I dont consider myself a naive jet fan, and I also consider myself a pretty knowledgable football fan, but I have never even heard of Calvin Pace before this week? Am i undertstanding something wrong because I just dont get how the jets payed milloions of dollars for someone with 10 career sacks in 5 seasons. Now, Im not complaining, im sure the front office is doing the right thing, but can some please explain why Pace was such a intriguing add and solid aquisition for this team. I know he fits the 3-4 mold, but if he is so good, why have i never heard from him. And what does he bring to this team? Is he about to hit his prime? someone please enlighten me.
I dont know alot about him, but he played his career as a DE in 4-3 until last year when they switched to 3-4 and moved him to OLB. He stunk as a DE but did well as an OLB. They are betting that it wasn't a fluke, or him playing better because his contract was up.
i never wanted the guy i just find something wrong with guys suddenly playing great in their contract years yeah he had a position change but i needde to see more from him.I really hope im wrong about him cause 22 million is alot.
Of all the moves the Jets have made so far, this is the only one that I kind of went HUH? I don't get it. I hope these guys have somekind of crystal ball, cause I don't see anything in his past that indicates he is worth 22 million guaranteed, people are saying he only had one good year. When was that? If 6 1/2 sacks is considered a good year for a guy guaranteed 22 million, the Jets are in deep poo poo, Like I said,I like all the other moves, but this one has me baffled
I guess a bidding war between two teams trying to build proto-typical 3-4 defenses would drive the price up. $22 million is the going rate that the economic forces in pro football has dictated for 26 year old edge-rushing 3-4 OLB's. Quite a lot but it is what it is. I'm glad that we have him instead of Miami.
I'm not overly familiar with him either. He didnt get a lot of TV exposure in college playing for Weak Forest. We dont see a lot of Zona games here in NYC, and there are other names they talk about when they mention the Cards. Ironically, he was drafted in the same first round as D-Rob- 14 picks later. 80 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks are good numbers. A couple of guys I spoke with whose football knowledge i trust arent particularly impressed with getting him. He has real good size, though, and you need a good number of LBs in a 3-4.
Tannanbaum described the market for Pace as "extremely competitive" in his interview on WFAN this morning.
Thought this was interesting about Pace from an article today on AP: Dye said another factor in Pace signing with New York was the organization's treatment of former defensive back Jamie Henderson, who suffered a career-ending motorcycle accident in 2004. Henderson, another of Dye's clients, suffered serious injuries, including a brain bruise, and was in a coma for a few weeks. Henderson, who grew up near Pace's hometown of Lithia Springs, Ga., was unsigned at the time, but Johnson gave him a two-year deal despite the fact Henderson could barely walk. "They didn't have to do that," Pace said. "They could've just let the man go on about his business and finish his life however he would've finished. They gave him that money as a gift and just tried to help his life out, and that says a lot about the organization." Now, Pace is getting another chance from the Jets to blossom into the player he always believed
Pace was one of those guys who could have fallen through the cracks. His injury prior to his rookie year was a big blow - and he was on the way to being a #1 bust. Call it contract year, or maturity - we don't know for sure - but Pace became a Pro Bowl player last year. He is young and has upside - and if he's a tough kid with the desire to be great - he can be. BTW most FA boards had him rated the #2 OLB entering FA so if you haven't heard of him - you haven't been up on things in the NFL outside of NY
I mean what is really the difference between the two??? Both are underacheivers who played well in their contract year. I wish the cash for Pace went to a playmaker on O but I guess there weren't any of those around except Moss.
i say good move they filled every hole they could and can now go bpa in the draft.which i hope is gholston
While reading posts in this forum the last few days I've realized the above comment applies to many posters here.
The OP comes on here and admits he didnt hear of the guy and wants to be enlightened, and all you can do is be condescending? Bahhh! The other day someone here mentioned they didnt know what a PSL was, and I took two minutes to post and explained it to him and the thread moved on from there. It wasnt so difficult to do. I guess the neanderthal thing to do would have been to insult him for not keeping up on all things football to not know what a PSL was. So you're the one who who reads the FA boards that had Pace rated #2 OLB? What an accomplished person you are.
What you are saying is good. There are many people here who are not helpful. I answered some questions about Pace the past few days. Everytime I did so I would see posts afterwards where a poster would disregard what I wrote by saying it is ridiculous to pay a guy $22 million for only one season of quality play. You kind of want to give up after that.
