Hes bashed for his ability. Rarely, if ever, has anyone ever bashed him as a person junc...and you and all the other Pennington lovers know that..yet you keep going with this "how dare you bash Chad". Chad is a great guy...we all agree. My little nephew is one of the nicest kids I have ever met...but because of the that, I dont want him to be the qb of the nyj's. Doesnt make me a bad person now, does it? The Chad lovers have to realize that this is strictly business Frado. Nothing personal.
You've pointed out some real issues that need to be addressed. But addressing them doesn't have as much to do with the QB as it does with the real causes of this situation. The offensive line has not held up well for the pass or the run for the last few years. It is true that in 06, the weak schedule and smart tactics enabled a rehabbing CP to trick us into a few victories. But the minute we got away from the also-rans, and into the playoffs, the glaring weaknesses in the OL and DL killed us. Last year the FO was able to re-load the wallet and this year the FO and CS have been able to go full blast after every FA that could help us, and hopefully every draftee that can help us. I can't fault the idea of drafting another QB to develop at some point in this draft. But we need speed, and we need CBs and we need OLs. Hopefully, we will end up with some outside speed to complement LC and a lockdown CB to complement DR, and some more Big Uglies with attitude. The ability to win starts and ends in the line of scrimmage. This needs to be focused on until we get it right. We will know we have gotten it right when we win some games running the ball. Passing should be a luxury, running should be our meat and potatoes. Until this is the pattern of the NYJ offense all our trickery will be for naught and the skill players will be mashed well.
The League office can write any number of memos about keeping your DB hands off the receiver. However, it doesn't matter if your WRs can all run a 4.1 40 -- if your running game isn't working and alll the DB has to do is let the pass rush force your QB into short dump offs and short outs, there is a lot less ground to cover. Even a rookie like Ross can get two interceptions in game where the DL has taken away all the options -- run, long pass, run fake. Football is still about who wins the line of scrimmage. If your OL can't stand up to the opponent's DL, it doesn't matter who your skill players are or what they try to do. Check out the SB and Mr. Brady's experience. He got the memo, but it didn't do him much good, did it?
Football is about a lot of things being able to get the ball into a tight spot to a second or third reciever when you have time is one of those things. Having a QB who can get the ball there without a required timing pattern is one of them. Having time to throw is nice, having a QB who makes the secondary play more space opens up more space for the WR. Put 22 guys in your Living room and see how much space you have to put the ball in. Now go outside and put the same 22 guys on a football field with a QB who can hit any spot sideline to sideline 50 yards out. Good OL face good DL in the playoffs. When the run is stoped and play action is taken away Chad even with time is a second rate passer.
we lost both guard randy thomas and tackle kareem mckenzie directly because of the fact that we could not afford to keep them. way too much of the salary cap was being tied up by chad's $64 million contract. so, he also did himself no favors by getting so much money that the team could not afford to keep the ol intact and protect him from injuries. but, to some of you, chad can do no wrong.
here we go again, now on paper we have an offensive line and all the Chad lovers think he is gonna fool everyone with playaction passes. NEWSFLASH, CHAD CANT THROW ANYMORE, therefore the supposed vaunted running game we are gonna have will look alot like last year! Chad is great I get it, but can you guys please get real! The team we all watch on sundays is best served by kellen at this point and if not him then we must draft a qb next year but we cant keep going back. Its like a girlfriend you broke up with, every now and then you can get together and its alright, but usually you see right away why it wont work. I dont have another forty years to wait for a championship.
I would hope that the Jets would be upfront and give Chad a chance to catch on with another team before teams break training camp. Whatever you think of the guy he has always put team 1st,something other sports superstars need to do with their own enormous contracts. Look for Chad on KC's sideline if the Jets cut him.
I don't think that the CS would have an open competition in good faith with Chad and Kellen if they didn't believe it was in the best interests of the team. From everything you guys are saying this evening, you don't believe it is. You certainly have a right to your opinion. But it's obvious that the CS doesn't share your opinion of Chad or Kellen or what you think "the right thing" is. Otherwise, we would have a trade right away. Now, if we don't have a trade right away, that indicates to me that we have a serious difference of opinion between some guys on this thread and the CS. I think that is what should be talked about: What is the CS doing wrong, and why. You guys keep knocking Chad and Kellen as if this is the key to the future of the NYJ. If that were the case, the CS would be chiming in.
So who offered the Jets anything for Pennington? His situation is not so different from Drobs, he's damaged goods set to make a LOT of money. He's also incredibly overrated. He's not a bad QB when he has everything that every other QB in the league needs to be successful, but he'll never be a Tom Brady, a Peytone Manning, or anywhere near that caliber of player. Granted not many are, but Pennington isn't even really close. People bag on the guy because they feel like they've seen the best he's got to offer. He's often injured and even when he does play you know what to expect and so does everyone else in the league. He really can't make all the throws. You watch the games so you already know that. Even when the Jets went to the playoffs a couple seasons ago anyone could see that Pennington was making uncharacteristic mistakes. He's not the same player he was pre injury. Whether or not fans see eye to eye with the Jets coaching staff is another matter. They'll make do with the best they've got. Solid QB's, let alone franchise level ones are not easy to come by. Thats why the Jets are in the predicament they're in. They have a young guy who may or may not be the future of the position. They have a damaged vet who, at his best, limits turnovers and allows the team to stay in the game. At his best. You can't fault fans for wanting solid QB play, and having watched the Bills, Pats, and Phins for the past 2 decades you really can't blame them for wanting a little better then solid. Can't expect fans to be content with below average production at one of the most important positions on the team. Deal with it yes, agree or be content, no way. Solid QB play can help your team win a SB, so yes, whoever takes over the position is very important to the future of the NYJ. Many people felt that there should have been an open competition last season and that didn't happen. Now we have one and if we're to take it at face value, it means that we don't even know if Clemens is as good as Chad Pennington. For the people who don't want Pennington as the starter, it's a scary prospect and it means we need to keep searching for a QB. I seriously doubt that Mangini and co are happy to go into TC with a QB competition looming. What coach would want that? A coach who doesn't have a solid, clear cut starter. It's not for the right reasons either. Here's hoping it really is all nothing more then posturing. Chad Pennington would be a great back-up on any NFL team including the Jets. Problem is he's making starters money and he's not guaranteed to start next season. That means it's either time to go or time to restructure.
I agree that this thread should be only about the NYJ winning. But apparently Chad isn't going anywhere -- check out Myers column in the Daily News this am.
I don't think he's done all that much for us. Got us close to the AFC championship once. Of course he's been pretty well compensated ($64 million) given his production.
Jets81 -- QBs play as well as their team lets them. With the number of hits on Chad, do you think Tom Brady would perform as well -- how about those 23 bashes he got in the SB...? If you get hit twenty times a game, you would be banged up and your performance would suffer. I do not think you can underestimate the damage that a non-functioning OL does to the skill players and their performance. When we have a truly dominant OL that overpowers the line of scrimmage -- I am not talking about lollygagging up there treading water. I'm looking for five raging Big Uglies that are snot-knocking breath takers on every play. I will never forget the Raiders' manhandling of the NYJ when run after run they kept slamming the DL in the mouth and banging for another five. We're going to run over you and you're going to take it. Until you guys and the NYJ get used to the idea that that is the most reliable way to win games in the NFL (whether you end up running more or passing more, it all comes from the same winning the line of scrimmage war) -- these ballet dancer arguments are just going to keep frustrating and angering. Everybody likes to see an 80 yard run untouched to the end zone. But not everybody is willing to deal with what it takes to make that happen on a not infrequent basis. If your QB doesn't GET THE CHANCE to get injured because he has all the Tom Brady Time he can handle back there making up his mind, getting his feet set just so, well then he won't be NEARLY as injury prone, will he? You think it is bad luck when a QB gets injured after being hit on nearly every play he drops back on? You think such a QB is injury-prone....? Myers in the Daily News today reports on a few conversations that indicate what the owner and the CS and the FO really think about this competition and Chad and Kellen. Looks like there's going to be a competition, and may the Best QB start.
Chad Pennington is the definition of injury prone. I don't know how there can be any question of that. I've been as big a proponent of fixing the OL as anyone else on the board, I understand what it means to be able to protect the QB and make holes for a RB. It's not about 80 yard bombs down field, it's about a simple throw to the sideline, hitting a receiver in stride, not getting them killed on a jump ball. Can Pennington be more effective with a good OL and some quality weapons? Sure, any QB can. He'll never be an elite QB in my opinion though. Thats why I want the search to continue.
I think you nailed CP with this statement. Even though a timing pattern is fairly common in today's game, with CP it is almost required.
Quote: "...t's not about 80 yard bombs down field, it's about a simple throw to the sideline, hitting a receiver in stride, not getting them killed on a jump ball...." When the Defense takes away time with a pass rush because there is no running game, the QB is limited to short passes. The DBs are instructed to jump the short routes because the QB doesn't have time to throw long passes. The QB does what his Offense allows him to do. If the Defense defeats the Offense the QB's available options are shut down. The remaining options are the DB's choices to jump. You cannot judge a QB's ability when he is let down by his OL. It's not just important, pass blocking -- you can't just pay a little lip service to a nudge on the line and then the QB has all the Tom Brady Time he needs. If you can't run, you can rarely pass in this league. The NYJ have a hard time lately in doing either, and it's all traceable to the OL.
Its not about time that limits Chad, its his arm. His pass lack Zip all of the time. The short thorws are soft. The Mid range throws are soft. His Long throws are soft. Even when he has time to throw, he does not have the arm to put fear into anyone but his own recivers. Its not about being able to heave it up there for 40 yards, but getting it there quickly. Add to that lately he seems to make the wrong reads with alot of his routes getting jumped late in games and its not a pretty sight.
