For me it is very tough between Walker and Toon. I went with Toon, but I really think it is a tie between the two. Walker was fast as lightning, and Toon was incredible.
He gets lost in the shit years, but yes, he should definitely receive some love. I was a huge fan of Rob Moore and Terrance Mathis. Two guys I wish could have finished their careers in NY.
Walker was a definite burner and could beat you deep at any point, but I always considered him a bit overrated. He'll always be remembered for that Miami game though.
He probably had more yardage than Sauer, too (without looking it up) but Sauer had great hands, ran crisp patterns and prevented defenses from keying on Maynard too much. Bambi was great to watch, catching stuff from Hadl. A terrific player, who did well with the raiduhs but was a bit of a journeyman. A little bit before my time- his prime was in the early 60s. Also before my time- i dont even remember seeing him play. Now you're talking. Taylor was a beast, and Fred and Sauer reminded me of each other. Biletnikoff was a terrific player, but used more stickum on his hands than anyone, LOL. I just read he is 65 now. dayum, I feel old.
I voted for Wesley but very close with Al. If Toon wasn't forced to run short patterns he probably would have had a very long career and be concussion free. If the Jets had drafted Rice instead of Toon I think Al would have been in The Hall of Fame with SF. But Don was definitely the Best NY Jets WR and in the top five all-time Jets. We can only hope Jerricho continues to mature and join this list.
I ultimately voted for Toon, but I think it's a toss-up with him, Sauer and Walker. I saw Sauer play and not only did he have great moves, but he had incredible hands. He made more one-handed catches than any 10 receivers you will see. I can still see him catching a couple of balls one-handed behind his back...
I voted For Chrebet, But Walker had some really good numbers. I would say that Toon was definately hindered by his injuries.
These poll results are a sad joke. First of all, Don Maynard (the guy in the Hall of Fame) is missing from the list. Secondly, Wayne Cherbet couldn't hold Keyshawn's jock let alone the other guys on the list. Wesley Walker despite his injury history had 71 career TDs. He is the best Jet WR after Maynard. Here is an exerpt from his Wikpedia entry: He was noted for his great speed, averaging over 20 yards per reception over many seasons (his career average was 19 yards per reception). At the time of his retirement, he was second in Jets all-time receiving yardage. Legally blind in one eye, Walker overcame this handicap to become one of the Jets all-time great receivers. He led the league in receiving yards in 1978, was elected to the Pro Bowl twice 1978 and 1982, and was named the New York Jets MVP in 1978. Walker was one of the dominant players in the 1982 NFL Playoffs: in two postseason games, he caught 15 passes for 314 yards and 2 touchdowns, as the Jets beat the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Raiders, both on the road. His best receiving season came in 1983, when he caught 61 receptions; and in 1986 he had a career-best 12 receiving touchdowns. Four of them were scored in week 3, as he caught a game-winning touchdown from Jets quarterback Ken O'Brien in overtime to give the Jets a wild shootout win 51-45 over the Miami Dolphins. When he retired, he had caught 438 receptions for 8306 yards and 71 touchdowns. Al Toon was an incredible WR to watch. He was an all-pro three straight years until the Jets talent level thinned out and the concussions started. I would rank him third after Maynard and Walker. Sauer has a SB ring but only had a six year career. I didn't get to watch him play so I will say that he should go fourth on the list. Keyshawn has got to be number 5. There is no way on Earth that Cherbet belongs ahead of Key. You could make a case for Coles but I think that Key has been consistent and has gotten his teams a lot further in the playoffs.
I clearly stated Maynard is not on the list because he would win the poll easily. I almost didn't put Chrebet on the list, but he is high on up in the record books for Jet WRs, albeit a lot was due to longevity, he produced for the Jets for a long time. Different people have different criteria, but in terms of Jet WRs he belongs there. Terrence Mathis maybe I should have listed as one of the second-tier guys, but he had most of his success after leaving the team, like Santana Moss. Keyshawn did to some degree but he was a serious impact player in his four years here, so I felt he belonged. Rob Moore, while talented, didn't really distinguish himself as a Jet, I always considered him a poor man's Al Toon. The results have surprised me, I thought Keyshawn would get more and Chrebet not as much. The responses have been great though, especially the people who saw Maynard and Sauer play. Thanks.
Maynard - if you want to re-name this "who is/was the 2nd best WR in Jets' History" then re-name it! #2 - I loved Toon and minus injury he's the run away favorite, but due to lack of longevity I have to say Walker - the best deep threat in Team History hands down.
When I saw the title of the thread, George Sauer was the first name that came into my head (so that's the way I voted). When I saw the choices though, I thought "damn...tough call". WW gave us some great moments and was a speed demon, but I am haunted by too many drops. Toon would be my #2...tough and talented (he paid a terrible price for his toughness...sad). I lived in the midwest during most of Toon's career and rarely got to see him play in those days or maybe I would have stronger feelings for him. All these guys were great though and brought their share of happy moments to me as a fan. Unfortunately my hatred for Meshawn's mouth has always prevented me from appreciating him as a player though.
MarionBarber31 hits it on the head .....................ALL these guys were great....hard to rank them......different eras, different rules, etc. Let's all be thankful and remember them as some of the greatest J-E-T-S of all time!
My vote is Walker. In addition to everything else, my favorite statistic about him is the team he scored the most touchdowns against--Miami Dolphins.
Absolutely. He tortured the Dolphins, that was one of the things I loved most about Walker. Also, someone said Coles should be an option, I guess you could make a pretty good case for him vs some of the guys I put on the poll. I'd feel better about it if he hadn't gone to Washington for a few years, but he's not done yet, either. It's hard to judge while he's still playing, I think.
The problem w/ Wesley Walker that many fail to mention is he had so so hands. He dropped way too many balls for a guy as talented as he was and I think that's what seperates him from Al Toon. Wesley clearly was the better deep threat(I'm not sure there ahve been too many better deep threats from any team) but his shaky hands hurt him.
It would be completely disingenuous to vote for a guy I never saw play (Sauer). That being said.......... Toon is a little bit better than Walker so I am going to vote Toon as the best wr I ever saw play for the Jets.
