According to today's Cincinnatt iEnquirer, the Bengals had a contract with DRob but were scared off by his knee.
I think it has less to do with the knee than with the fact that all teams- including the Bengals- know for a fact that we cannot afford to keep Robertson. If we can't trade him, we have to cut him. So why trade for him when you could just sign him outright in a couple of months?
This might be a blessing in disguise. Jenks in the middle, Ellis and DRob outside? Sounds like a nice combo to me..Just restructure DRob and see what happens this year against the run.
I think this is true contrary to what Rob's agent says. Sounds like he kneeds to go to Detriot or Denver instead. I'll take a #4 by itself.
We may be better off trying to trade him for basically nothing. I'm not exactly sure what the cap hit will be with that compared to just cutting him. As that article points out we can't do it before June 1st and even then we still have to amortize it over two years. So people who think we get so much money back by dumping him are not thinking about what the true facts are.
his agent is playing hardball, he had permission to seek a trade, and now knows there are at least 3 or 4 teams interested, so he would prefer the jets release him and be able to sign to the highest bidder ... if the jets trade him to anyone the contract talks will go no where because he has no reason to get a contract in place i assume no will will do a trade without agreement to a new contract being a part of it
No one will trade for DROB without a contract in place and the Jets will not pay the 3 million bonus in June. Maybe as we get closer to the draft some interest could get stirred up. I think the guy can be a really good player in the right system. He is only 26 years old.
Does anyone actually read what the original poster said? That it had more to do with his knee? I thought of that before. His knee was always rumored to be awful. He like has no cartlidge in one of his knees. Don't know why someone can correctly post this to start this thread off and then all the responses like ignore this post.
Maybe because they want to believe that there dear NYJs would not use 3 draft choice (2 #1s) to draft a player with knee problems
Look I hate DRob the most on this team, and he's garbage. But how many games in 4 years has he missed due to that knee?
First off, DROB isn't garbage. Listen to Greg Buttle who raves about the guy and who can't understand why Jet fans call up criticizing the guy after he just focuses on the guy game after game and sees a good player. That being said, yes, he has been durable the past 4 years but he plays with a very bad knee.
Except trading him makes him yours. Waiting for him to be cut puts you in competition iwth other teams.
his knee problem (rumored) is not knew, and he's never missed a single game for it, and he's ended both the last two seasons on a 'high' play NT in a demanding 3-4, one of the toughest positions to play. if he plays in a 4-3 next to a warren sapp type (when sapp was in his prime), then he would be a fine addition to any 4-3 team. at least 3 teams will be bidding for him when we cut him, which is why it would be smart for a team that wants him to trade a 4th round pic and get him now. but that's also why his agent is telling him to wait it out. his agent has his ebay page all set to post. edit: the previous 3 posts were typed while i was penning this and they all say the same thing. great minds think alike!
Well, #28Martin, this is a testament to how fierce a competitor DRob is in his ability to play through the pain of a bone-on-bone condition. In many ways, he is comparable to your namesame, Curtis. DRob had a bone-on-bone condition in his knee when he was drafted by the NYJ. This was well known when he was contracted with. The issue is how long can DRob play through the pain at a high enough level to justify his starting on the DL. There is no question that DRob is going to have to renegotiate his contract -- and if the NYJ is going to keep him or trade him for a couple of valuable draft picks, they will have to renegotiate this contract in order to have something of value that is tradable, or to relieve his pressure on the salary cap. It is in the NYJ's best interest to renegotiate his contract before the draft if they expect to trade him for 08 value. Otherwise, they stand to lose any value he might have for them if they cut him. I would think that the NYJ FO will either renegotiate with DRob now or later, because if they don't trade him they will give away a lot of value in just releasing him.
I disagree on the basic point that he is uncuttable before June 1st. He's cuttable the day before the option bonus regardless of when that is. No point in paying him $3 million dollars cash and putting $1.5 million on the 2008 and 2009 caps when you can just avoid that expense entirely by cutting him in 2008.
That's correct, but any trade would be contingent on D-Rob signing a new contract. NO TEAM IN THE NFL will pay D-Rob what the New York Jets are required to pay him in '08 AND give up their draf picks to do so.
