrous season especially if Chad stays and it’s a re-run of this year; then we officially can say Woody has no real football interest, it’s all a financial exploit for him and that spells doom for all of us rabid fans that want nothing more then a championship to call our own. Look franchises go through these up and downs. We have enjoyed what I would consider a lot of success lately and that’s a plus but the next level has eluded us for a long long time. I keep telling myself that it will take a few year and in retrospect I wish we never had a 10 win team last year to only fool me and many others in thinking we were a player or two away. It’s going to be a bumpy ride to the promise land and I’m all in! Tannenbaum has been around the block and has cut some masterful deals to secure players for us; but our head coach has displayed as much attention to detail as Woody has in regards to weather his team succeeds or fails. I’m not saying I want a Jerry Jones or Arthur Blank who makes appearances on the side lines to scare the shit of his employees but I want an owner, coaching staff and Upper management that is committed to winning. That remains to be seen!
Until we have a solid young QB who the entire organization believes in to build around we are on a path to nowhere.
Even if Mangini and Tannebaum aren't in their current capacities, they'll still have a job with Woody. Bradway was the NFL's worst GM for 5 years under Woody and incredibly still has a major job with the Jets. Woody has no balls to fire anyone.
Deion Sanders actually said something coherent the other day. Quarterbacks will build or break your franchise. The most consistent QBs go to the playoffs year after year. Once we have a consistent QB we will make the playoffs on a consistent basis. Either that or a top 3 defense. Be nice to have both.
What teams have been consistently good without have a good QB running them? I can't think of any offhand, at least not recently. The NFL is a QB driven league at the moment and the consistent playoff teams either have a star QB or at worst an above average guy like Matt Hasselback.
There are some promising young players on this team to build with, but they need to fill in the holes in between. Jury's still out on the QB, but that's to be considered as well.
Depends what the goal is. If you want to make the playoffs once in awhile yes. If you want to consistently be a contender for a SB no.
The man has a point guys. I have always believed that the QB is the single most important position. I haven't given up on clemens yet, but I wouldn't be hesitant in drafting a QB if Kellen plays like he did last year.
I agree, if KC plays like he did for an entire year we will be in position to draft a good QB, like Tim Tebow. Its all QB in this league.
It'll be interesting to see how Tebow performs next year with a running game. I live in north Florida (Teeeeeboww country, actually friends with his cousin) and have become a Gators fan, but the way he played this year will not translate well into the NFL. He has the potential, he has the talent but he needs to develop more of a traditional pocket presence for him to be worth a sheeot as an NFL QB. He's not going to be able to put his shoulder into LBs all day at the next level.
Of course you need a good QB. But a good O-line, running game, and D are just as important. Look at the jump in offensive production the Browns had this year with an inaccurate, INT prone QB playing for them. Build a good all around offense and you'll probably find a QB.
The Browns are kind of a sucky team that has been rebuilding for years since Kosar was done. They got a playoff year out of Vinny and one out of Couch in 18 years. They also know Anderson isn't the answer and will probably now build the team around Quinn.
True, but under Crennell/Savage they have built a dominant O-line and two dominant passing targets that give them the chance for an elite offense in the future. Plus Wimbley and a kickass young secondary for the D to build on. I don't care what the Jets or Browns or whoever looked like the past 15...39...whatever amount of years. The "rebuilding for X amount of years" thing is just a sign of fan frustration to me. In reality we've been rebuilding for 2 years after our last rebuilding project failed because of poor organizational philosophy and mediocre coaching. It's not really fair to put the past failures of a franchise on new coaches.
I think they made much more brilliant moves than that...drafting Thomas...signing Steinbach...signing Bentley (sucks for his injuries)...trading for Fraley after Bentley got hurt...signing Schaffer... That O-line resurrected Jamal Lewis' career, made Anderson look way better than he was, and is still in it's early (even pre-prime) years. I like that they built their line before/at the same time they got their young QB. We tried to do the same thing but the fact that Mangini overrated our O-line talent killed Clemens this year. Hopefully he's just confident enough to stick it out and we fix the O-line this offseason.
Winston – don’t forget that the “Browns” left town and became the Ravens and won a championship. I think its more fair to attribute their current rebuilding to being a “new” team. Also – your coach will look as good as your quarterback; to say anyone is ‘overvaluing’ a quarterback is laughable.
