Agreed. I just want 2 c us get better as a team. Do I think that we would over pay for him. Sure, but how do we bolster our defense? I'm sick of us bring in soon to be retired or middle of the road players. Combine him & Revis & our pass rushing LB crew improves dramatically. Can we stop the run though. On offense... Well we all know what we need & there is plenty of FA availibilty that may not break the bank.
you guys are crazy to be against this. Asante Samuel might be the best corner in the NFL. When your archrival has possibly the best passing offense in history you go out and stack your secondary. With Samuel, Revis, and Rhodes in our backfield we immediately have an outstanding secondary. Its true that pass rush makes this better, but with a secondary like that we can afford to play man-to-man and blitz the hell out of the other team, which no matter what bums we have will lead to higher sacks and pressure. Plus we will still draft Gholston!
Many teams have a lot of cap room right now and many have more than us. My guess is that his contract is going to be huge because of this. If they can do it in a cap friendly manor, and still get other guys, go for it. I'd just hate to see us blow our load on one guy who by himself won't help all that much IMO. edit: We also have a guy named Kerry Rhodes who needs his contract extended.
I don't want to see us blow our load on just him either. But I think if we can get him and address other needs, he would definitely help our team. I mean the guy is a huge upgrade over Hank Poteat, and Justin Miller has never lived up to his potential. And any left guard we sign will be an upgrade over Adrien Clarke, that guy is a freakin turnstile. So it doesn't have to be Alen Faneca. And yes extending Kerry Rhodes has to be a top priority, but they've got the cap room to do it.
When all is said and done we will be in the neighborhood of 35 mil below the cap, we would hardly be blowing our load on one guy. If this is the only move they make then its a bad move but nowhere in the article did I see them say that Jets are only looking to sign Samuel. Its damned if you do and damned if you dont with Jets fans.. This is nothing more than baseless speculation anyway but there would be nothing wrong with signing one of the best CBs in the game who is just entering the prime of his career.
First don't believe shit you hear. I will believe it when I see it. If it does happen though I think it is a good move especially with Vernon on his way. After that take care of the O line and a NT and lets rock and roll.
It makes ZERO sense for a team with a decent defense and a HORRIBLE offense to use the no 6 pick AND their biggest FA signing on defense.
Yeah I get that so you get a left guard in FA and draft a RT in the 2nd rd and a WR in the third..does that work for you?
Not that I necessarily disagree, because I don't, just gonna throw this out there, The bears made it to the superbowl with a bad Offense.
Where did you get 35 from? Everywhere I've seen shows us under 30. Anywho, I hope you are right and we can get a couple top tier o-linemen, re-sign rhodes, sign Samuel, all our rookies and still have a manageable cap. If that's possible I'm all for it.
I think this would be a great move. It would make our secondary awesome and give the Jets the ability to play their safeties closer to the line on a lot more plays. It would also give the Jets a guy who already believes in what the HC is teaching and a locker room presence.
i would bless the move and it would take a 6 yr 80 mill with loads of guarenteed money but you know what..... so what !!..... when have the jets broken the bank recently?? - they need to do it and giving us a very very good pro bowl caliber CB tandem will provide the foundation for them to load the front 7 with stud pass rushers such as gholston.... can you guys imagine with potentially 2 shut down corners the flexibility we would have at the line of scrimmage. its endless. the ONLY thing that speaks against this is kerry rhodes.....we would have alot of coin tied up in the CB's and rhodes may be iffy to resign. can you say franchise tag for rhodes?? jil
The 35 was an estimate, I have seen that we are about 27 mil under the cap right now. Figure with the cap increasing again, restructures, pay cuts & cuts we very well might be more than 35 mil under when all is said and done. Signing Samuel does not mean we can't sign some guys for the OL too, now whether or not we do remains to be seen but it wouldn't be because of Samuel.
I don't like it at all. Spend the money on the front 7. I absolutely hate watching 7 minute 15 play drives against us. It wears down the defense for later in the game and takes the offense out of any rythm and make the offense press. You have to stop the run in the NFL to win games. AS does nothing for the defense to stop the run. Bring a safety up, the offense goes to 3 wide and still runs the ball because we cannot control the LOS.
This would give us the best secondary in the NFL. Add a pass rusher (Gholston), and you're looking at one of the best pass defenses in the NFL. And hopefully with a full year of Harris (and possibly Vilma) will help our run defense. We still will need some more beef up front on the defensive line, but our defense would be looking fantastic. We'll see though. I'm on the fence about giving that much money to a cornerback.
I Like Gholston. I like Samuel. But unless the team focuses it's under-the-cap money more on the OL, this "top 10" defense you speak of will spend too much time on the field to the point that they might not become what we wish them to be, a top 10 D. Unless Samuel comes in following the signing of Faneca and a free agent RT, then I'm against the move. Randall Gay may be a more affordable option.
You don't have to sign FA's in any specific order. They could bring in Samuel first, then an RT, then a LG. Possibly another WR. After that draft a NT, OLB, maybe a DE, and possibly another WR, in no particular order. Throw in some young OL for depth. BPA.
