I think Samuel is a big gambler. I suspect that if he gets paid like an FA, then he will be reimforced as a gambler on the field. Perhaps we will do better growing our own CBs -- there are some interesting CB alternatives in the draft. ...such as that tall drink of water from South Fla...!
Ty Law was the same way. Herm loved him too, even though he got torched like a propane lantern most of the time. Yeah, he came up with some spectacular picks once in a while, but there were 5 other times when he'd be sprawled out like a bear-skin rug while the WR is heading for the f*cking end zone.
You guys are nuts if you don't want Samuel. Him, Revis and Rhodes would give you a sick secondary for years. Of course he wouldn't fix all your problems, what 1 player would?
Samuels gets a lot of over-the-top help on the Pats because he's such a chronic lone ranger in his gambling techniques. I think that DBs who play their roles have a better chance to make plays in this NYJ defense. Kerry Rhodes isn't just doing his thing, he's playing his role out there. A home grown team that comes together with the same point of view is big time. That's apparently the philosophy that's growing here. The other thing is do the NYJ want to invest most of their cap room in a FA CB? We need OL! We need SPEED! We need CBs (that's plural, as there is never enough of those). Still and all, it IS a gas to watch Asante and Ty play their games.
It's been a gas watching Rhodes this year too, the way he's been jumping routes... almost reminds you of Asante or Law. Hey, no question that we'd have a pretty sick secondary with Samuel, Rhodes and Revis,.... hell, that's a no brainer. It's just that I don't think proponents of this move realize just how much some team is going to have to anty up for him. This guy is going to be EXPENSIVE.
GO after him. Last year Pats went after everyone and look at the results. The question of us signing Moss can up and some people jumped to say hes cancer to a team he proved that. They also got thomas and welker. Then sign Stallworth Spent all that money and are now 19-0... So Dont be cheap on proven players.
Before this past offseason, they were very cheap in FA and resigning people, they have drafted extremely well to get where they are. Do you really want to be a team like the redskins that always sign big ticket FA but never actually build a team.
You have to build the core of your team through the draft. Once you have established a good core team and made your team into good shape financially you can start to explore these types of "wants". This off season we need two offensive lineman and a pass rusher. Those are the biggest needs.
Agreed. Samuel is a luxury the Jets can't afford at a position that commands top dollar and one that is dependant on a pass rush, which the Jets don't have. Let's take care of the trenches before moving to the peripherals.
Today's SB is a good case in point. This game will be decided on who controls the LOS. If the Giants can pressure Brady enough they might stand a chance, if they can't, and he stands upright in the pocket all day long, the Giants lose. Same thing on the other side of the ball.
The way the NFL is interperting the extension rules for the OL, getting a pass rush out of the front 4 is getting harder and harder to do. Having great corners that allow the rush to come from the blitz is becoming a much bigger factor than getting a rush out of the front. Watch how much the Giants ends are held today with no call. They are going to need to blitz to put pressure on and that's when they will get murdered.
A great point there winston, the majority of teams that supply a great pass rush come from teams that blitz the extra guys, because they have corners they can trust on the outside matched up one on one. The Jets need both right now, a compliment corner for Revis, as well as a quality pass rushing threat. They have the money to spend, and if they don't lock up a Suggs or a Dansby, then there's really no reason not to spend it on the top CB available, and create a super unit back there in the secondary. For those of you saying that our secondary is already very good, with Samuel, it'll be even more than that, it'll be the best.
I'm not completely 100% sure of this, but I've heard it mentioned a couple times elsewhere....doesn't Samuels play much more zone coverage than anything else? I'm not buying he's worth the money. I think Nate A. is a better corner anyway and theres way more areas to improve on this roster than to blow our wad on Samuels.
Well, what do you think the defense is going to do with Justin Miller? Do you think he has been busting his butt in rehab? Do you think he has potential as a CB? Why or why not? So little to go on...as far as I am concerned. Still if the NYJ CS likes his chances this year, that's a strike against Asante. Asante is going to cost big time -- what are we $25 million below the cap? Would he cost $15MM of that? What about the OL and free agency? What about other requirements from FA? I think Asante is expensive for what he can bring.
for those of you that want samuel ask yourself this. Is he really worth the money? He's a very good CB yes, but secondary is probably the least of our worries right now. Our secondary played well this past year and i really dont think the jets should shell out a huge amount of money for any CB when the money would be much better spent on our O-line, considering there are a lot of good o-linemen in Free Agency.
We need this unclutch, interception dropping, looking for a huge contract corner like we need a hole in the head. I'm joking, he's a very solid player, but give me an o-line and d-line that can stand up to the pressure and the rest is nice to have.
Talk to him and show just enough interest to drive up the price that N.E.* will have to pay in order to keep him. As a matter of fact, we should do that to all their free agents. Lets face it. If they're going to hate us, lets give them a GOOD reason.
CB is the least of the Jets concerns. He's a nice player but I don't think he'll be worth the money. He does make some mistakes when he gambles and isn't the best tackler. He's no Champ Bailey and will probably get super-overpaid like Nate Clements. The bottom line is the Jets CB will be tested way too much until the Front 7 is completely redone, reshaped from the ground up.
