I'm kind of torn on this. Samuel + Revis is one of the best defensive backfields in the NFL however the Jets have so many more pressing needs that giving a huge contract to a CB might be a misuse of funds...
The jets want to run a man coverage/blitzing defense. If we are going to do that we need another coner opposite Revis...I am ALL for this guy.
indeed it would be a misuse of funds. If this team has any strengths at all, it's the secondary. We can either make a pretty good secondary into a great secondary (all the while weakening a rival) or we can focus on shoring up various other positions with money that would be tied up in one player.
The philosophy is likely based solely on stopping the Pats. Lets face it, the only way we're getting to the next level as a franchise is by beating our most immediate competition; The Patriots. Their greatest strength is the passing game. Adding a "1B" type CB like Samuel to pair w/ Revis, would give us a secondary capable of matching up w/ anyone. Do i like the move? I guess it depends on what else we plan to do in FA. If this is the only move we're gonna make...I hate it. But if we target acouple Young linemen on both sides of the ball...and sign acouple role players...I think signing samuel would be a fantastic move. We shall see.
You know what though look at San Diego. They have two excellent ballhawking corners and wound up with 3 picks against Brady. I'd have to see what the numbers are before I commit but I don't think it'd be a bad thing to have 3/4 of our defensive backfield perennial pro bowl caliber players.
Fine with this, as long as they make a serious run at a top FA O-lineman and draft a DT and or a DE/OLB (Gholston) in the first 2 rounds. It doesn't cover all the basis, but it touches on some of the biggest problems. Gotta believe that Mangini knows what he needs to do at this point.
The biggest way to compete with NE is to be able to answer their score for score. The Jets offense is an embarrassment right now. It's not even in the same league.
I suppose we can assume(and pray to the football gods) that we plan on addressing the other pressing needs along w/ signing Samuel. Ya gotta admit..a secondary that includes Revis, Rhodes and Samuel w/ an even SLIGHTLY better pass rush...is quite the asset to build our team around long term.
wtf is Mangini doing? Doesnt he know we can get the same effect by adding a good pass rush, which ultimately would likely cost us less... pass rush, no Samuel > no pass rush, Samuel...
Vernon Gholston my friend... If we draft Gholston at 6 and sign Samuel...we are looking at a top 10 defense next season.
I hate to clog up this thread, but another thing to keep in mind is the following... Mangini comes from the Parcells/BB tree. One thing we know about both of them is they love to bring in "their" guys, regardless of need or position. Love the philosophy or hate it....this could be a prime example. We're talking about a top 10 corner, whom our head coach knows very well and had a hand in his development..who added to our already very good secondary...would make it a very scary unit. One that could indeed go head to head w/ the Pats passing game(assuming the pass rush is improved). And likely already knows the system and mangini's core values.
There is no doubt of that fact. However the fact that our offense is completely inept will sink the team no matter how good the D is.
You really think if the Jets were going after Samuel they would tell the media? We would all love Samuel but the bottom line is that the Jets have to use all of their resources this offseason to fix the LG and RT spot. And to find pass rushers who can actually beat someone one on one. I would draft another cornerback mid rounds to develop. We also don't know if Samuel is that great or if he's just a product of the system. He's obviously an above average corner but he's not going to be worth a Nate Clemens contract.
Our offense is not completely inept. We have 2 very good receivers, we have a good receiving tight end. We have a #1 back and and good third down back. All we need to do is shore up the line and you have a football team who can move the ball. I'm convinced Chad or Kellen, whoever wins out at TC, will do very well behind even an average line.
After Samuel Drains the Cap along with all the "in their prime" Guards and Nose Tackles we want to sign, how much money will we have left to pay a #6 overall pick and 6 other guys, not to mention re-signing players that have expired contracts? Let another team hurt the pats by signing him and go after someone who will not want 75M over 5 years. And how many times have we seen a player get his money elsewhere and have bad seasons- knowing this franchise it may happen.
You could have Deion Sanders, and Night Train Lane at CB, but without a pass rush, we'd be calling both of them "toast." What a waste of cap money.
